Review: The Best Android Smartwatches of 2018

The Fossil Q Explorist was the best all-round Android smartwatch of 2018, while the Q Venture suited smaller wrists and Samsung’s Gear Sport led for casual fitness. Here is what each watch did well, where it failed and what changes when buying discontinued hardware in 2026.

This is a historical buying guide to the Android-compatible smartwatch market in 2018—not a recommendation to buy discontinued hardware new in 2026. On the criteria that mattered then, the Fossil Q Explorist offered the best all-round balance of style, notifications, voice features and everyday usability. The smaller Q Venture delivered essentially the same experience for slimmer wrists, while Samsung’s Gear Sport was the better choice for casual fitness and Samsung-phone owners.

Quick verdict

Category 2018 pick Why
Best overall Fossil Q Explorist Conventional styling, sharp round display, responsive Wear OS controls, notifications, quick replies and voice input.
Best for smaller wrists Fossil Q Venture The Explorist proposition in a smaller case, with similar software and screen quality.
Best for fitness Samsung Gear Sport Built-in GPS, heart-rate monitoring, swim tracking, activity reminders and a rotating bezel.
Best battery-focused alternative TicWatch Pro Dual-layer display and a low-power LCD mode, offset by a thick case and slower 2018 hardware.
Best for serious training None of these Their GPS and fitness features were not a substitute for a dedicated sports watch.

The original review listed Indian prices at publication of ₹17,495 for the Fossil Q Explorist, ₹15,995 for the Q Venture and ₹22,990 for the Gear Sport. Those were 2018 prices, not current market values. The contemporary testing and rankings are documented here.

What counted as an Android smartwatch in 2018?

“Android smartwatch” was a compatibility category, not a single operating system. Wear OS was then known as Android Wear and powered the Fossil Q Explorist, Q Venture, TicWatch E, TicWatch Pro, Huawei Watch 2, LG Watch Sport and LG Watch Style. Samsung’s Gear Sport also paired with Android phones but ran Tizen. Fitbit Ionic was primarily a fitness platform with smartwatch features. Apple Watch was excluded because it was designed chiefly for iPhone users.

Android compatibility was never binary. Samsung watches could work with non-Samsung phones, but setup required companion apps and some Samsung-specific integration was unavailable or less seamless. Phone model, Android version, memory, Bluetooth behavior, region and required services all affected the result. Samsung’s current compatibility guidance still lists the Gear Sport as an older model and ties support to particular Android versions and memory requirements; that document is not a promise that every feature remains supported in 2026: Samsung support guidance.

Best overall: Fossil Q Explorist

Why it won

The Explorist was the strongest lifestyle watch for most Android users because it looked like a conventional watch while handling the jobs people actually used daily: phone notifications, quick replies, voice dictation and Google Assistant. Its fully round display was sharp, the controls felt responsive for the generation, and Fossil offered a wide range of cases, colors and interchangeable straps.

That combination mattered more than a specification-sheet advantage. Fossil Group’s 2018 fashion-watch families—including Diesel, Skagen, Kate Spade, Armani Exchange, Movado and Tag Heuer—often shared broadly similar internal hardware, while case design, buttons, materials and styling changed. Treat that as a description of those product families, not a claim about every later model.

Where it worked well

  • Traditional styling suited office and casual wear better than overtly sporty watches.
  • Wear OS provided broad notification handling, quick replies and useful voice input.
  • The round screen and physical controls made routine interaction straightforward.
  • Strap and color choices made it easier to match personal style.
  • Fitness features were adequate for steps and casual activity.

Where it fell short

  • Gesture-heavy navigation and small touch targets could be awkward.
  • Battery use generally meant charging every day.
  • Fitness motivation and tracking were less polished than Samsung’s or Apple’s.
  • Older Wear OS processors could make performance uneven.
  • Google Assistant and dictation were useful but not flawless.

Choose the Explorist if notifications, conversational replies, voice functions and watch-like design matter more than advanced training metrics. Skip it if you need dependable modern software support, serious GPS training or multi-day endurance.

Best for smaller wrists: Fossil Q Venture

The Q Venture was essentially the Explorist idea in a smaller design. Its advantage was fit, not a radically different feature set: readers with slimmer wrists got the same Wear OS notifications, voice functions, display quality and fashion-oriented strap ecosystem in a more comfortable case. The trade-off was fewer physical controls, so buyers should prioritize wrist comfort over small specification differences.

