Apple did not announce an Apple Watch Ultra 3 at its September 9, 2024 event. Instead, it introduced the existing Apple Watch Ultra 2 in a new black titanium finish, which Apple described as “satin-black titanium.” The U.S. launch price was $799, with preorders opening September 9 and store availability beginning September 20, 2024.
This was a design and accessory update rather than a new Ultra generation. Apple eventually introduced the Apple Watch Ultra 3 on September 9, 2025, so the 2024 headline is historical, not a statement about Apple’s current lineup.

What Apple announced on September 9, 2024
Apple’s announcement covered an Apple Watch Ultra 2 in black titanium, not a new numbered model. The official release calls the product “Apple Watch Ultra 2 in black titanium” and describes its appearance as a “satin-black titanium finish.” The announcement also added coordinated accessories and promoted watchOS 11 features.

Contemporary coverage reported the event as the one where Apple introduced a black Ultra 2 instead of an Ultra 3 (9to5Mac’s event report). That does not prove Apple formally canceled or delayed an Ultra 3; it establishes only that no Ultra 3 was announced at that event.
New finish and matching hardware
- The case remained Grade 5 titanium but received a custom blasting process and a diamond-like carbon (DLC) physical-vapor-deposition coating.
- Apple described the coating as durable and scratch-resistant. That wording does not mean the finish is scratch-proof or immune to chips, scuffs, or edge wear.
- The rear crystal used matching dark zirconia, extending the darker appearance beyond the case.
- Trail Loop, Alpine Loop, and Ocean Band configurations gained black hardware options.
- Apple said the black and natural titanium versions used 95 percent recycled titanium.
These details made the black model more than an uncoated color variation, but they did not change the underlying Ultra 2 platform.
Titanium Milanese Loop
Apple also introduced a Titanium Milanese Loop in black and natural titanium. It is woven from aerospace-grade titanium, designed to resist corrosion, and closes with a dual-button, parachute-style buckle. Apple positioned it as a band that could suit water activities while also looking more formal.

Apple Watch Hermès Ultra 2
A separate luxury configuration paired a natural titanium case with a Hermès En Mer band in Bleu Nuit and a Hermès Maritime watch face. Its U.S. launch price was $1,399. It was a premium Ultra 2 configuration, not a successor to the black model.
What stayed the same
The black watch was still an Apple Watch Ultra 2. Apple did not announce a new Ultra-generation processor, redesigned case, larger display, higher battery rating, satellite communications, 5G cellular connectivity, or a new Ultra-specific health sensor in 2024.

The Ultra 2 announcement continued to list the existing model’s headline capabilities, including its GPS, display brightness, and battery figures. The values above are launch claims for their respective announcements, not current August or October 2026 prices.
watchOS 11 was an operating-system update, not a black-model exclusive
Apple promoted watchOS 11 alongside the black Ultra 2. The software was scheduled for September 16, 2024 and required an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18. Apple cautioned that feature availability varies by device and region.

- The Vitals app for reviewing health and fitness measurements.
- Sleep apnea notifications, subject to regulatory, regional, age, and hardware limits; these notifications are not a medical diagnosis.
- A Tides app and additional Action button customization.
- Smart Stack improvements and a redesigned Photos watch face.
- Translate, Check In, Double Tap scrolling in supported apps, and notification summaries.
Most of these capabilities arrived through watchOS 11 and were available to multiple compatible Apple Watch models. They were not special hardware benefits of the black finish.

It made sense for appearance-first buyers
- You wanted the Ultra 2’s large case, battery, durability, GPS, and cellular options but preferred a darker finish.
- You valued coordinated black hardware on the Trail Loop, Alpine Loop, or Ocean Band.
- You wanted the new Titanium Milanese Loop or a stealthier, more formal look.
- You were buying during the 2024 launch and did not need a new hardware platform.
Waiting was rational for owners seeking major hardware changes
- First-generation Ultra and Ultra 2 owners wanting more than a cosmetic refresh had little hardware reason to upgrade.
- Anyone specifically expecting a larger display, longer battery life, satellite communication, or newer cellular technology had a reason to wait.
- Buyers particularly concerned about cosmetic wear may have preferred natural titanium, since damage to a contrasting coating can be more noticeable. Apple’s durability claim does not eliminate that trade-off.
The later Ultra 3 made the distinction clear. Apple’s September 9, 2025 announcement added satellite communications, 5G, a larger display, and up to 42 hours of battery life (Apple’s Ultra 3 announcement).
What happened next: the Ultra 3 arrived in 2025
Apple introduced the Apple Watch Ultra 3 on September 9, 2025, with black and natural titanium finishes, a $799 U.S. starting price, satellite communications, 5G cellular connectivity, a larger display, and a claimed battery life of up to 42 hours. That launch ended the one-cycle gap created by the 2024 finish update.

Verdict
The 2024 black Apple Watch Ultra 2 was a design-led refresh, not a hidden Ultra 3. Its DLC-coated satin-black titanium case, dark rear crystal, matching band hardware, and Titanium Milanese Loop gave buyers a new look, while the core Ultra 2 hardware and battery claims stayed in place. It was compelling if appearance mattered most; buyers seeking substantive technical improvements were better served by waiting for the Ultra 3 that Apple announced the following year.
