M5StickC Watch NeckTimer: How the DIY Meeting Timer Works

The M5StickC Watch NeckTimer is a 2019 DIY wearable meeting reminder using NTP time, the BM8563 RTC and a relay-driven warning light. Here is how it works and what to verify before building.

M5StickC Watch “NeckTimer” is a 2019 Hackster.io prototype that turns an original M5StickC ESP32 wearable board into a visual meeting-time reminder. It synchronizes the clock over Wi‑Fi, shows the date and time on its small display, and flashes an external light as a configured end time approaches. It is a maker project—not a finished commercial watch or a validated meeting-management product.

What the NeckTimer is designed to do

The project addresses a simple meeting problem: making a time limit visible without someone interrupting the discussion verbally. The M5StickC is worn like a small watch while a connected lamp or LED provides a more noticeable warning. The Hackster.io project was published on 29 September 2019 by aNo研: M5StickC Watch “NeckTimer”.

The source describes a prototype. It does not establish accuracy testing, battery endurance, relay-load certification, or suitability for controlling mains lighting.

How the timer operates

1. Network time and the RTC

At startup, the firmware uses the NTP server ntp.nict.jp with a nine-hour UTC offset to obtain local time. It writes that time to the M5StickC’s BM8563 real-time clock (RTC), then reads the RTC for the on-screen date and time. M5Stack documents the RTC and related system functions in its StickC System Functions documentation.

2. Configured target time

The example code sets a target of 17:00. That is a demonstration setting in the source, not a recommended meeting schedule or a performance measurement.

3. A 30-second warning window

The firmware treats the first 30 seconds of the target minute as the warning period. The external output flashes during that window, with the interval becoming shorter after seconds 15, 20 and 25. In practical terms, the warning becomes progressively more urgent as the configured time arrives.

4. External light switching

The project description says a relay switches the lights. Its parts list names a Seeed Studio Grove Relay and a generic LED. The page does not state the exact relay model, contact rating, LED electrical specification, isolation arrangement, or a complete lamp circuit. Do not infer safe mains-wiring instructions from this project; use a properly rated, enclosed switching solution and follow local electrical requirements.

Original M5StickC versus newer watch hardware

Model identity matters more than the word “watch.” The NeckTimer source targets the original M5StickC, while the later StickC-Plus Watch Kit uses a different board variant and accessories. M5Stack’s documentation lists the Plus kit’s strap as 230 × 22 × 6 mm and 12.3 g, and the Plus board as 48.0 × 24.0 × 13.5 mm. Those figures apply to the Plus kit, not the original M5StickC, and do not prove better timer performance.

Sourcing question Original M5StickC StickC-Plus Watch Kit or another variant
Project compatibility Closest match to the 2019 source May require code, pin-mapping and fit changes; not interchangeable by assumption
Availability M5Stack’s official store marks it EOL Availability and current support depend on the specific model
Wearable fit Uses the original watch base/belt arrangement Uses its own documented strap and board dimensions
Output hardware Still requires a correctly rated relay/output circuit Still requires verification for the chosen board’s pins and electrical limits

Check the listing and board markings before buying. A Plus or Plus2 substitution can change dimensions, connectors, pin assignments or library behavior.

What you need to verify before building

  • Confirm that the board is the original M5StickC expected by the source, especially because M5Stack lists that model as EOL in its official store.
  • Identify the exact Grove Relay model and read its contact, coil, voltage and isolation specifications.
  • Choose an LED and resistor appropriate to the output circuit; the project does not provide those values.
  • Determine the board pin used by the source code and confirm it on your exact hardware revision.
  • Decide whether the warning should be a low-voltage LED only. Any mains-powered lamp needs appropriate enclosure, protection and qualified installation.
  • Provide Wi‑Fi access for NTP synchronization and decide how the device should behave when the network is unavailable.

Strengths and limitations

Why the concept is useful

  • A glance at the wrist can show the current time without opening a phone.
  • A shared light can communicate urgency to everyone in a room.
  • The target time and warning window are firmware settings, so the concept can be adapted to another schedule.
  • The RTC allows time display after synchronization rather than requiring a continuous NTP request for every screen update.

Where the source leaves gaps

  • No independent test establishes timing accuracy, Wi‑Fi recovery behavior or battery runtime.
  • The project does not document a complete relay-to-lamp wiring diagram or load rating.
  • The warning logic is narrowly demonstrated around one target minute and may need redesign for recurring meetings, multiple alerts or a countdown display.
  • Original-board availability is now a sourcing risk because the model is marked EOL.

A sensible adaptation path

  1. Start with the original hardware and run the display/RTC example from the M5StickC Arduino Library.
  2. Verify that Wi‑Fi and ntp.nict.jp produce the intended local time, including the +9-hour offset used by the source.
  3. Set a test target a few minutes ahead rather than wiring a lamp first, and observe the 30-second flashing behavior.
  4. Connect only a low-voltage indicator until the output pin and timing logic are confirmed.
  5. If a relay is needed, use the exact relay’s datasheet and an enclosed, appropriately rated load circuit; do not copy undocumented mains wiring.
  6. Only then fit the board to a compatible watch base or belt and test visibility, battery charging and network-loss behavior.

Bottom line for watch buyers and makers

NeckTimer is best understood as a wearable ESP32 demonstration: the original M5StickC keeps time, the display shows it, and a relay-driven light makes the final seconds conspicuous. Its appeal is the unobtrusive meeting cue, not smartwatch functionality. Because the source omits electrical and reliability details and the original board is EOL, treat it as a starting point for a low-voltage prototype and verify every hardware and safety detail before adapting it.
