On April 23, 2025, Meta expanded three different Ray-Ban Meta rollouts: Live Translation moved beyond limited access in the markets where the glasses were sold, Live AI expanded to the United States and Canada, and Meta AI reached more supported European Union countries. It was primarily a software and regional-availability update—not a new display-equipped headset or a major hardware refresh.
The practical catch remains important in 2026: buying the glasses does not guarantee every AI feature. Country, language, account, phone, app, firmware and rollout status determine what you can use.
What Meta announced on April 23, 2025
Meta grouped several updates under one announcement, but they did not have the same geography or function.

How Live Translation works
Starting a translation session
The launch voice command was Hey Meta, start live translation.
The glasses listen to the conversation and speak the translation in the wearer’s preferred language. The paired phone can show a translated transcript, which is useful when audio is hard to hear or when you need to review a name or phrase.
Languages at the 2025 launch
Meta reported English, French, Italian and Spanish for that rollout. That four-language figure belongs to the April 2025 announcement. Ray-Ban’s current feature page now describes Live Translation as supporting “6 languages and counting,” but still warns that features depend on country and language: Ray-Ban’s current feature overview.
What “offline” means
The 2025 coverage said downloadable language packs could let translation continue without Wi-Fi or mobile data from the paired phone. This does not make the glasses an independent offline computer: setup, updates, pairing and many other AI functions still rely on the phone, app and internet.

Useful travel behavior—and its limits
Live Translation is best understood as conversational speech assistance, not a guarantee of perfect simultaneous interpretation. Accents, slang, overlapping speakers, wind, traffic and restaurant noise can reduce accuracy. Speak one person at a time in short sentences and independently confirm names, numbers, addresses, medication instructions and legal details.
Live AI is a different feature
Standard Meta AI
Ordinary Meta AI handles an individual request, normally after the wearer says the wake phrase and asks a question.
Live AI
Live AI starts a continuing conversation about the surroundings captured by the glasses’ camera. The reported command was Hey Meta, start live AI.
You can ask follow-up questions, interrupt and continue without repeating the wake phrase each time. Examples include asking about ingredients, identifying an object, or requesting a food-and-wine pairing based on what is nearby.

Live AI does not create a heads-up display. The original Ray-Ban Meta glasses are camera-and-audio wearables: answers are spoken through their speakers, with the phone providing the additional visual interface when applicable.
Where each rollout applied
“More people” did not mean worldwide access to one identical service.
- Live Translation: expanded across the then-supported Ray-Ban Meta product markets, subject to country, language, account and software eligibility.
- Live AI: the launch expansion was for users in the United States and Canada.
- Meta AI: expanded to supported EU countries.
- Visual search: scheduled for supported EU countries shortly after the announcement.
Ray-Ban’s current FAQ lists purchase markets including the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Austria, Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Australia, while noting regional exclusions and feature-specific differences: Ray-Ban Meta FAQ. A country where the glasses can be bought is not automatically a country where every Meta AI feature works.

Other features in the same update
These additions were secondary to translation and AI. Instagram messaging expanded to direct messages, photo sending, audio calls and video calls. Music support broadened to Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Music and Shazam outside North America; voice requests could identify a song or provide information such as an album’s release date. Existing WhatsApp, Messenger and phone-messaging integrations remained part of the platform.
What you need to use the glasses
- Use compatible Ray-Ban Meta hardware and a compatible Android or iOS phone.
- Install the Meta AI mobile app, sign in with a Meta account and pair the glasses.
- Give the glasses and app their current firmware and software updates.
- Confirm that your country, account language and desired feature are supported.
- For travel, download any available translation language resources before leaving reliable connectivity.
- Start the session with the supported voice command, then use the phone for transcripts or settings.
Ray-Ban’s current disclosures also require wireless internet for setup and supported online functions and state a minimum user age of 13. Menu names can differ between the original Ray-Ban Meta generation and newer Gen 2 software, so do not assume a current app path exactly matches the 2025 launch interface.

Feature and language restrictions
The April 2025 translation rollout began with four languages. Current pages advertise broader support, but availability remains country- and language-dependent. Firmware, app configuration, account eligibility and staged rollouts can leave two owners with different features.

Connectivity and battery
Downloaded translation resources can reduce dependence on live phone data for that function. Pairing, updates and many AI requests still need the phone and network. Camera use, AI, calls and music consume more battery than passive sunglasses use; intensive use should not be treated as guaranteed all-day operation.
Noise and recognition errors
Microphones can struggle in crowds, traffic, restaurants and wind. Camera-based AI can misread products, ingredients, plants, animals, signs or text obscured by glare, distance or poor lighting. Do not use it to diagnose illness, identify a dangerous substance, navigate a hazardous area or make a safety-critical decision.
Privacy and recording etiquette
The glasses contain cameras and microphones. Recording laws differ by jurisdiction, and a visible recording indicator does not settle every social or legal concern. Obtain consent where appropriate and check rules at workplaces, schools, hospitals, courts and private venues that may restrict camera-enabled wearables.
If translation will not start
- Check Bluetooth, phone internet access and the connection shown in the Meta AI app.
- Install pending app and glasses updates.
- Verify country, account language and selected-language eligibility.
- Download the required language resources before travel.
- Recharge and restart the glasses and app.
- Use a phone-based translation app as a fallback.
If the translation is wrong
Move away from noise, speak clearly and separately, and verify critical details independently. Treat the result as assistance, not authoritative interpretation.
2026 buying context: Gen 1, Gen 2 or something else?
The 2025 announcement should not be confused with the current product line. Ray-Ban now presents Gen 1 and Gen 2 products; Gen 2 models use a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera and can record video up to 3K at 30 fps. Ray-Ban lists Gen 2 battery life of up to eight hours under specified conditions, with actual results varying by use. Live AI is listed for the United States and Canada, while Live Translation remains subject to country and language restrictions. Choose the glasses if you want hands-free photos, calls, music and spoken AI, and your country supports the features you need. Do not buy primarily for a universal multilingual interpreter, a self-contained cellular device, emergency or medical interpretation, or heads-up subtitles on the original models.
