If the red light is coming from the inside of your Oura Ring, it usually means the ring’s blood-oxygen (SpO₂) sensors are active. Oura uses visible red and invisible infrared LEDs to estimate reflected light from your finger during sleep. The glow is a sign that sensing is taking place—not a low-oxygen alarm, overheating warning, or diagnosis.
A red LED on the charger is different. Check which device is illuminated before troubleshooting.
First, identify where the red light is
| What you see | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Red glow from the ring’s inner surface | Blood-oxygen sensing is active | Usually normal, especially during sleep, a nap, or prolonged stillness |
| Red light on the charger or charging case | A charging, alignment, power, or charger issue | Follow Oura’s charger troubleshooting guidance; it is not the SpO₂ sensor |
| Red light visible through your skin or on a nearby surface | The ring’s internal red LEDs are shining through or reflecting | Still most likely blood-oxygen sensing |
| Green light inside the ring | Optical heart-rate sensing | Different sensor system; red and green activity together is not automatically an error |
Oura describes a white breathing light while charging and green when the ring is full. A red charger LED should be handled as a charging problem, not interpreted as a health reading: Oura charger instructions.
What the red LEDs measure
Red and infrared light pass into the finger. Oxygenated and deoxygenated blood absorb and reflect those wavelengths differently, allowing the ring to estimate peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO₂). Oura uses the resulting signal for Average Blood Oxygen and breathing-related variation during sleep. Infrared light is generally invisible, so the red glow you can see is only one part of the optical system.

Oura says Blood Oxygen Sensing is available on Gen3 and later models with an active membership on iOS and Android. The feature is sleep-focused: measurements require a sleep period longer than three hours, and the app reports the longest sleep period of the day. This is not continuous medical monitoring. See Oura’s Blood Oxygen Sensing documentation.
Oura Ring 4 specifications identify red and infrared LEDs for blood-oxygen measurements, while green LEDs support heart-rate sensing: Oura Ring 4 sensor information and Live Heart Rate.

Why can it glow while you are awake?
The ring activates SpO₂ sensing when it detects—or infers—that you may be asleep. That inference can be wrong or can describe a daytime sleep-like period. A red glow may therefore appear during:
- A nap
- The transition into sleep
- Extended sitting or lying still
- Low-movement periods with a resting heart-rate pattern
- The minutes after you remove the ring following a sleep-like period
Daytime activation alone does not prove the ring is defective. Brief or intermittent illumination without heat, damage, skin symptoms, or persistent data problems is generally consistent with normal sensing.

Does a red light mean your oxygen is low?
No. The color indicates that the SpO₂ sensor is operating; it does not communicate your oxygen result. To see a result, sync the ring and review the Blood Oxygen section of the Oura App after a qualifying sleep period.
Oura describes an overnight average of 95–100% as generally normal, but that is not a universal medical cutoff. Altitude, congestion, illness, alcohol, sleep position, movement, circulation, ring fit, age, and overall sleep quality can affect estimates. Look for persistent patterns rather than reacting to one unusual value. Oura states that the ring is not a medical device; seek clinical advice for symptoms or ongoing concerns instead of using the ring as a diagnosis.

Is the light safe?
Oura says its infrared, red, and green LEDs produce no appreciable heat and pose no health hazard: Product Safety & Use. That general statement does not make a physically damaged ring safe to wear.
- Remove the ring if it becomes unusually warm.
- Stop wearing it if you see cracking, sharp edges, or other surface damage.
- Contact a clinician if you develop significant irritation, swelling, or pain.
- Seek prompt medical attention if a finger looks different from the other hand, becomes very uncomfortable, or is difficult to free from the ring.
How to turn off the red-light feature
To disable Blood Oxygen Sensing using Oura’s current app guidance:

- Open the Oura App.
- Tap the menu in the upper-left corner of the home screen.
- Select Blood Oxygen Sensing.
- Toggle the feature off.
The ring must be connected to the app over Bluetooth for the setting to change. App labels and navigation can change with software updates, so use the current wording shown in your app. Turning the feature off removes overnight blood-oxygen and breathing-variation insights as well as that sensor activity.
If the red light stays on: a graduated troubleshooting checklist
When it is probably normal
- The glow appears mainly during sleep, naps, or long periods of stillness.
- It is brief or intermittent.
- The ring is not hot and has no visible damage.
- Your app is receiving expected sleep data.
Basic checks
- Confirm the light is on the ring, not the charger.
- Open the app and check whether Blood Oxygen Sensing is enabled.
- Sync over Bluetooth, then install available app and firmware updates.
- Orient the sensors on the underside, or palm side, of your finger.
- Check the fit: it should be secure enough for optical contact but not uncomfortably tight.
- Charge the ring before your next sleep period; Oura recommends at least 30% before bed.
Incorrect orientation, loose or overly tight fit, movement, low battery, Airplane Mode, Bluetooth status, and outdated software can all affect blood-oxygen data. Oura Ring 4 charging typically takes 20–80 minutes depending on starting charge level; that timing is model-specific and should not be generalized to every generation.
When to contact Oura
Contact support if the red light remains continuously active for unusually long periods without sleep-like activity, the app shows persistent gaps or implausible readings, the ring becomes warm, charging fails, physical damage is visible, or the light continues after you disable the feature and sync. Oura lists 24/7 chat and phone support by appointment through its Troubleshooting hub. A factory reset should be a later, support-directed step because it can disrupt pairing and require setup again.
Does SpO₂ sensing reduce battery life?
Yes. Blood-oxygen sensing uses additional LEDs and affects overall battery consumption, although the effect varies by model, firmware, fit, feature use, and battery condition. Keeping it enabled provides overnight oxygen and breathing-variation information; disabling it may reduce that sensor activity but removes those insights. There is no single reliable percentage or number of hours for every Oura generation.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →When this is a product issue versus a health issue
- Product question: A persistent glow, missing data, charging failure, pairing problem, heat, or damage belongs with Oura support.
- Health question: Repeated concerning trends, breathing symptoms, or feeling unwell belong with a healthcare professional.
- Urgent physical problem: A swollen or trapped finger requires prompt medical attention and safe ring removal.
For most owners, an inner red glow is simply the Oura Ring doing its sleep-oriented blood-oxygen sensing. The charger’s red indicator, physical damage, unusual warmth, or persistent malfunction calls for a different response.
