Ken Griffin, the Citadel founder who arranged for a satellite dish to bring stock quotes to his Harvard dorm room, has announced a $3 billion gift to Carnegie Mellon University. CMU plans to put $2 billion toward a new campus in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood and $1 billion toward Pittsburgh. The Miami campus is planned around four broad societal challenges, including biological discovery and advanced manufacturing—not as a robotics factory or a finished project.
How CMU plans to divide the $3 billion
Carnegie Mellon announced the gift on September 30, 2026. Under the university’s allocation, $2 billion is for the proposed Miami campus and $1 billion is for Pittsburgh. CMU says the Pittsburgh portion is split evenly: $500 million for the School of Computer Science and $500 million for university priorities. The university says its computer science school will be renamed the Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science. CMU describes the total gift as the largest individual philanthropic investment in higher education; that is the university’s characterization.

What the proposed Miami campus is meant to study
CMU says the Wynwood campus will organize education and research around societal challenges rather than conventional academic majors. The university identifies four initial challenge areas:

The model is intended to bring together expertise from across the university. CMU points to strengths including advanced computing, artificial intelligence, robotics, machine learning and autonomy. Those are areas of institutional expertise, not confirmation of specific Miami laboratories, degree programs or research outcomes. The university’s CMU Miami site describes its vision for the campus.
What is known about the site, scale and timeline
CMU describes a planned 35-acre site in Wynwood. Its current projections for a completed campus are more than 3,500 undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students, nearly 300 faculty members and more than 600 staff. These are anticipated figures, not current enrollment or staffing.

The university’s present schedule calls for construction to begin in 2027, graduate enrollment to start in 2028 and the first undergraduate cohort to arrive in 2032. CMU says the enrollment milestones depend on necessary regulatory approvals. These dates are plans; the announcement does not establish that approvals have been granted, construction has started or students have enrolled. It also does not settle the final design, curriculum or specific academic offerings.

Yes, with an important qualification: the accounts describe an installation made with permission, not a computer hack or an unauthorized dish. In a PBS interview, Griffin said that “the supervisor of the building gave me permission to put a satellite dish on top of the building so that I could have real-time stock quotes.”

The Harvard Crimson reported in a 2014 profile that Griffin was trading bonds from his Cabot House dorm room as a sophomore in 1987. According to the profile, he persuaded Cabot maintenance staff to install a dish on the roof and run a cable down to his room. It also reported that he raised $265,000 from family and friends for his investment scheme. That figure describes the historical venture, not the 2026 gift. The Crimson profile supplies the dorm-room details; Griffin’s PBS interview confirms the dish and the supervisor’s permission.
