The Kneijnsberg Hugenius is an automatic watch by independent watchmaker Brendan Horneman, designed as a tribute to Christiaan Huygens. What is the Kneijnsberg Hugenius?
The Hugenius is a named model made under the Kneijnsberg name. Monochrome Watches’ launch feature, published by Robin Nooy on 24 June 2025, describes a titanium-cased automatic watch with conventional central hour and minute hands, plus an unusual pointer for the day indication. A date window sits at six o’clock.
The design takes its name and inspiration from Christiaan Huygens (1629–1695), the Dutch natural scientist whose work spanned mathematics, physics, mechanics and astronomy. The Christiaan Huygens Prize Foundation also highlights his work on pendulum clocks and lens grinding. How the design refers to Huygens
A day display built around astronomy
Rather than showing the day through a conventional window or disc, the Hugenius uses a central hand with a 4 mm magnifying lens. The pointer moves across seven weekday symbols drawn from mythology and astronomy, enlarging the symbol at the indicated day. The launch feature says the pointer jumps at midnight. This makes the day display the watch’s clearest visual link to the celestial themes associated with Huygens.

Horology, with historical nuance
Huygens is closely associated with the pendulum clock, and his work helped advance mechanical timekeeping. The Monochrome Watches feature says his balance-spring invention was introduced in 1675 and improved the accuracy of clocks and pocket watches. It also notes that British watchmaker Robert Hooke was independently working on a similar concept, and that the dispute over priority continues. The historical connection should therefore be understood as part of a wider development in timekeeping, not as an uncontested claim that Huygens alone originated the balance spring.

How the movement powers the display
The 28.350 is described as a modified ETA 2834-2. The reported modification replaces the base movement’s disc-style day display with the Hugenius’s hand-and-lens arrangement. The pointer’s reported midnight jump advances it to the next day symbol. The 28,800 vph frequency and 42-hour reserve are published product specifications; no independent accuracy or durability results are established in the launch feature.

Case finishes and strap options
The June 2025 feature describes a bare titanium version, an option with a gold-anodized bezel, and a fully gold-anodized version. It also describes canvas and leather strap options. The reported 48.5 mm lug-to-lug measurement is useful when considering fit, particularly for wearers who find that dimension more informative than case diameter alone.

Monochrome Watches reported a planned edition of 350 pieces and a launch price of EUR 1,150 excluding VAT. The feature said a Kickstarter campaign would be followed by direct sales. These are launch-era details from June 2025: current stock, current pricing, whether the edition remains available, and the present sales route have not been verified. Check Kneijnsberg’s current sales information before treating the watch as available at that price.
