Mobvoi’s long-delayed Wear OS 3 upgrade was for five TicWatch models, not the entire range. The company published its guidance on December 12, 2023; its upgrade history records different rollout builds for GPS, LTE and other variants through February 2024. The upgrade was also reported to require a factory reset, so check your exact model and sync your data before installing.

Which TicWatches are eligible for Wear OS 3?

Mobvoi named five eligible models in its Wear OS 3 update guidance. The upgrade-history pages record separate builds for different model branches:

Model Recorded Wear OS 3 build Build date
TicWatch Pro 3 GPS RMRB.231020.007 October 20, 2023
TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra GPS RMRB.231020.007 October 20, 2023
TicWatch E3 RMKB.231020.007 October 20, 2023
TicWatch Pro 3 LTE RMRL.240228.002 February 28, 2024
TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra RMRL.240228.002 February 28, 2024

Build names and dates are from Mobvoi’s upgrade-history page and its alternate regional upgrade-history page. The Pro 3 name covers distinct GPS and LTE/cellular variants; do not assume the package history for one branch applies to another.

Why the update was notable

Wear OS 3 was introduced in 2021, but the compatible TicWatch Pro 3 generation and E3 remained on Wear OS 2 for an extended period. Mobvoi published its guidance on December 12, 2023, after upgrade-history entries for some GPS models and the E3 dated October 20, 2023. The LTE and non-GPS Ultra branch received a later recorded build, dated February 28, 2024. Contemporary coverage described the upgrade as unusually late compared with other Wear OS watches.

The gap was notable in part because Wear OS 3 changes the software and pairing environment, while Mobvoi’s watches combine platform software with features such as dual-display hardware, battery modes and Mobvoi health apps. Those are plausible engineering complications, not a complete explanation officially attributed to Mobvoi.

How to check and install the update

Confirm your model and build

  1. Check the model name in the watch settings or its product information, paying particular attention to GPS versus LTE/cellular and Ultra variants.
  2. On the watch, open Settings → System → AboutVersions → Build number to see the installed build. Mobvoi listed these pre-update builds in its update guidance: PMRB.220703.001, PMKB.211102.004, PMKB.211102.002 and PMRL.220704.001.

A build number helps identify a software branch, but it does not override the model and regional variant. A matching number alone does not prove that a watch can install a package intended for another model.

Check for software

  1. Swipe down on the watch and tap Settings.
  2. Tap System, then System updates.
  3. Let the watch check for available software and follow the on-screen prompts if an update is offered.

These are the manual update steps in Mobvoi’s upgrade instructions. For an automatic overnight update, Mobvoi says to keep the watch on its charger, above the required battery level and connected to Wi-Fi. Its documented overnight window is approximately 1:00–6:00. Mobvoi says an update typically finishes within an hour, but timing can vary; the watch cannot be used during installation and reboots when it is done.

Make sure the phone can complete setup

Mobvoi’s guidance tells Android users to check that their phone is compatible with the Mobvoi Health app. A watch update alone is not enough if the phone cannot complete the new companion-app and pairing setup. Update the app where possible and make sure the phone can connect to the watch before starting.

Prepare for a reset before upgrading

Assume the process may erase the watch. Contemporary reporting on the rollout said that the upgrade involved a factory reset. Treat the process as destructive unless Mobvoi’s instructions for your exact model explicitly say otherwise; do not count on local records or settings surviving.

  • Open Mobvoi Health and sync health and workout data before beginning. If recent records have not appeared, keep the watch paired, try syncing again, and postpone the reset until you have confirmed what can be recovered.
  • Make sure you know the Google account credentials needed to set up the watch again.
  • Record important settings and note the apps and watch faces you will need to reinstall.
  • Have the charger available and allow time for the reset, installation, reboot and re-pairing.

If syncing remains broken, Mobvoi’s upgrade-history page lists [email protected] as its after-sales contact. For records you can access but cannot sync, save or record what you can before proceeding.

What Wear OS 3 changes—and what it does not

The upgrade moves eligible watches to a newer Wear OS software base, with the Wear OS 3-era system and app environment and a revised Mobvoi companion-app and pairing workflow. That may improve compatibility with newer apps, but it does not guarantee that every app, older watch face or service will work on every model.

Features remain dependent on the watch hardware, software implementation and country. Mobvoi’s product pages for the TicWatch E3 and TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra GPS describe Snapdragon Wear 4100 hardware and note that feature availability can vary by platform or country. Google Pay availability is country-dependent; do not assume that functions advertised for another Wear OS watch are present on a TicWatch. Mobvoi also says health measurements such as blood oxygen and heart-rhythm features are not medical diagnoses.

What if your TicWatch is not on the list?

Mobvoi’s announcement names the five models in the eligibility table; it does not provide a complete table of every excluded TicWatch. Older models—including many Pro 2020, C2, C2+, S2, E2 and earlier Pro variants—were not included in the announced upgrade list. That is not the same as a model-by-model exclusion statement from Mobvoi, so check official support for your exact watch rather than inferring eligibility from its name or continued operation.

Do not install firmware intended for a different model or sideload an unofficial package without a verified, model-specific Mobvoi procedure. An incorrect package can leave the watch unusable. If your watch remains on its existing software, decide based on whether its battery, hardware and apps still meet your needs—not on an assumed future upgrade.

Should you update or keep the watch?

  • Update if your exact variant is named, the update is offered through the watch’s system updater, your companion phone is compatible, and you are prepared for a reset and re-pairing.
  • Keep using it without upgrading if it still meets your needs and the official update is not available for your exact variant. Avoid unofficial firmware as a workaround.
  • Consider replacing it if the watch is outside the announced eligibility list, its battery is no longer adequate, or apps you rely on no longer work. An eligible older TicWatch receiving Wear OS 3 is not thereby promised Wear OS 4 or a later platform release.

Mobvoi’s upgrade history documents Wear OS 3 builds for the listed branches; its update announcement does not establish a Wear OS 4 or newer upgrade path.
