The strongest evidence for value is its design significance and documented auction demand—not a single old sale price treated as a current market quote.
What the Nautilus 5980/1A is
Patek Philippe introduced the stainless-steel Nautilus ref. 5980/1A in 2006, during the model’s 30th-anniversary period alongside the 5711 and 5712. It added a chronograph to the Nautilus range and was identified by auction catalogues as Patek Philippe’s first automatic chronograph. Patek’s launch material described it as completing the Nautilus family, while Sotheby’s called it the first Nautilus with a chronograph complication.
The reference combines a stainless-steel case, an integrated stainless-steel bracelet and a self-winding flyback chronograph. Its date aperture sits at 3 o’clock, and elapsed time is displayed by a central chronograph hand and a single subdial that combines 60-minute and 12-hour scales.
Case, bracelet and wrist presence
Why the diameter is reported as 44 mm or 43.5 mm
Patek Philippe’s 2006 launch document specifies a 44 mm case. Phillips measured a 2006 example at 43.5 mm in its catalogue. Those figures are not necessarily contradictory: published dimensions can differ according to whether a measurement includes particular case surfaces, bezel edges or the measuring convention used by the catalogue. When comparing listings, ask the seller how the diameter was measured rather than treating either number as universally definitive.

Integrated steel construction
The bracelet is part of the watch’s visual and ergonomic identity rather than a detachable strap-style accessory. Its outer links are satin-finished and its middle links polished, creating the alternating surfaces associated with this steel Nautilus configuration. Bracelet stretch, deep scratches, over-polishing and mismatched replacement links can materially affect both wearability and value.
Do not import specifications from another 5980
Patek Philippe’s current 5980/60G family page lists a 40.5 mm case, 12.2 mm thickness, 30 m water resistance and a 45–55 hour power reserve for a white-gold variant. Those figures should not be silently applied to the discontinued steel 5980/1A. The launch and auction records cited for the steel reference establish its diameter, but do not establish a steel-model thickness, water-resistance rating or power-reserve figure in the same way.

The CH 28-520 C movement
Core architecture
The 5980/1A uses Patek Philippe’s self-winding CH 28-520 C. It has a vertical clutch, flyback chronograph operation, a central chronograph hand, an instant-change date and the combined 60-minute/12-hour monocounter. Phillips records 35 jewels for the movement.
What that means in use
- Central chronograph hand: elapsed seconds are read from the prominent hand in the centre of the dial.
- Monocounter: minutes and hours are consolidated into one subdial, keeping the dial less crowded than a conventional three-register chronograph.
- Flyback: while the chronograph is running, a reset-and-restart action allows a new timing interval without requiring separate stop, reset and restart operations.
- Vertical clutch: the chronograph is designed around a coupling system intended to engage the timing mechanism cleanly.
- Instant-change date: the date display is designed to change in a rapid jump rather than advancing gradually over many hours.
The result is a movement built for timing as well as everyday automatic wear, while retaining the compact, unified dial layout that distinguishes the 5980 from more traditional multi-register chronographs.

5980/1A versus 5990/1A
The practical distinction is complication choice. The 5980/1A is a chronograph-focused Nautilus. The later 5990/1A belongs to the Nautilus chronograph family but adds travel-time functions. That makes the choice less about which reference is universally better and more about whether you want a simpler timing watch or a more function-dense travel watch.

Do not compare asking prices without normalising reference suffix, metal, dial configuration, completeness and service condition. A steel 5980/1A and another Nautilus chronograph may look similar in photographs while representing different specifications and market segments.

What the documented market evidence actually shows
Phillips catalogued a 2006 stainless-steel 5980/1A with its certificate, hangtag, setting pin, literature and bracelet. The presale estimate was CHF25,000–45,000, and the lot sold for CHF119,700. That is a historical auction result for one documented example, not a current price guide or a guaranteed resale value.
Sotheby’s catalogued a 5980/1A-001 as a stainless-steel automatic flyback chronograph with date and bracelet. The suffix matters: dial details, date-disc configuration and supplied accessories can distinguish otherwise similar-looking examples. Auction results also reflect the venue, buyer competition, timing and the condition and completeness of that particular lot; dealer asking prices are not equivalent evidence.

How to assess a 5980/1A before buying
- Confirm the exact reference. Match the caseback, paperwork and listing to 5980/1A or the relevant suffix, rather than relying on the seller’s headline.
- Inspect the dial and date disc. Check that the dial layout, typography, colour and date-disc configuration are original and consistent with the reference.
- Examine case geometry. Look for softened bezel edges, uneven brushing, excessive polishing, dents and evidence of case replacement.
- Check the integrated bracelet. Assess link stretch, clasp wear, correct finishing, missing links and whether the bracelet belongs to the watch.
- Request service documentation. A dated invoice or authorised-service record is more useful than an unsupported statement that the watch was “recently serviced.”
- Reconcile serials and paperwork. Compare movement and case serial information, certificate details, accessories and the seller’s ownership history.
- Use independent authentication. For a high-value purchase, have the watch examined by Patek Philippe or a qualified independent specialist before funds become non-refundable.
- Compare like with like. Evaluate auction results and dealer offers only after adjusting for condition, provenance, completeness, reference suffix and originality.
Is the Patek Philippe 5980/1A worth buying?
It is a compelling purchase if you want the first-generation Nautilus chronograph design, prefer stainless steel and value a flyback chronograph without the additional travel-time layer of later models. Its historical position, integrated bracelet and CH 28-520 C make it more than a simple luxury sports watch.
It is a poor purchase if the example has uncertain provenance, a heavily polished case, a stretched or incorrect bracelet, a non-original dial, unexplained serial discrepancies or no credible service history. The old CHF119,700 Phillips result should not be used to justify any current asking price without matching the same level of condition and completeness.
For most buyers, the correct order is identification first, condition and originality second, service history third, and price comparison last. That sequence is more reliable than choosing a 5980/1A from photographs or anchoring on a single auction headline.
