Rokid’s Smartglasses Are Surprisingly Capable—But the Display Model Is the One to Watch

Rokid Glasses make live subtitles, visual AI and teleprompter text possible in ordinary-looking eyewear, but phone dependence, AI errors and unreliable navigation limit the experience.

Rokid’s glasses are more than camera-and-audio wearables. The $699 Rokid Glasses put a binocular Micro-LED display, camera, open-ear speakers and multimodal AI into a conventional-looking 49-gram frame. That makes live captions, translated subtitles, prompts and visual answers genuinely useful in moments where taking out a phone is inconvenient.

They are not a phone replacement, a dependable navigation system or a professional camera. App, phone, cloud and sometimes subscription dependencies remain central, while translation, recognition and directions can fail. The cheaper Rokid AI Glasses Style removes the display and is a different product, aimed at camera, calls, audio and voice AI.

Which Rokid glasses are we talking about?

The headline “Rokid’s smartglasses are surprisingly capable” applies most directly to the display-equipped Rokid Glasses, the model covered in Engadget’s September 23, 2025 hands-on report (Engadget review).

Model Listed price Weight Display Best for
Rokid Glasses $699 listed price; the product page also showed a $799 reference price and a promotion 49 g Dual-eye monochrome Micro-LED In-view subtitles, captions, prompts, teleprompter text and advertised AR navigation
Rokid AI Glasses Style $349 on its product page; another Rokid landing page showed a $299 promotion 38.5 g, excluding lenses None Camera, calls, music, translation audio and voice AI

Prices are time-sensitive listings, not guaranteed long-term MSRPs. Style is lighter and offers broader lens options, but it cannot show subtitles, navigation prompts or a teleprompter in your field of view.

  • The adjustment dial on the top of the glasses makes it easy to fine-tune the amount of myopia up to 600 diopters; astigmatism and presbyopia are not supported at this time. Users with myopia greater than 600 diopters will need to purchase prescription lenses separately.

Instead, they are powered directly via USB-C from a compatible with e.g., mobile, iphone 15 series iOS and future Type C models most Android phones, Windows laptops, Ipad since 2020, Mac,for specific brands and models of compatible devices, please refer to the Flagship Store.

The display is Rokid’s defining advantage

Rokid Glasses use a dual-eye Micro-LED display rated up to 1,500 nits with an approximately 30-degree field of view (Rokid specifications). This is a glanceable heads-up display, not a full-screen augmented-reality replacement for a phone or television.

That distinction matters. Audio-only glasses can read an answer or translation aloud; Rokid can put a subtitle, short instruction, caption or script where you can glance at it while keeping your hands free. The limited viewing area also means you may need to move your head to see information, and dense interfaces would be tiring.

What the glasses can actually do

Visual questions and AI assistance

The 12MP camera and multimodal assistant can identify objects and answer questions about what you are seeing. This is useful for quick context—such as interpreting a sign or asking about an item—without reaching for a phone. It remains fallible: camera framing, speech pickup, network access and model interpretation all affect the answer. Treat it as an assistant, not a safety, medical, accessibility or authoritative identification system.

Translation

Rokid advertises live translated subtitles, two-way translation through the app, 89 online languages and six offline languages, with latency under one second in supported scenarios (Rokid product page). Those are separate claims, not a promise of universal real-time fluency. Online and offline language availability can differ by mode, and the phone or internet may still be needed.

Engadget found translation useful but imperfect, including phrases that were not converted fluently (Engadget). Accents, idioms, overlapping speakers, background noise, proper names and long conversations are difficult cases. Use subtitles as assistance, not as an official interpretation.

Captions, transcription and summaries

The glasses support audio transcription, intelligent captions, voice memos, meeting summaries and advertised speaker identification (Rokid feature page). Results depend on microphone placement, noise, language and speaker overlap. A generated summary is not a verbatim or legally reliable meeting record, and recording other people may require their consent.

Navigation

Rokid advertises hands-free Google Maps directions, but Engadget reported that turn-by-turn directions did not work during testing (Engadget). Navigation therefore belongs in the “promising but unreliable” category. It requires the app, location permissions, a working phone connection and mapping/network services, and Rokid says full AR-navigation access requires a subscription (Rokid product page). Never rely on it while driving, cycling in traffic or entering a hazardous area.

