IWC dates the Portugieser’s origin to 1939, when two Portuguese businessmen ordered large wristwatches designed for chronometer-like precision. The original Reference IW325 paired a pocket-watch movement with a 41.5 mm wristwatch case—an unusually large format for its era—and established dial details that remain central to the collection’s identity. Later Portugiesers added complications, but some mechanisms associated with the family first appeared elsewhere in IWC’s catalogue.
When was the IWC Portugieser first made?
IWC traces the collection to 1939. In the company’s account, two businessmen from Portugal ordered a series of large wristwatches intended to run with the precision of marine chronometers. IWC’s official history places the commission at the beginning of the Portugieser line. IWC’s company-history timeline and its press history of the watch provide the company’s account of the origin.
Why was the first Portugieser unusual?
A pocket-watch movement in a wristwatch
For the original watch, IWC adapted its calibre 74 hunter pocket-watch movement to a wristwatch case. The movement’s small seconds were positioned at 90 degrees to the crown, a consequence of the movement’s layout. IWC described the calibre as very accurate, aligning with the buyers’ request for chronometer-like precision.
A large case and an open, legible dial
Reference IW325 measured 41.5 mm across. IWC’s press history notes that this “far exceeded the dimensions of conventional wristwatches of the era.” Its railway-track chapter ring, Arabic numerals and slender feuille hands gave the watch a clear, open appearance. These features established a visual vocabulary associated with the Portugieser family.

How did the Portugieser collection develop?
IWC’s company chronology records later Portugieser development, including perpetual-calendar watches with a double moon display. The collection expanded further during the Richemont era. On 24 April 2020, IWC announced new family members that included an automatic model, a perpetual calendar, a nautical sports chronograph and a watch with tide indication. That release documents the announcement on that date; it does not establish that those particular models remain available now. IWC’s 2020 announcement describes the additions.
Did the Portugieser introduce IWC’s Kurt Klaus perpetual calendar?
No. IWC says the perpetual calendar associated with watchmaker Kurt Klaus first appeared in the Da Vinci Chronograph Perpetual Calendar in 1985. That is the mechanism’s debut in IWC’s catalogue, not its debut in the Portugieser collection. The Portugieser later adopted perpetual-calendar models, and IWC’s current Portugieser Perpetual Calendar page describes the complication within the present-day family. IWC’s current Portugieser Perpetual Calendar page gives current family information.

What do current Portugieser Perpetual Calendar specifications tell you?
IWC’s current collection page presents Perpetual Calendar models in 42 mm and 44 mm sizes and describes the IWC-manufactured 52000 calibre family with a 168-hour, or seven-day, power reserve. These are page-level descriptions rather than specifications that should automatically be assigned to every individual reference. Check the exact model page for the case size, calibre and other details of a particular watch.
Reference-specific figures can differ. IWC’s archived page for reference IW503203 lists a 44.2 mm case, a 22 mm strap width, calibre 51614 and a 168-hour power reserve. Those specifications belong to IW503203; the 22 mm strap width, in particular, should not be generalized to the Portugieser line. IWC’s archived IW503203 page lists the reference’s details.
