What is the Captain Willard SPB153?
Seiko’s official name for the SPB153 is the 1970 Heritage Diver’s Watch, in the Prospex Sea line. “Captain Willard” is the familiar nickname, not the name Seiko uses on its product page. Seiko’s UK page identifies the model as SPB153; its URL uses the reference SPB153J1. Seiko’s SPB153 product page
The nickname points to the watch’s recognizable case shape and to its place in the lineage of Seiko dive-watch designs. The appeal is not simply that it looks old-fashioned: its broad, asymmetrical case and protected crown make it visually unlike the familiar round, evenly balanced diver.
Why its design stands out
An asymmetrical case with a purpose
The case curves around the crown at four o’clock, giving the watch its distinctive profile while helping shield the crown from knocks. That detail makes the SPB153 more than a standard vintage-style diver with a different dial or bezel. The silhouette is immediately identifiable, and the crown placement is part of the design logic rather than decoration alone.
A link to Seiko’s diver history, with an important distinction
Seiko’s 2017 history of its 1965 diver says that watch was used by the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition from 1966 to 1969. That is useful context for Seiko’s wider dive-watch heritage, but it is not evidence that the SPB153 itself was used on an expedition. Seiko’s history of the 1965 diver

There is also a similarly styled anniversary watch that can cause confusion. Seiko’s 55th-anniversary page identifies the SPB183J1 as the “1970 Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation,” a limited edition of 5,500 available in November 2020. Those edition and launch details belong to SPB183J1, not the SPB153.

These are specifications published by Seiko, not independent test results. The dimensions give a more useful starting point for judging fit than the diameter alone: at 42.7 mm across and 46.6 mm lug-to-lug, it has a substantial presence, while the 20 mm lug spacing provides a standard reference for checking alternative straps. Individual fit still depends on wrist shape and preference.

Is the SPB153 the coolest Seiko of 2020?
As an opinion, yes: it is a compelling choice if “cool” means a watch with an unmistakable shape, a legible connection to a real design lineage, and modern practical equipment. The SPB153’s case does much of the work. The four-o’clock crown and asymmetry distinguish it at a glance, while the sapphire crystal, luminous elements and long stated reserve help it function as a contemporary watch rather than a costume piece.
That is not an objective award or a claim that it beats every Seiko released in 2020. A fair comparison would need to weigh fit, design, movement, crystal, water-resistance specification, strap or bracelet and market-specific price across the relevant alternatives; no comprehensive comparison establishes a universal winner.

Buying or owning the SPB153
Seiko’s UK product page displayed a price of GBP 1,050.00 when accessed on 4 October 2026. That is a UK-market listing at that access time, not a guaranteed current or worldwide price. Check the live listing for the market in which you plan to buy, and confirm that the reference is SPB153/SPB153J1 rather than the distinct SPB183J1 anniversary model.
The official 20 mm lug-spacing specification can help when looking for replacement straps, but check compatibility with the particular strap and watch configuration before purchase. If evaluating the watch as a diver, treat Seiko’s 200 m diver’s-water-resistance specification as the manufacturer’s stated rating; the figures here do not represent independent water-resistance testing.
