Short answer: Google Assistant is already unsupported on Wear OS 2.x watches. On newer, eligible devices, Google is shifting the wrist-based assistant experience toward Gemini, but compatibility is selective rather than guaranteed by the brand or operating-system number alone. Check your exact model and installed Wear OS version before buying a replacement.
A reported September 4, 2026 shutdown for Google Assistant on Android and Wear OS has not been matched by a first-party Google announcement in the available evidence, so treat that date as unconfirmed reporting. The confirmed rule today is narrower: Wear OS 2.x is outside Assistant support, while select Wear OS 3.0-or-later watches may retain Assistant and select Wear OS 4.0-or-later watches may use Gemini.
Which Wear OS watches are affected?
The decisive factor is normally the watch’s software generation, not its launch year or logo. A Fossil, Mobvoi, Samsung or other watch can fall into different categories depending on the exact model and updates it received.
| Installed software | Google’s current position | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Wear OS 2.x | Google Assistant is no longer supported. | Do not expect a reset or reinstall to restore official support. |
| Wear OS 3.x | Assistant works on select devices; version number alone is not a guarantee. | Check the exact model, phone, region and available app updates. |
| Wear OS 4.x or later | Gemini works on select devices. Assistant availability may change as Google transitions services. | Look for Gemini in the watch Play Store and verify compatibility before upgrading. |
Google’s compatibility wording is “select,” so do not assume every older Galaxy Watch, Fossil Gen 5, TicWatch or other early Wear OS model has the same status. Confirm the installed version and model against Google’s Assistant and Gemini requirements.

Google announced Gemini’s Wear OS rollout on July 9, 2025. Wear OS 7 was announced in June 2026, but newer platform releases still do not make every older watch eligible.
How to check whether your watch is affected
- On the watch, open Settings.
- Open System, About or System information; labels vary by manufacturer.
- Record the displayed Wear OS version and watch model.
- Open System updates and install any offered update.
- In the watch’s Play Store, check whether Google Assistant or Gemini is listed and install updates where available.
- If necessary, inspect software details or start an update from the phone’s companion app.
Also note your phone model and Android version, Google Play services version if shown, country, language and Google account. These details can affect eligibility. An update offer does not promise that an unsupported model can jump to a newer Wear OS generation.
Is Assistant gone, or is it just failing?
Official incompatibility
If the watch is on Wear OS 2.x, the missing service is an official platform limitation under Google’s current policy. Reinstalling an app cannot change the watch’s underlying operating-system generation.

The Assistant-to-Gemini transition
On an eligible newer watch, Google may present Gemini instead of the previous Assistant experience. Gemini can be started by saying “Hey Google,” pressing and holding the side button, or tapping the Gemini app icon, according to Google’s Wear OS announcement.

A supported watch can still show connection or assistant errors because of an offline phone or watch, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi pairing trouble, an outdated Google app or Play services package, account and permission settings, regional or language limits, a stalled update, or manufacturer software bugs. A “Can’t reach Google” message is not by itself proof of a shutdown.
What replaces Google Assistant?
Gemini is Google’s strategic successor on supported Wear OS watches, not a guaranteed one-for-one clone. Users may see differences in response style, command coverage, smart-home controls, calendar and reminder actions, timers and alarms, calls, messaging, app integrations, and how much work is done on the watch versus the phone.

Availability can depend on the watch model, Wear OS release, paired Android phone, account, language and country. LTE does not automatically make the assistant independent of a phone, and iPhone compatibility should not be assumed for newer Wear OS setup and assistant features. The Wear OS device page lists the participating ecosystem, but support must still be checked by exact model.
Troubleshoot before replacing the watch
- Confirm the Wear OS version. Wear OS 2.x means the issue is compatibility, not a routine app glitch.
- Install watch and phone updates. Update Google apps from the watch Play Store when the store offers them.
- Restart both devices. This clears many stalled services and pairing states.
- Test connectivity. Confirm Bluetooth pairing, internet access on the phone, and Wi-Fi or LTE on the watch where applicable.
- Check the Google account and permissions. Verify that the intended account is signed in and microphone, contacts, calendar or messaging permissions have not been denied.
- Try every launch method. Use the side-button shortcut or app icon as well as the “Hey Google” hotword.
- Unpair and re-pair only last. Re-pairing may require setup again and can trigger a reset, so back up anything the companion app supports first.
Avoid treating unofficial APK sideloads as a fix. Packages can be incompatible, unsigned for the watch, insecure, revoked or blocked by server-side checks, and they cannot turn a Wear OS 2.x device into a supported platform.
Do you need a new phone?
Watch eligibility and phone compatibility are separate questions. A watch may meet Gemini’s Wear OS requirement yet still need a compatible Android phone, current companion software, a Google account and an internet connection. Check the phone requirement for the exact watch and country before purchasing. An LTE model can reduce dependence on the phone for some functions, but it does not guarantee a fully standalone assistant.

