OnePlus Explains Why Its First Watch Didn’t Use Wear OS

OnePlus prioritized long battery life over Wear OS breadth in its first watch. Learn what RTOS delivered, which smartwatch features were missing, and how the Watch 2, 2R and 3 changed the equation.

OnePlus chose a lightweight real-time operating-system (RTOS) approach for its first smartwatch because it believed Wear OS would deliver too little battery life. In a March 2021 product Q&A, the company said its research found that single-day endurance discouraged people from continuing to wear smartwatches. The trade-off was deliberate: up to 14 days of claimed typical battery life in exchange for a much narrower software experience than Wear OS.

What OnePlus actually said in 2021

OnePlus described Wear OS and RTOS as platforms with different strengths and weaknesses. Its stated priority was endurance, not a specific saving on licensing or hardware. The company said its research indicated that many people stopped using smartwatches when they had to charge them every day, so it selected RTOS to improve the overall ownership experience.

The explanation came from a OnePlus product-manager Q&A reported in March 2021, before the watch went on sale. OnePlus did not publish a detailed accounting of how cost, engineering effort, Google platform requirements or product positioning affected the decision. Those factors may be reasonable industry hypotheses, but they were not confirmed as the reason. The contemporary account is available at Droid Life.

RTOS versus Wear OS: the practical difference

RTOS is a category of lightweight, purpose-built embedded operating systems designed for predictable operation and low power consumption; it is not one universal operating system. In the OnePlus Watch, that approach supported core watch functions without the overhead of a large third-party app platform.

Platform approach What it prioritizes What the owner gives up or gains
Original OnePlus Watch RTOS approach Low power use and simple, predictable operation Long endurance, but no Google Play ecosystem and fewer ways to interact with notifications
Wear OS Apps, Google services and richer interaction More capable smartwatch functions, generally with greater power demands

The distinction is not “smart” versus “not smart.” The original watch could show notifications, track exercise and sleep, make Bluetooth calls and store music. Its limitation was software flexibility and interaction depth.

What the original OnePlus Watch delivered

OnePlus’s specifications page lists the following hardware and capabilities for the original model: OnePlus Watch specifications.

  • Battery: 402 mAh, with up to 14 days of claimed typical-use battery life.
  • GPS: Up to 25 hours of continuous GPS exercise under OnePlus’s stated conditions; positioning supports GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou.
  • Display: 1.39-inch AMOLED panel at 454 × 454 resolution (326 ppi).
  • Size and weight: 46.4 × 46.4 × 10.9 mm and 45 g without the strap.
  • Durability: 5ATM water resistance and IP68 protection.
  • Features: Bluetooth calling, music storage, exercise and sleep tracking, heart-rate monitoring, blood-oxygen monitoring and phone notifications.
  • Compatibility: Android 6.0 or later; no iPhone support. The watch also requires the OnePlus Health app.
  • Storage: 4 GB, with less available after system software.

“Up to 14 days” is a test-profile result, not a promise that every owner will see two weeks. OnePlus’s scenario included notifications, sleep tracking, about 90 minutes of GPS exercise per week, limited Bluetooth calling, limited music playback and a specified number of screen activations. Frequent GPS use, calls, screen use or health monitoring can reduce the runtime.

What Wear OS capabilities were missing

The 2021 account identified several omissions that matter in everyday use:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • No Google Play app ecosystem: You could not install the broad library of Wear OS applications.
  • No Google Assistant: Voice commands and assistant-driven actions were not available as they are on a full Wear OS watch.
  • No full keyboard: Message responses relied on preset replies rather than free-form typing. OnePlus said a later OTA update would allow customization of those presets.
  • Limited notification actions: Notifications could be displayed, but users could not take the unrestricted actions available on Wear OS.
  • No broad Wear OS watch-face catalog: Owners were limited to the software and faces OnePlus supported instead of the larger third-party ecosystem.

That means a message could appear on the wrist without offering the same reply, app launch or two-way interaction options a Wear OS user might expect. The watch was a notification and fitness accessory, not a phone-like extension of Android.

