Yes—the Fēnix 8 is included in Garmin’s September 22, 2026 feature release. The update adds new running plans alongside fall detection and hands-free voice control, while the watch’s recent feature history also includes Running Tolerance, adaptive Garmin Triathlon Coach plans and track-run daily suggested workouts.
It does not establish that every Fēnix 8 variant now has every Forerunner 970 metric, that a new heart-rate strap is required, or that race times or injury rates will improve. Availability depends on the exact model, region and software channel.

What Garmin added in the September 22, 2026 release
Garmin’s latest announced software release covers selected smartwatches, including the Fēnix 8 series. Its headline additions are:
- New running plans
- Fall detection
- Hands-free voice control
Garmin says owners can update by enabling automatic updates on the device and syncing with Garmin Connect, or by using Garmin Express. The September release sits on top of earlier Fēnix 8 feature drops rather than replacing them.

The running features Fēnix 8 owners can use
Running Tolerance
Garmin defines Running Tolerance as an estimate of how each run affects your body, paired with a recommended weekly maximum mileage. It is intended to help you judge whether another run fits your recent load instead of treating every workout as an isolated session.
The recommendation is a training aid, not a medical limit or an injury prediction. Terrain, heat, sleep, illness, strength training and pain can all make a nominally acceptable mileage target inappropriate.
Garmin Triathlon Coach
Garmin’s adaptive Triathlon Coach plans are free plans in Garmin Connect that adjust daily and send workouts to compatible devices. Garmin says the adjustments use performance, recovery and health metrics. That makes the plan more responsive than a fixed calendar, but it remains automated coaching rather than a replacement for a coach who can assess technique, symptoms or race strategy.
Rank #2
- Advanced multisport GPS smartwatch for athletes/adventurers features a 1.4” solar charged display with scratch-resistant sapphire lens, durable titanium bezel and built-in LED flashlight for after-dark visibility

- Power up your body’s performance, endurance and resistance to injury with targeted strength training plans, real-time stamina tracking, sport-specific workouts and a full range of built-in sports apps
- Your training readiness score is based on sleep quality, recovery, training load and HRV status to determine if you’re primed to go hard and reap the rewards (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- For your active lifestyle, a built-in speaker and mic let you make and take phone calls from your wrist when your watch is paired to your smartphone — and you can even use your smartphone’s voice assistant to respond to text messages and more
Track-run daily suggested workouts
Supported Fēnix 8 configurations can receive daily suggested workouts for track running. These suggestions complement Garmin’s broader daily workout system, which can adapt after each run or ride.

What the Fēnix 8 already measured before these additions
The Fēnix 8 baseline is already broad. Garmin lists:
Rank #3
- Advanced multisport GPS smartwatch for athletes/adventurers features a bright 1.3” AMOLED display, stainless steel bezel, enhanced graphical interface and a built-in LED flashlight for after- dark visibility
- Power up your body’s performance, endurance and resistance to injury with targeted strength training plans, real-time stamina tracking, sport-specific workouts and a full range of built-in sports apps
- Battery performance: up to 10 days in smartwatch mode; up to 28 hours in GPS mode
- Your training readiness score is based on sleep quality, recovery, training load and HRV status to determine if you’re primed to go hard and reap the rewards (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)

- Training Readiness
- Endurance Score
- Hill Score
- VO2 max
- Training Status
- PacePro for pacing a course or distance
- Grade-adjusted pace
- ClimbPro climb information
- Personalized daily suggested workouts
That distinction matters: Running Tolerance and adaptive plans extend the watch’s load and coaching layer; they are not evidence that the underlying VO2 max, endurance or hill-score algorithms were replaced.
Does this give the Fēnix 8 every Forerunner 970 running metric?
No one-to-one parity claim is established by Garmin’s cited releases. They specifically identify Running Tolerance, Triathlon Coach plans and track-run suggestions on supported watches including Fēnix 8, while the Fēnix 8 already has the performance metrics listed above. Garmin does not say that the update transfers every Forerunner 970 feature or that all metrics share identical hardware requirements.
For a purchase or upgrade decision, compare the exact Fēnix 8 variant and current software page with the Forerunner 970 feature list. “Supported watches” is not the same as universal availability across sizes, editions, regions or rollout channels.
Rank #4
- Advanced multisport GPS smartwatch for athletes/adventurers features a bright 1.4” AMOLED display with scratch-resistant sapphire lens, durable titanium bezel and a built-in LED flashlight for after- dark visibility - weight is 80g
- Power up your body’s performance, endurance and resistance to injury with targeted strength training plans, real-time stamina tracking, sport-specific workouts and a full range of built-in sports apps
- Battery performance: up to 16 days in smartwatch mode; up to 47 hours in GPS mode
- Your training readiness score is based on sleep quality, recovery, training load and HRV status to determine if you’re primed to go hard and reap the rewards (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)

Is Running Tolerance useful?
It is most useful as a guardrail for runners who increase mileage quickly, alternate hard and easy days, or struggle to interpret several training metrics at once. A weekly maximum-mileage recommendation gives a simple planning constraint, while the per-run impact estimate provides context for why a short, hilly workout may not be equivalent to an easy flat run of the same distance.
Use it alongside perceived effort, recovery signals and your actual symptoms. Do not continue running through pain simply because the watch shows remaining tolerance, and do not assume a low tolerance score diagnoses overtraining or predicts an injury.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need a new heart-rate strap?
The cited Garmin announcements do not say that a new strap is required for Running Tolerance, Triathlon Coach, track-run suggestions or the September running plans. There is therefore no general Fēnix 8 upgrade requirement to buy a heart-rate monitor.

Some advanced running measurements can depend on a compatible external sensor, and Garmin’s HRM-600 may be relevant in particular setups. The releases do not establish HRM-600 compatibility or necessity for every Fēnix 8 model, so verify the exact metric, watch variant and sensor support before purchasing one.
How to install the update
- On the Fēnix 8, enable automatic updates in the device’s system or software-update settings.
- Sync the watch with Garmin Connect. If an update has reached your device, the download and installation can proceed through that connection.
- Alternatively, connect the watch to a computer and use Garmin Express to check for and install available software.
- After syncing, open the watch’s software-information page and confirm the installed version and enabled features. Garmin’s support history lists a July 2026 version 22.41 entry.
- If a feature is missing, check the exact Fēnix 8 model, region and software channel before troubleshooting further; Garmin’s rollout timing and feature availability can differ across those factors.
What the update proves—and what it does not
Garmin presents these releases as tools to help customers get more from the device and training. The published announcements do not include a controlled statistic showing faster race times, higher VO2 max or lower injury rates after installing the software. Treat the new metrics and plans as decision support, not a guaranteed performance outcome.
For most Fēnix 8 runners, the practical gain is greater context: Running Tolerance adds a weekly-load ceiling, adaptive plans turn recent performance and recovery data into changing workouts, and the existing performance dashboard remains available in the same watch.