Best for fitness and Samsung phones: Samsung Gear Sport

What it did better

The Gear Sport was the more convincing exercise watch. It combined built-in GPS, heart-rate monitoring, swim tracking, activity reminders and a rotating bezel that made navigation quick while moving. Battery endurance was stronger than the Fossil watches, and Samsung-phone owners benefited from tighter integration. Samsung’s specification sheet is available at Samsung’s Gear Sport documentation.

The compromises

  • Tizen had a smaller major third-party app ecosystem than Wear OS.
  • S Voice and its dictation were substantially weaker than Google Assistant for anything beyond short replies.
  • Non-Samsung Android setup involved multiple apps and could lose Samsung-specific conveniences.
  • The sporty design was less suitable as a dress watch.
  • GPS results were not reliable enough for competitive pace or distance training. The contemporary review found it unsuitable for that use, so treat its exercise tools as general wellness features rather than medical or race-grade measurements.

Buy the Gear Sport in the 2018 context if activity reminders, swimming, GPS and battery life outrank app breadth and voice interaction. It was a fitness-oriented smartwatch, not a dedicated running computer.

The competition

TicWatch Pro

The original TicWatch Pro’s dual-layer display was its defining idea: a conventional screen for Wear OS and a low-power LCD-style layer for longer endurance. It included GPS and heart-rate features, and later generations added variants such as LTE, but those later products are not the 2018 model. The first Pro was large, thick and slower than the best alternatives because of its older processor. Its low-power mode helped, but did not erase the bulk or software compromises.

TicWatch E

The TicWatch E offered GPS, heart-rate monitoring and an ambient-light-adjusting display at a simpler price point. Its plastic, toy-like construction, older processor and lack of a convenient rotating control made it less appealing as newer hardware arrived.

Huawei Watch 2

Huawei’s Watch 2 added GPS and Android Wear 2.0, but its thick body, raised bezel and slower performance made edge gestures and precise taps difficult. The bezel did not rotate and there was no rotating crown, reducing its value at its price.

Rank #4

  • A PERSONAL ASSISTANT, RIGHT ON YOUR WRIST: Your Watch just became your personal assistant.⁴ Stay one step ahead of your day with a watch that helps you navigate your tasks and to-do lists.

LG Watch Sport

The Watch Sport packed GPS, LTE, calls, texting, a speaker, heart-rate monitoring and several controls into one device. That feature list came with a thick, heavy-looking case that was less comfortable for everyday wear.

LG Watch Style

The Style was thinner and more comfortable than the Sport, but gave up advanced features and had a less compelling design. Some colors and configurations were also difficult to find.

Fitbit Ionic

The Ionic offered better battery endurance and useful GPS exercise tracking for Fitbit users. It was weaker as a general smartwatch: notification interaction, replies, syncing and setup were less convenient. Think of it as a fitness tracker with smartwatch functions, not the best Android smartwatch overall.

How to choose among the 2018 models

  1. Want a traditional watch? Choose the Fossil Q Explorist.
  2. Need a smaller case? Choose the Fossil Q Venture.
  3. Prioritize exercise reminders, swimming and battery life? Choose the Samsung Gear Sport, especially with a Samsung phone.
  4. Want to experiment with longer endurance? Consider the TicWatch Pro if its thickness and slower interaction are acceptable.
  5. Need serious running, cycling or endurance metrics? Choose a dedicated GPS sports watch instead of any model in this 2018 group.

What changes when buying in 2026?

These are discontinued 2018-era products. A used or refurbished example may have a degraded battery, a missing proprietary charger, delisted companion software, no current security updates or unreliable water resistance after years of wear. LTE versions may also depend on carrier support and a qualifying plan. Those are practical age-related risks, not published failure rates.

Compatibility must be checked against the exact phone and Android version before purchase. A watch that once paired successfully may now have an unavailable app or a feature that depends on an older Google or Samsung service. For a new purchase, start with the current Wear OS ecosystem—Google’s official directory now centers on newer Pixel Watch, Galaxy Watch, Mobvoi, OnePlus, Xiaomi, OPPO, TAG Heuer and Montblanc devices: Google Wear OS. Do not confuse the original TicWatch Pro with later Pro 4G/LTE or Pro 5 generations; their specifications and platforms differ (Mobvoi comparison, Pro 4G/LTE, Pro 5).

Final verdict

For the 2018 Android market, Fossil offered the best balance: the Q Explorist for most wrists and the Q Venture for smaller ones. Samsung’s Gear Sport was the better fitness-oriented choice and a particularly natural fit for Samsung-phone owners. Wear OS remained the more attractive platform for apps, voice functions and general smartwatch use, but none of these watches should be treated as a straightforward 2026 purchase without checking battery health, charger availability, phone compatibility and software support.