Keep the watch or replace it?
Keep it when the rest still works
- Notifications, alarms, timers, workouts, payments and basic apps meet your needs.
- You rarely use voice commands.
- Battery life, reliability and security support remain acceptable.
- Replacing the watch would cost more than the missing convenience justifies.
Losing Assistant alone does not disable every other watch service. Google Wallet, notifications, fitness features, Play Store availability and firmware updates have separate support requirements.
Replacement makes sense when Assistant is essential
- The watch is stuck on Wear OS 2.x and voice control is central to your routine.
- It no longer receives meaningful updates or key apps have stopped working.
- Battery degradation, sluggish performance and connection failures are appearing together.
- You specifically want Gemini or newer health and Wear OS capabilities.
Current upgrade paths
| Option | Best fit | Known pricing or qualification | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel Watch 4 | Pixel owners and readers wanting Google’s most direct Gemini integration. | Google’s US store listed the 41mm configuration at $349.99 and the 45mm at $399.99 when observed; prices and promotions can change. | LTE, carrier terms and any post-trial health subscription add cost. |
| Samsung Galaxy Watch8 | Samsung-phone owners who prefer Samsung hardware and One UI Watch. | Samsung’s June 2026 US MSRP sheet listed $349.99 for 40mm Bluetooth and $379.99 for 44mm Bluetooth; LTE and Classic versions cost more. | Some functions are more compelling inside Samsung’s ecosystem; LTE may require a carrier plan. |
| Another current Wear OS model | Readers prioritizing battery, ruggedness, design or price from brands such as OnePlus, Mobvoi, Xiaomi, OPPO, TAG Heuer or Montblanc. | Support and availability vary by exact model; verify them before purchase on the Wear OS device page and manufacturer site. | Brand, region, phone and account restrictions can change assistant access. |
Google’s Pixel Watch 4 page also advertises smartwatch trade-in credits. Treat LTE promotions, protection plans and subscription trials as optional costs and recheck their terms at checkout. A discounted previous-generation watch is worthwhile only after confirming its Gemini or Assistant eligibility and remaining update horizon.

TechRadar reported that a broader Android and Wear OS shutdown could begin September 4, 2026, citing user emails and 9to5Google. Buying advice in one decision
- Wear OS 2.x and Assistant is essential: plan a replacement rather than spending time on resets or sideloads.
- Wear OS 2.x but basic functions are enough: keep using it while battery, security and apps remain acceptable.
- Wear OS 3.x with a sudden failure: update, reconnect and verify model, region and account eligibility before shopping.
- Eligible Wear OS 4.x or later: check for Gemini first; you may not need new hardware.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a factory reset restore Assistant on Wear OS 2?
No. A reset erases data and setup but does not change the watch’s unsupported Wear OS generation.
Does losing Assistant disable Google Wallet or notifications?
Not automatically. Assistant, Wallet, notifications, health services and firmware updates have separate compatibility rules.
Is Gemini available on every Wear OS 4 watch?
No. Google describes Gemini support as available on select Wear OS 4.0-or-later watches, with model, phone, region, language and account requirements.
Should I buy an older discounted Wear OS watch?
Only after checking its exact installed or upgradeable Wear OS version, assistant eligibility and expected software-support horizon.

The Bottom Line
Check the version before you spend money: Wear OS 2.x has already lost official Google Assistant support, while select newer watches are moving to Gemini. Keep an old watch if its other functions remain reliable; replace it when voice assistance, updates or battery health are important enough to justify the cost.