Photos and video

The display model uses a 12MP Sony IMX681 camera, fixed focus, a listed 3,024 × 4,032 still resolution and approximately 109-degree diagonal field of view. Rokid advertises video options up to 3K (specifications). The camera is suited to spontaneous first-person clips, not phone-equivalent photography: there is no autofocus, the camera’s framing is not identical to your exact gaze, and low light, motion and audio remain practical limitations. Retrieval and sharing still run through the companion software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Teleprompter

A teleprompter mode lets you upload a script and scroll it as you speak. It can help with presentations, speeches and short-form video, provided you prepare the script and set a comfortable speed. Reading too obviously can make eye contact look unnatural, and text remains confined to the display’s viewing zone.

Calls, music and voice controls

Directional open-ear speakers handle calls, music, video audio and spoken AI responses, while four microphones support voice input. Engadget found the speakers usable but limited in loudness and bass (Engadget). Open-ear audio preserves environmental awareness but does not provide headphone-level isolation, bass or privacy; people nearby may still hear sound in a quiet room.

Hardware, battery and everyday friction

Component Rokid Glasses detail
Processor and memory Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 plus RT600 MIMXRT685SFAWBR; 2GB RAM and 32GB storage
Connectivity Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3
Battery 210mAh; Rokid’s FAQ estimates approximately 8–10 hours of daily use, depending on settings and workload
Prescription support Official magnetic prescription insert; Rokid says it supports myopia and astigmatism users
App Required for pairing, media, settings, AI, translation, subtitles, teleprompter and controls

The 8–10-hour figure is a mixed-use estimate, not a promise of continuous recording or translation. Display brightness, camera use, wireless radios and AI workloads can reduce endurance. Style marketing separately claims up to 12 hours of typical use, approximately two hours of continuous translation and 45 minutes of continuous video recording; those are workload-specific figures (Style feature page).

Plan around a phone and charging. Rokid’s public compatible-devices page does not fully establish every operating-system minimum or which functions survive a Bluetooth or internet loss (compatible-devices page). Offline support should therefore be understood feature by feature, not as fully offline AI. A charging case is listed at $99 for Style and in Rokid’s product collection for the display model (Rokid collection).

Privacy and prescription trade-offs

A camera and microphones change the social rules of ordinary eyewear. Nearby people may not know whether they are being recorded, and meeting transcription should be announced and approved where required. Cloud AI can also involve sending voice or image data beyond the glasses. Style advertises a recording privacy indicator (Style feature page), but an indicator does not replace consent.

Rokid Glasses use a magnetic prescription frame; Style advertises prescription, progressive, photochromic, polarized, tinted and reading options. Rokid’s lens service is handled by a partner, and Rokid says it does not conduct eye exams, manufacture lenses or verify prescriptions (lens service). The insert or fitted lenses cost extra, and availability, turnaround, returns and reimbursement vary by country.

Who should buy Rokid’s glasses?

Buy Rokid Glasses when the display is the point

  • You specifically want in-view translation, captions, prompts or a teleprompter.
  • You accept carrying a phone and using experimental, cloud-connected software.
  • You value hands-free information more than phone-camera image quality.
  • You can budget separately for prescription inserts, lenses, accessories and any subscription-required features.

Choose Style for lighter camera-and-audio wearables

  • You mainly want first-person capture, calls, music, voice AI or spoken translation.
  • You prefer a lighter frame and broader conventional lens choices.
  • You do not need visible subtitles, navigation prompts or teleprompter text.

Wait or skip both if

  • You need dependable turn-by-turn navigation or fully offline AI.
  • You expect phone-level cameras or professional transcription.
  • You are uncomfortable with cameras and microphones in workplaces or public settings.
  • You want a device that works independently of a phone and cloud services.
  • You expect “all-day” claims to cover continuous recording or translation.

Verdict

Rokid’s glasses are surprisingly capable because they combine a display, camera, microphones, speakers, translation interface, teleprompter and AI assistant in eyewear that still looks broadly conventional. The best moments—glancing at a subtitle, following a prompt, asking about something you see or capturing a quick first-person clip—are genuinely useful.

They are not surprisingly reliable in every situation. Navigation failed in independent testing, AI can misinterpret speech or images, translation is not universally fluent, and the complete experience depends on the app, phone, network and potentially a subscription. Buy Rokid Glasses for the display’s specific advantage; buy Style for lighter camera-and-audio functionality; buy neither as a phone, professional camera or safety-critical navigation replacement.
