Its appeal is a clean, legible dial and vintage-inspired styling; whether the faux-aged lume makes it a future classic is a matter of taste, not something a review can settle. This is the Heritage Skin Diver—not the two-crown Longines Legend Diver.
What the Heritage Skin Diver is
Fratello’s April 16, 2019 hands-on review identifies the watch as reference L2.822.4.56.9. It is a modern Heritage model drawing on Longines’ skin-diving designs, with a straightforward layout: one crown, a rotating bezel outside the case, and no date. The combination makes it visually simpler than the Legend Diver, whose bezel is operated from a second crown and sits inside the case.
The reviewed reference’s reported specifications are below. These are figures from Fratello’s 2019 specification list, not independent measurements made for this article.

How it wears and reads
Reviewer Balazs Ferenczi described the dial as “huge, clean and easy to read.” He also reported that the watch wore well on his wrist and did not feel top-heavy to him. Those are his impressions rather than a promise about fit: a 42 mm case can occupy substantial space, and wrist shape, strap choice and personal preference all affect how it feels.

The dial’s faux-aged lume is the most conspicuous vintage styling cue. Some buyers will like the warmer, aged look; others may prefer lume that appears less deliberately patinated. Ferenczi also noted that the black rubber strap picked up lint. He mentions brown leather and a Milanese-style bracelet as alternatives, but the leather strap is not appropriate for underwater use. The review does not establish fit for unrelated aftermarket straps, so check compatibility for the exact reference before buying one.
Skin Diver versus Legend Diver
The names are easy to mix up, but these are distinct designs. Longines’ current Legend Diver collection page describes its characteristic two crowns and internal rotating bezel; the brand says placing the bezel inside the case protects it from accidental manipulation and shocks that could alter its setting. The Heritage Skin Diver reviewed by Fratello instead has one crown and an external bezel.

The Legend Diver comparison is useful for understanding the bezel distinction, not for transferring specifications: the cited L3.774.4.60.2 is a different watch. Longines also announced a 39 mm Legend Diver inspired by the original 1959 model in November 2023; that announcement is context for the Legend Diver line, not evidence that the Heritage Skin Diver reference remains in production.
What is known about the historical inspiration
The origin story is not consistent across the available accounts. Longines’ August 2024 press release says it introduced the Nautilus Skin Diver in 1958, rated to 12 bar (120 m), with a steel-bracelet fine-adjustment system intended to allow wearing it over a diving suit. The same release says the Legend Diver followed in 1959, also initially rated to 12 bar (120 m).

Fratello’s 2019 review gives a different account of the original Skin Diver, dating it to 1959 and stating a 150 m rating. These accounts should be kept separate; the available sources do not resolve the discrepancy. Neither historical rating should be confused with the 300 m / 30 bar figure Fratello reports for the modern Heritage Skin Diver reviewed here.
What the water-resistance rating does—and does not—establish
Fratello reports 300 m / 30 bar for this reference. That is the published specification in the review, not evidence that this article independently tested the watch or that the watch holds a particular certification. Longines’ August 2024 release summarizes ISO 6425 divers’ watch criteria, including a minimum 10 bar / 100 m water resistance as well as requirements covering matters such as shock, magnetic fields, condensation, corrosion, temperature, a secure dive-time indicator and readability in darkness. The cited material does not establish ISO certification for L2.822.4.56.9.

A water-resistance figure alone is not a substitute for checking a watch’s condition and service history, particularly on a pre-owned example. The 2019 review’s stated rating should not be treated as a guarantee of present-day water resistance for an individual watch.

Fratello listed a price of €2,460 when it published its review in April 2019. That is a historical price, not a current quote. The sources cited here do not establish today’s price, whether the exact L2.822.4.56.9 is still sold new, or its current stock status. Confirm the reference and the seller’s current listing before making a purchase decision.

Is it a future classic?
The case for lasting appeal is its restrained, no-date dial, recognizable dive-watch layout and the contrast between its vintage cues and the modern specifications reported in the review. The external bezel and single crown also give it a different character from the Legend Diver, rather than making it a substitute for that model.
The main reservations are equally specific: 42 mm will not suit every wrist, faux-aged lume is divisive, and a 2019 review cannot establish how the reference will be regarded—or priced—in the future. It is best considered a distinctive Heritage dive watch whose appeal depends on whether its size and vintage styling work for you, rather than bought on an assumed future-collectible premium.