Hardware choices reflected the battery-first design

OnePlus said the watch used three chips: ST32 for the interactive interface and display processing, plus Apollo 3 and Cypress components. The watch was 10.9 mm thick and launched without an always-on display. OnePlus said it was evaluating always-on support and estimated that it could increase power consumption by almost 50%; that figure was the company’s estimate, not an independent measurement. The processor and display discussion is reported by Droid Life.

Was the trade-off reasonable?

There is no single answer because the decision served one type of buyer much better than another.

Who benefited from RTOS

  • People who wanted to charge weekly rather than daily.
  • Users focused on steps, workouts, sleep and basic health trends.
  • Owners who mainly needed glanceable notifications and occasional Bluetooth calls.
  • Android users seeking a lower-maintenance fitness and notification watch.

Who would have preferred Wear OS

  • Anyone who relies on Google Assistant, Maps, Wallet, Calendar or downloadable watch apps.
  • Users who expect rich notification actions or free-form message replies.
  • People who want a large third-party watch-face ecosystem.
  • Buyers expecting deep, phone-like integration from an Android smartwatch.

The fair criticism is not that the RTOS choice was irrational. It is that the product was marketed as a smartwatch while omitting capabilities many Android buyers associate with that term. Long battery life does not compensate equally for every missing function, especially for an app-heavy user.

Important buying checks and edge cases

  • Do not treat 14 days as universal: It reflects OnePlus’s defined typical-use test.
  • Notifications are not notification management: The watch can display messages, but interaction is constrained.
  • Android-only means an automatic no for iPhone owners: iOS is unsupported.
  • OnePlus phone ownership does not add Wear OS features: The watch’s platform limits remain the same on a OnePlus handset.
  • Health features are wellness tools: Heart-rate and blood-oxygen readings should not be treated as medical diagnosis.
  • Platform longevity matters: A closed software platform depends more heavily on the manufacturer’s updates than Wear OS’s wider app ecosystem.

OnePlus later combined Wear OS and RTOS

OnePlus eventually changed the architecture rather than abandoning the battery concern. The OnePlus Watch 2 and Watch 2R use Wear OS alongside a low-power RTOS. The Watch 2 uses a dual-engine design built around a Snapdragon W5 performance chipset and BES2700 low-power chipset; the Watch 2R follows the same general strategy. OnePlus explains the platform and power approach on the Watch 2 page and lists the Watch 2R’s Wear OS and test conditions at oneplus.com/us/oneplus-watch-2r.

  • All-Day Health & Smart Connectivity: Track sleep stages (deep, light, REM), SpO2, 24/7 heart rate, wrist temperature, and menstrual cycle. Fall detection adds safety. Plus, Cross-OS Dual-Phone Pairing lets you connect two phones simultaneously—Android or iPhone.

The Watch 3 continues with Wear OS 5 plus RTOS. OnePlus claims up to five days in smart mode, up to three days with heavy use and up to 16 days in power-saver mode, each figure based on different test conditions. Its specifications are at oneplus.com/us/oneplus-watch-3/specs, and the product page is at oneplus.com/us/oneplus-watch-3. These numbers should not be compared directly with the original watch’s 14-day claim without considering the mode and test profile.

For readers considering current OnePlus hardware, the later models are the logical direction if Google Play apps, Assistant, Maps, Wallet and richer notifications matter. Check the phone, Google Mobile Services and regional requirements before buying. The original watch’s US page may still display a $159 price signal, but that is not evidence of current stock or availability: OnePlus Watch US page. A current Watch 4 page is also available at oneplus.com/global/oneplus-watch-4; the retrieved specifications require the OHealth app and an Android 9.0-or-later phone with the stated Google Mobile Services version, and do not support iOS or Android Go.

Final verdict

OnePlus’s explanation was credible as a product strategy: it chose RTOS because it believed single-day Wear OS battery life discouraged smartwatch use. The result delivered unusually long claimed endurance and a competent set of fitness, calling and notification basics, but it also removed Google’s app ecosystem, Assistant, full replies, rich notification actions and broad watch-face choice. The later Watch 2, Watch 2R and Watch 3 show that the original limitation was not a permanent technical necessity. OnePlus eventually used Wear OS and a low-power companion system to pursue both deeper smartwatch functions and multi-day battery life.
