Yes. An Apple Watch SOS alert helped trigger a search-and-rescue response after three skiers fell in the Stevens Pass backcountry in Washington on January 22, 2025. One skier fell about 1,000 feet and injured a leg; a second fell roughly 500 feet and suffered a twisted knee and broken wrist. Rescuers located and airlifted all three.
What happened near Union Peak?
The three skiers were in the Stevens Pass backcountry near Union Peak when they got into trouble. KIRO reported that Chelan County Sheriff’s Office received an Apple Watch SOS alert describing a fall of about 1,000 feet and a leg injury. The office requested help from King County Air Support. KIRO 7 News
KPTV, citing the King County Sheriff’s Office Air Support Unit, reported that one skier fell roughly 1,000 feet and injured a leg. A second fell about 500 feet, twisting a knee and breaking a wrist; the third was uninjured. After reaching the group in steep terrain after sunset, a helicopter crew hoisted the skiers and airlifted all three to safety. KPTV’s report
Why did the alert matter?
The alert gave authorities an approximate fall distance and injury information, prompting a response from the appropriate sheriff’s office. The skiers were outside ordinary cell-phone range. ABC News quoted King County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jason Stanley saying, “Without some sort of satellite communication device, this story could have a very different ending, a very tragic ending because of the temperatures that the skiers were skiing in and the distance they were away from any kind of civilization.” ABC News

The rescue also depended on human responders and regional capability, not just the alert. King County says its Air Support Unit provides 24/7 helicopter and drone support for wilderness search and rescue and interagency missions. King County Sheriff’s Office Air Support Unit
Did the watch contact rescuers by satellite?
The reports establish that the alert was attributed to an Apple Watch and that the skiers were beyond ordinary cellular coverage. They do not identify the watch model or explain the exact communication configuration used. It would therefore be inaccurate to say that every Apple Watch can independently send satellite SOS, or that this particular watch alone supplied the satellite connection.

Apple’s documented safety features vary by watch model, paired devices, settings, coverage and conditions. Fall Detection is available on Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), Series 4 or later, and Ultra models. If the watch detects a hard fall, it can alert the wearer and, if there is no response during the alert period, call emergency services and message emergency contacts with the wearer’s location. Apple says that, in supported conditions, fall notifications may be communicated through Emergency SOS via satellite outside cellular and Wi‑Fi coverage when there is a clear line of sight to a satellite. Apple announced a separate capability for Apple Watch Ultra 3 on September 9, 2025: built-in two-way satellite communications. Apple says the watch can text emergency services and, if it detects a hard fall while the wearer is unresponsive off-grid, automatically send situation and location information when it has satellite line of sight. What should backcountry skiers take from this?
- Fall Detection is not the same as universal satellite SOS. Check the exact watch, iPhone pairing, settings and supported conditions for the safety feature you intend to rely on.
- Off-grid communication needs a plan. For trips beyond cellular coverage, consider how you will contact emergency services and share your location if your watch or phone cannot connect.
- A dedicated satellite communicator remains worth considering. The reports describe one rescue, not a controlled comparison of watches and communicators. For a device decision, assess automatic fall detection, phone-free emergency contact, two-way messaging, satellite coverage and line of sight, location sharing, cold-weather battery life, weight, glove usability, subscription costs and regional emergency-service integration.
- Do not treat one rescue as a guarantee. This incident shows how an alert can help initiate a response; it does not establish a general rescue success rate or replace trip preparation and appropriate equipment.
Which Apple Watch has Fall Detection?
Apple documents Fall Detection on Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), Series 4 or later, and Ultra models. That list answers which models support the feature; it does not mean all listed watches have identical off-grid communications. Before choosing one for backcountry use, verify the current requirements for the specific model, paired iPhone, satellite availability, region and settings.
