The Patek Philippe Calatrava 6196P updates the classic 96-lineage dress watch without changing its time-only character: it pairs a 38 mm platinum case and restrained dial with a new hand-wound movement and a display caseback. In his 9 April 2025 hands-on review, Brice Goulard of MONOCHROME Watches sees it as an evolution of the formula, praising its proportions and revised small-seconds position while questioning the strap and some dial details.
Why the Calatrava 6196P matters
The reference 96 established the visual language at the heart of the Calatrava: a simple round case, integrated lugs and a dial organized around function rather than ornament. MONOCHROME’s account describes the 6196P as a return to that classic lineage in a new generation, following the discontinuation of the 5196 in 2022. Its significance is less a dramatic redesign than a careful update of scale, mechanics and what can be seen through the back.
That interpretation of the historical lineage comes from Goulard’s review; it is not an independently verified archival history. The 6196P retains the traditional, time-only layout while giving the movement more room and adding a sapphire display back.
What changed from the 5196?
MONOCHROME reports that the 6196P is 1 mm wider and 1.33 mm thicker than the 5196. The new reference also has a sapphire caseback, where the 5196’s movement was not displayed. Goulard argues that the larger movement improves the small-seconds subdial’s position, which he felt sat too high on the predecessor.

Case, dial and wearing character
The review describes a 950-platinum case measuring 38 mm across and 9.33 mm thick. It has a flat coin-edge bezel, integrated lugs, sapphire crystal and sapphire display back; a diamond is set between the lugs at six o’clock. Water resistance is reported as 30 metres.
The rose-gilt opaline dial is paired with anthracite white-gold obus-style hour markers, dauphine-style hands and small seconds. Goulard finds the salmon-toned appearance and overall restraint successful, and says the watch remains elegant on the wrist. His positive judgment is a personal assessment, not a measured or universal verdict.

Calibre 30-255 PS: the new movement
MONOCHROME reports that the 6196P uses the hand-wound calibre 30-255 PS, a movement measuring 31 mm in diameter and 2.55 mm thick. The review lists two barrels, a 65-hour power reserve, stop seconds and a regulation specification of -3/+2 seconds per day.

Strap and dial details: where the reviewer disagrees
The supplied strap is described as shiny chocolate-brown alligator leather, finished with a platinum pin buckle and quick-release spring bars. Goulard considers the glossy brown strap outdated and would rather see a lightly textured mid-grey calfskin strap. That is his styling preference, not a claim that another strap is included or guaranteed to fit; the review does not state the strap width.
He also notes that anthracite hands and markers can stand out more than traditional rhodium-plated dial furniture. Frank Geelen, another editorial voice cited in the article, would have preferred rhodium-plated elements. These are subjective design preferences: the review does not present them as a functional defect.

What did the Calatrava 6196P cost at launch?
MONOCHROME reported Patek Philippe launch retail prices of EUR 46,800, USD 47,135 and CHF 40,000 in its 2025 article. These are historical launch figures as reported on 9 April 2025, not verified current prices. The available information does not establish the watch’s current collection status, stock, authorized-retailer quotation or marketplace availability as of 4 October 2026; prospective buyers should confirm present pricing and availability with Patek Philippe or an authorized retailer.
Who is the 6196P for?
The 6196P is aimed at someone who wants a traditional Patek Philippe dress watch with small seconds, a platinum case and a hand-wound movement, but also values a contemporary case scale and a view of the mechanics. Its appeal lies in continuity rather than novelty: the familiar round, restrained design remains intact while the case, movement and caseback are updated.

Goulard’s overall view is enthusiastic about the proportions, traditional case and revised movement, but the reported launch price is a substantial consideration for a time-only watch, even in platinum. Whether the strap’s gloss or the anthracite dial furniture suits a buyer is a matter of taste; the review’s reservations are useful precisely because they concern the watch’s visible character, not a claim of poor execution.
