How the Marine Nationale parachute strap reportedly began
In its March 2, 2023 feature, Fratello describes French Navy combat divers—nageurs de combat—developing the strap style during the 1960s and 1970s. The account says they needed a watch that would sit comfortably on the wrist and could be worn over a wetsuit.
Some divers used woven nylon fiber, also known as Perlon or nylon 6. Others repurposed elastic straps from bags used to carry reserve parachutes: they cut the elastic to length, threaded it through the watch lugs, then stitched it into a loop. Fratello describes a common version as khaki green with a yellow stripe running lengthwise. These details reflect the feature’s reporting rather than a separately verified Navy record.
A practical loop, not a modern adjustment system
The reported original construction was simple: elastic passed through the lugs and secured into a loop. Its stretch made it adaptable to the wrist and, when needed, to a wetsuit. Fratello contrasts that improvised design with later commercial versions that use a hook, a sliding metal loop and stitching to allow adjustment.

The watches associated with the story
Fratello identifies the Jacques Bianchi JB300 as a watch commonly issued to the divers in its account, and reports that watches could also be attached to instrument boards. Those are details from the 2023 feature, not independently corroborated issue records.
What NDC Straps says about its connection to the original
NDC Straps describes itself as a specialist brand established in 2016. Its website says its elastic is genuine Marine Nationale parachute elastic made in the original French factory. Those are the company’s own claims; they have not been independently verified here.

NDC lists several styles, including Original, Stealth Black, single-pass and two-piece straps. The company also claims to have been the first maker of this type of strap. Treat that as promotional language rather than established priority: the material available for this article does not independently establish who first manufactured a commercial version.
Fratello’s 2023 feature identifies Matthew Jackson as NDC’s owner/operator and reports that Tudor ordered straps made to the original specification for boutique displays. That report describes a past order; it does not establish that Tudor boutiques currently stock NDC straps.

The historical account does not establish that elastic is objectively safer or more durable than woven nylon. It also provides no controlled durability tests or performance ranking, so comfort, stretch and preference should be evaluated for the particular strap and use.
What to check before buying or fitting one
- Exact lug width: Confirm the watch’s lug spacing and the strap’s stated width. Fratello’s author reported that the strap he examined measured slightly over 21 mm and could fit 20 mm or 22 mm gaps, including the 21 mm Tudor Pelagos 39. That is one individual observation, not a universal fit specification.
- Strap length and intended wear: Check whether the length suits your wrist and whether you plan to wear the strap over a wetsuit. A strap that fits on a bare wrist may not provide enough length over thicker gear.
- Adjustment hardware: Compare the hook-and-slider arrangement with the simpler loop or woven constructions, and make sure you understand how the particular model is secured and adjusted.
- Material and provenance: Check the individual product page for its stated material and origin. NDC’s claim about original-factory French elastic is a company claim, and other makers’ parachute-style straps should not be assumed to share that provenance.
- Installation: If changing the strap requires removing spring bars, use compatible spring bars and an appropriate strap tool, and verify the watch’s requirements before fitting. Do not force a strap that does not sit correctly between the lugs.
Why the strap’s origin remains a reported story
The historical account in Fratello is detailed, but the material available here does not include a primary French Navy archive confirming the precise dates, inventors or issue practices. It is most accurate to describe the strap as a style reported to have emerged from divers’ practical improvisation, rather than to present every origin detail as conclusively documented fact. Modern products can echo that design without necessarily sharing the same materials or manufacturing history.
