The June 20, 2025 Oakley-Meta teaser is no longer an upcoming launch. It became the Oakley Meta HSTN, followed by the sports-focused Oakley Meta Vanguard in September 2025. HSTN starts at $399 in the United States, while the limited HSTN edition and Vanguard were announced at $499. Both are displayless AI smart glasses, not full augmented-reality headsets.
What the June 2025 teaser actually revealed
Oakley and Meta promoted a June 20, 2025 announcement with the line “The next evolution arrives June 20.” Before the reveal, the teaser established a new Oakley Meta identity but did not confirm a product name, complete specifications, price, or an in-lens display. Contemporary coverage captured that uncertainty, including Cinco Días’ report.
Meta’s announcement identified the product as the Oakley Meta line, made with Oakley parent EssilorLuxottica. The first model was Oakley Meta HSTN (pronounced “How-stuhn”), positioned for athletes and active users rather than as a conventional augmented-reality headset.
Oakley Meta HSTN: the first model
What it does
- Captures first-person photos and video through a built-in camera.
- Plays music, podcasts and calls through open-ear speakers.
- Provides hands-free access to Meta AI through voice commands.
- Uses voice and touch controls, including a capture button.
- Can share captured media to supported services.
Meta’s launch examples included asking about wind conditions while golfing and telling the glasses to record video. Those are company-described use cases, not independent performance tests. Contextual answers depend on the paired phone, network connection, software and regional feature availability.

Price, editions and availability
Meta announced the standard HSTN collection from $399 in the United States and a limited-edition version at $499. The limited edition was scheduled for preorder on July 11, 2025, with the broader collection planned for later that summer. The announcement listed initial markets including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Australia, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark; Mexico, India and the United Arab Emirates were identified as future markets. Current stock, lens configurations and shipping vary by country, so check the live HSTN product page.
Oakley Meta Vanguard: the sports-specific follow-up
Meta announced Oakley Meta Vanguard on September 17, 2025, with a stated October 21 launch date and a U.S. price of $499. It is aimed at high-intensity outdoor sports rather than general everyday wear.
- Wraparound frame for a more secure sports fit.
- IP67 dust and water resistance, a higher rating than HSTN’s IPX4.
- Oakley PRIZM lens options.
- Three-point fit system and three replaceable nose pads, including low- and high-bridge options.
- Designed to work with cycling helmets and hats.
- Garmin and Strava integrations.
- Open-ear speakers that Meta says are six decibels louder than HSTN.
The stronger protection, retention system and sports integrations make Vanguard the more logical starting point for cycling, running, skiing, hiking and similarly demanding activities. That is product-positioning guidance, not an independent durability or audio test. See Oakley’s current Vanguard listing for configuration and availability.

These are not display-equipped AR glasses
The HSTN and Vanguard launch materials describe cameras, speakers, AI and phone-connected functions, but do not identify an in-lens display. The accurate description is displayless AI smart glasses. They cannot provide an AR navigation overlay or other visual information directly in your field of view.
That distinction is important because EssilorLuxottica’s 2026 materials separately identify “Meta Ray-Ban Display” as display-equipped eyewear. Do not assume that product’s capabilities apply to Oakley Meta models; the distinction appears in the company’s 2026 release.
What you need before buying
Oakley’s current HSTN information lists the following requirements:
- An Android phone running Android 10 or later, or an iPhone running iOS 14.4 or later, for the cited configuration.
- The Meta AI app and a Meta account.
- Wireless internet access for the full AI, streaming and sharing experience.
- Location services enabled on Android where required.
- A USB-C charging plug or USB power source. Oakley’s cited configuration does not include a USB-C cable.
- Periodic software updates.
These glasses are not standalone cellular computers. If the phone, account, app, network or a required update is unavailable, the complete advertised experience is unavailable. Confirm the current supported-phone list and regional features on the Oakley HSTN FAQ and product page.

Battery, weather and privacy limitations
Battery expectations
“Up to eight hours” is not a guaranteed full day of continuous recording, calls, music or AI queries. The charging case extends use but must itself be charged, and quick-charge figures are manufacturer specifications rather than independent measurements.
Weather and sports use
IPX4 on HSTN should not be treated as full waterproofing. Vanguard’s IP67 rating is better suited to dust and water exposure, but it does not mean unlimited submersion or immunity from physical abuse. For athletes, fit, helmet compatibility, nose-pad adjustment and lens choice may matter more than the AI functions.
Recording etiquette
Camera-equipped glasses create the same privacy issues as any wearable camera. Observe the visible capture indicator and local recording laws. Avoid recording private conversations or wearing them in changing areas, sensitive workplaces, schools or gyms where cameras may be prohibited. Meta’s launch material does not establish every current privacy control or regional rule; review the current Meta AI app’s privacy documentation before relying on a particular setting. Captured files should be reviewed, imported, shared and deleted deliberately rather than treated like invisible background data.

Oakley advertises prescription configurations across its Meta collection, with an eligible range of approximately -6.00 to +4.00 for the referenced collection information. That range is not universal: model, lens type, colorway, region and prescription can change eligibility. Confirm the exact configuration through Oakley’s prescription flow or an authorized optical retailer using the Oakley Meta collection page.

- OAKLEY META VANGUARD DELIVERS ATHLETIC INTELLIGENCE — Wearable technology and smart AI glasses for men and women that take your athletic performance to the next level. Capture action-packed moments with hands-free video recording, get workout metrics, listen to your hype mix and more.
- UP TO 9 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — A fully charged pair of Oakley Meta Vanguard glasses can last up to 9 hours of typical use. Plus, the charging case provides an additional 36 hours of charging on the go.

For a lower-cost Meta AI option, Meta and EssilorLuxottica announced a separate Meta Glasses collection in June 2026, starting at $299 and offered in 26 styles without Oakley or Ray-Ban branding. It is a broader fashion-oriented alternative, not a replacement for Vanguard’s wraparound design, PRIZM optics or sports fit.
Ray-Ban Meta remains the more conventional everyday-style alternative. Ordinary sport sunglasses paired with earbuds and a phone remain the simplest lower-cost option, but they do not provide integrated first-person capture or hands-free Meta AI.
Who should choose which model?
- Choose HSTN if you want everyday AI, open-ear audio, travel recording or a lower entry price and do not need heavy-duty weather protection.
- Choose Vanguard if cycling, running, skiing, hiking, helmet use, stronger weather resistance or Garmin and Strava integration is central to your use.
- Choose neither if your priority is an in-lens display, full AR navigation, standalone cellular operation or a device that works without a phone and Meta account.
- Check prescription eligibility first if corrective lenses are essential; not every model and colorway supports every prescription.
The Bottom Line
The 2025 teaser led to a real, now-established product line: HSTN is the general-purpose Oakley Meta model, while Vanguard adds a tougher wraparound sports design and IP67 protection. Both deliver camera, open-ear audio and Meta AI through a paired phone, but neither is confirmed to have an in-lens display.
