The National Parks Apple Watch Activity Challenge took place on Sunday, August 24, 2025, and has ended. To earn its limited-edition award, participants had to record any workout lasting at least 20 minutes with an app that adds workouts to Health; the reported rules did not require a visit to a national park.
How the 2025 challenge worked
Contemporaneous reports said the challenge was open to Apple Watch users worldwide on August 24, 2025. The reported challenge description read: “On August 24, let’s celebrate the great outdoors and the world’s national parks. Earn this award by recording any workout of 20 minutes or more with any app that adds workouts to Health.” 9to5Mac reported that wording; the National Park Foundation also confirmed that users around the world could earn a digital award on the date.

- Recording method: Use an app that adds workouts to Apple Health.
- Reward: A limited-edition digital award and animated stickers.
Did you have to exercise in a national park?
No park visit was stated as a requirement. The reported rule allowed “any workout,” so it did not require travel, a hike, or exercise outdoors. The available reporting does not establish which Watch models or software versions qualified for this specific event.
Why August 24 is not a future challenge date
The date refers specifically to the 2025 event, which is over. National Parks Activity Challenge dates and requirements have changed between years, so past rules cannot confirm a future event. For example, Apple’s 2024 announcement set that year’s challenge for August 25 and required a workout of at least 20 minutes. Apple’s 2021 announcement instead called for a hike, walk, run, or wheelchair workout of at least one mile on August 28.

The separate Apple Pay campaign
The National Park Foundation said Apple ran a separate U.S.-only promotion from August 22 through August 29, 2025: it donated $10 for each qualifying Apple Pay purchase at an Apple Store, in the Apple Store app, or on apple.com, up to $1 million. That expired promotion was unrelated to earning the Watch award; an Apple Pay purchase was not a challenge requirement. The Foundation described the celebration as marking the National Park Service’s 109th anniversary.

In its 2024 announcement, Apple said it planned to add details for thousands of U.S. national-park hikes to Apple Maps, including filters for length, elevation, and route type, as well as turn-by-turn guidance and offline access. That announcement describes plans at the time; it does not establish the features’ current availability.
