Neova: What Happened to Enhancia’s Gesture-Controlled MIDI Ring?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neova was a real wearable MIDI controller, not a conventional smart ring. French startup Enhancia designed it to sense hand and finger movements and send mapped expression data to a DAW, synthesizer, or other MIDI setup. Its Kickstarter ran from April 17 to May 17, 2018, raising €70,779 from 381 backers against a €50,000 goal. In 2026, however, Neova should be treated as an archived or discontinued product: historical retail records exist, but there is no reliable evidence of an active official sales, software, or support channel.

What Neova was

Neova was a finger-worn, connected MIDI ring made by Enhancia, a French music-technology startup. The company was previously associated with the Oria ring name before adopting the Enhancia brand; a public profile by team member Sylvain Comelli records that company history (Sylvain Comelli’s public profile).

Rather than replacing a keyboard, guitar, wind controller, or pad, Neova was intended to add hands-free expression. The idea was to let a musician keep playing a primary instrument while using small hand movements to modulate pitch, effects, filters, or other MIDI-controlled parameters.

The proposed signal path was:

Hand movement → Neova ring → wireless hub → USB or MIDI → DAW, synthesizer, or effects chain

#1 Best Overall
Enhancia Neova MIDI Ring Controller with Hub. Advanced gesture MIDI controller with standalone CPU and nine ultra-low latency sensors (NEOVA) Distributed by Roland.
  • Complete MIDI Ring Controller and Hub solution. Everything you need to add expression and creativity to your MIDI instruments.
  • Control sound effects with natural and intuitive hand gestures while keeping your hands on the keys.
  • Compact and lightweight – At just 100 x 100 x 20mm, the Hub is easy to place in your workspace. And you won't even notice the Ring at only 5g expression has never been more comfortable.
  • Make your instruments more powerful – Neova MIDI Ring is an accessory compatible with any of your synths or DAWs, designed to add several dimensions of control.
  • Control several parameters at the same time – explore the granularity of your hardware and software sounds using our 4 gestures in the most natural way possible. Adding a vibrato in the same way as guitar and string players is now possible using Neova. Each gesture can be assigned independently to the parameter of your choice

Enhancia’s launch coverage describes nine motion sensors and a proprietary wireless protocol. Those are product claims, not independent laboratory findings (Everything Recording; AudioNewsRoom).

How the gesture controls were supposed to work

The ring detected movement, the hub received that wireless data, and software translated it into MIDI messages. The musician then assigned those messages to parameters in a DAW, software instrument, hardware synthesizer, or effects processor. A gesture therefore had no single universal sound; its result depended on the preset, MIDI mapping, sensitivity, and the receiving instrument.

Gesture Intended musical role Important qualification
Vibrato Modulate pitch or another continuous parameter while a note is sustained. It behaves like vibrato only when mapped to an appropriate destination.
Bend Create pitch-bend-like movement or continuous parameter changes. It is not automatically identical to a guitar string bend.
Tilt Use hand orientation to vary an effect or synthesis control. Calibration and mapping determine the usable range.
Wave Control a parameter with an airborne hand movement. Large or accidental movements could affect repeatability.
Roll Add a rotational control dimension for effects, mixing, or synthesis. The exact response depends on the selected preset or MIDI assignment.

Launch-era descriptions identify five gestures—Vibrato, Bend, Tilt, Wave, and Roll (Everything Recording; AudioNewsRoom). A later MusiX retailer listing says the system supports four gestures, so the count is inconsistent in surviving documentation rather than a settled specification (MusiX listing).

Hardware, hub, and software

Reported package contents were the Neova ring, wireless hub, USB cable, MIDI cables, eight ring sizes, Dashboard software, and Plume-related sound software. Dashboard was intended for configuration and mapping; Plume was presented as a sound-generation and preset environment with sounds designed for Neova (High-Def Digest).

The MusiX record reports 16 loadable presets, an eight-hour battery, a 15-metre range, hardware-synth compatibility, and DAW integration. These are retailer-reported historical specifications, not guaranteed 2026 operating characteristics.

Specification or feature What the surviving material says Status of the evidence
Wireless latency Approximately 2 ms in launch coverage; 1 ms in the MusiX listing. Conflicting product claims; neither figure is independently verified.
Wireless range 15 metres. Retailer-reported.
Battery life Eight hours. Retailer-reported.
Presets 16 loadable presets. Retailer-reported.
Sensors Nine motion sensors. Campaign/product coverage; not independently tested.
Connections USB hub connection and MIDI connections. Supported by product coverage.

