The 2023 Longines Legend Diver is a 39 mm redesign of a model introduced in 1959, retaining its two-crown layout and internal rotating bezel while adding a modern automatic movement, COSC chronometer certification and ISO 6425 diver’s-watch certification. This is a specification-led overview, not a wrist test: the published sources establish the watch’s features, but not how it fits or feels in use.
What changed with the 2023 Legend Diver?
Announced by Longines on 16 November 2023, the release brought the Legend Diver into a redesigned 39 mm case, offered at launch with black or blue dials. Longines described it as faithful to the 1959 original. Its most recognizable features remain two crowns and an internal rotating bezel. Longines’s November 2023 press release calls the watch “immediately recognisable by its two crowns and internal rotating bezel.”
The official black-dial example covered here is reference L3.764.4.50.0, listed by Longines with a black lacquer dial and leather strap. Longines’s current collection includes later color and strap variations, so those should not be treated as part of the original 2023 launch. The official US product page identifies the exact black reference.
How the internal bezel works
The Legend Diver uses a bidirectional 60-minute dive-time scale positioned beneath the crystal, rather than a rotating external bezel. The screw-down crown at 2 o’clock operates it. Longines says the internal position helps protect the bezel from handling and accidental shocks that could move its setting. The second crown completes the model’s characteristic two-crown arrangement. These are functional design details; the published specifications do not establish how easily a particular wearer can operate the crowns.

Movement, reserve and certifications
Longines specifies its automatic L888.6 calibre, fitted with a silicon balance-spring and offering up to 72 hours of power reserve. The listed dial has no date. The brand states that the watch is COSC chronometer-certified and certified as a divers’ watch under ISO 6425, with water resistance up to 30 bar / 300 metres. These are manufacturer-published specifications and certifications, not independent timing or water-resistance test results for an individual watch.
Longines describes the COSC certification process as testing the watch head, with the movement running in the case, for 15 consecutive days, in different positions and at three temperature levels. That explains the stated certification process; it is not a daily-rate result for reference L3.764.4.50.0 measured independently.

Case, dial and configurations
Longines describes a stainless-steel case with polished and satin-brushed surfaces, a screw-down back stamped with a diver, and a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coatings on both sides. The dial markings and hands are luminous. The 2023 press materials name brown leather, blue NATO and stainless-steel bracelet configurations, with a double-safety folding clasp for the bracelet.
Configuration matters when identifying a particular listing: the launch materials describe several options, while the current US black-dial reference page specifies a leather strap. The available specifications do not state a lug width or establish compatibility with third-party straps or bracelet end links.

How the 2023 watch relates to the 1959 original
The Legend Diver’s lineage begins with reference 7042, but the original and the 2023 model are distinct watches. Longines and Swatch Group publish the following milestones and historical specifications. Swatch Group’s 2023 archive and the Longines launch release provide the history.

The 1959 model’s 12 bar / 120 m rating and Super-Compressor construction belong to reference 7042, not the modern 39 mm watch. Conversely, the 2023 movement and ratings should not be projected onto earlier generations.

What a specification-led overview cannot tell you
Case diameter, case construction and stated features are documented, but they do not establish how the 39 mm case sits on a particular wrist, whether the crowns are comfortable to use, how the bracelet feels, or how legible the dial is in real conditions. The cited materials also provide no independent timing measurements for the exact black reference. Those judgments require direct examination or testing; they cannot be inferred reliably from the specification sheet.
Current official price by market
On 4 October 2026, Longines’s US product page displayed $3,500 for black reference L3.764.4.50.0 with a leather strap. On the same date, its Swiss collection page displayed CHF 2,900 for a 39 mm Legend Diver listing. These are regional page prices checked on that date, not 2023 launch prices, and they are not a like-for-like international comparison: currency, market, tax treatment and configuration differ.
