The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 has a genuine connection to the Porsche 911: Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche designed both, and the original watch appeared in 1972 with a dashboard-inspired dial. For a current-model review, the key distinction is which Chronograph 1 you mean. Porsche Design’s April 2026 All Titanium Numbered Edition is a different watch from the limited 1972 and 1975 reissues. Its published specifications are appealing, but they are manufacturer claims—not the results of independent wear or accuracy testing.
What is the Porsche Design Chronograph 1?
It is a mechanical chronograph whose design story begins with Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, known as F. A. Porsche. After creating the Porsche 911 in 1963, he designed the original Chronograph I, introduced in 1972. Porsche Design says the watch’s dial drew inspiration from the 911 dashboard, and describes it as the world’s first fully black timepiece. That “first” is the company’s historical claim.
The original’s all-black appearance was a departure from the prevailing look of watches at the time. The connection to the 911 is therefore more specific than a shared designer’s name: the dial design was intended to carry a piece of the car’s instrument-panel language onto the wrist.
This is a source-based review of the current All Titanium Numbered Edition using Porsche Design’s published information. It is not a hands-on assessment of comfort, timekeeping, finishing, durability, or service experience.

What does the WERK 01.400 add?
The WERK 01.400 is an automatic chronograph movement with a day-date display, 25 jewels, COSC certification, and a stated 48-hour power reserve. Porsche Design lists no flyback function for this movement in the All Titanium edition specifications. That is a practical difference from the 1975 Limited Edition’s WERK 01.240, for which Porsche Design specifically lists flyback.
COSC certification is the movement’s stated certification; it does not establish how a particular example performs on the wrist over time. No independent accuracy measurements or movement inspection are available here.

How does the current watch relate to the original 1972 Chronograph I?
The link is design lineage, not identical construction. The original was an all-black watch designed by F. A. Porsche in 1972 with a dial inspired by the 911 dashboard. The All Titanium Numbered Edition instead presents the design in glass-bead-blasted titanium, with a visible movement through its sapphire case back and current WERK 01.400 mechanics.
The 2022 1972 Limited Edition was the explicitly limited, 500-piece re-creation of the historic look, using titanium and WERK 01.140. The 2025 1975 Limited Edition commemorated a later uncoated stainless-steel evolution, translating that finish into titanium and adding the flyback WERK 01.240. Porsche Design presents the All Titanium as a numbered collection edition, rather than a one-off anniversary run.

Is the Porsche Design Chronograph 1 worth it?
Whether it is worth the asking price depends on what you value: Porsche Design’s specific design history, a titanium chronograph with a display back, or a particular movement function. The published information supports the watch’s heritage and specification story, but cannot settle questions of wrist comfort, real-world accuracy, finishing quality, long-term service costs, or value against competing watches. Those would require independent inspection or ownership experience.
- It may suit you if you want the 911 designer’s watch lineage, prefer the uncoated titanium finish, and value a COSC-certified automatic chronograph with day-date and a display case back.
- Compare the 1975 edition if flyback function or its historical reference matters more; Porsche Design lists flyback for its WERK 01.240 and a closed case back.
- Consider the All Black if the original fully black aesthetic is the priority. Porsche Design identifies it as a permanent collection model, but black finish and titanium finish are distinct choices.
- Before buying, verify the local price, taxes, availability, warranty and service arrangements directly with Porsche Design or an authorized seller. The published launch price below is euro-denominated and time-specific.
Price and availability
Porsche Design announced an RRP of €7,950 for the All Titanium Numbered Edition, with availability from April 2026 through its official online channel, Porsche Design Stores, participating Porsche Centers, and selected watch retailers. This is the manufacturer’s stated euro launch price, not a confirmed current price or a quote for every market. Local pricing, taxes, inventory, and delivery timing may differ; confirm them with the seller.
Verdict
The Chronograph 1’s strongest case is the clarity of its design provenance: F. A. Porsche created the original after the 911, and Porsche Design ties its dial to the car’s dashboard. The All Titanium Numbered Edition offers a contemporary, technically specified version of that idea, but it should be judged as its own edition—not as a direct replica of the 1972 original or as the flyback-equipped 1975 model. Its published specification is detailed; independent performance and ownership evidence is not established here.