Enhancia’s launch material promoted roughly 2 ms latency and described the protocol as eight times more reactive than Bluetooth (AudioNewsRoom). Because a later retailer lists 1 ms, both numbers should be read as attributed marketing or retail figures, not a definitive measurement.

Using Neova in a music setup

  1. Wear the ring in the appropriate size and connect or pair it with the Neova hub.
  2. Connect the hub to a computer by USB, or to compatible hardware using MIDI cables.
  3. Open Dashboard or the relevant Neova software and select a preset.
  4. Map each gesture to a MIDI Continuous Controller, pitch-related function, effect, or synthesizer parameter.
  5. Enable the MIDI input in the DAW or instrument and test sensitivity, thresholds, and smoothing.
  6. Play the main instrument while moving the ring hand to alter the assigned controls.

The available documentation supports this general USB/MIDI workflow, but does not provide a dependable current manual with operating-system requirements, firmware versions, exact screens, or troubleshooting procedures (High-Def Digest). Claims that it works with “any DAW” should therefore be understood as a broad MIDI-compatibility proposition, not proof of testing with every modern DAW.

Who Neova suited—and who it did not

Good candidates

  • Keyboard players wanting modulation without leaving the keys.
  • Electronic performers controlling effects while both hands remain on an instrument.
  • Wind and string players seeking an additional expression axis.
  • Live producers and experimental musicians interested in embodied control.

Poorer candidates

  • Anyone seeking a conventional keyboard, pad, knob, or fader controller.
  • Users who require guaranteed current drivers, firmware updates, or vendor support.
  • Performers whose technique or choreography makes hand motion inconsistent.
  • Buyers looking for the lowest-cost way to generate MIDI expression.

What the Kickstarter proved

The campaign record shows a launch from April 17 to May 17, 2018. It raised €70,779 against a €50,000 target from 381 backers—about 142% of the goal, with an average pledge of approximately €185.77 (BackerTracker campaign record).

Contemporary reports said the goal was reached in roughly six hours, that early-bird packages began at about $255, and that shipping was projected to start in March 2019 (Everything Recording; High-Def Digest). Those were campaign promises and projections; funding success alone does not establish on-time or complete delivery to every backer.

Did Neova become a real product?

A later public account by founder Damien Le Boulaire says Enhancia industrialized one hardware product, distributed it across three continents, and signed a distribution agreement with Roland (Damien Le Boulaire’s public account). This supports the conclusion that Neova progressed beyond a concept prototype, although the statements are retrospective and not an audited support or sales notice.

MusiX carried a 2021 product record with package details and specifications, but marked it as “soon in backorder.” That is evidence of historical retail listing, not proof of current stock.

What happened to Enhancia and Neova?

Le Boulaire’s later account says the company eventually decided to end operations after difficulties involving the pandemic, component supply, financing, and the scale of work needed to continue. On that evidence, Neova is best treated in 2026 as discontinued or unsupported unless a seller can demonstrate otherwise. No current official purchase path, software-download page, replacement-parts program, or maintained support portal is established by the available sources.

Risks when buying a used Neova

  • Missing hub: the ring’s proprietary wireless link makes a ring without its matching hub potentially unusable.
  • Software dependency: Dashboard or Plume may no longer be downloadable, activatable, or compatible with a current computer.
  • Incomplete sizing kit: the reported eight-size package may not be included with a second-hand unit.
  • Battery and charging wear: an old battery may no longer deliver the reported eight-hour figure.
  • Unproven compatibility: ask the seller to demonstrate pairing and visible MIDI output in a current setup.
  • Uncertain support: firmware, drivers, replacement cables, and repairs may have no official source.

Neova transmits control data; it is not itself a synthesizer, audio interface, or audio instrument. Its usefulness depends on the complete ring-and-hub ecosystem and on the buyer’s ability to keep the software and MIDI routing working.

Is Neova worth buying in 2026?

Only as a carefully verified used or archival purchase. Before paying, require the ring, matching hub, charging and MIDI/USB cables, and any available sizing parts; ask for a live pairing demonstration and MIDI output; and confirm that the required software runs on the intended computer. Do not buy on the strength of the old Kickstarter page or archived latency and battery claims alone.

For a new purchase, compare currently supported categories instead: MIDI expression controllers, wireless MIDI foot controllers, motion or IMU-based systems, breath controllers, touch strips, and DIY sensor-to-MIDI devices. Identifying a single modern replacement would require current product research, because Neova’s distinctive gesture system does not map neatly to one universal substitute.
