Announced on September 25, 2024 (published globally the next day), it broadens the toolkit—but it is not one unrestricted API for every watch, health metric, or app. Access and compatibility still depend on the SDK, device, permissions, region, and Samsung’s current terms.
What Samsung announced
Samsung introduced an expanded Samsung Health SDK Suite for developers, partners, and researchers. Its four components address different jobs rather than providing interchangeable ways to retrieve the same data: the Sensor SDK, Data SDK, Accessory SDK, and Research Stack. Samsung said the Data SDK began becoming available from October 2024; that announcement does not establish that every developer received general self-service access at that time. For current eligibility, supported devices, and release details, consult the Samsung Health developer portal.
Samsung’s announcement describes a broader set of development tools, not independently measured gains in development speed or clinical outcomes. The practical question is which route matches an app’s data needs and what access Samsung currently permits.
Sensor SDK or Data SDK?
The central choice is between working closer to watch sensor capabilities and consuming higher-level health records integrated by Samsung Health.

| Question | Sensor SDK | Data SDK |
|---|---|---|
| Main source | Selected Galaxy Watch BioActive Sensor capabilities and related signals, as exposed by Samsung | Integrated health information in Samsung Health, potentially originating from Galaxy Watches, Galaxy Rings, smartphones, and third-party devices |
| Abstraction | Closer to sensor and algorithm capabilities | Higher-level records and processed or analyzed information |
| Examples Samsung lists | Heart rate, skin temperature, ECG-related signals, BIA, and PPG infrared and red-LED data; Samsung also describes blood-oxygen- and body-composition-related applications | Sleep, exercise, blood pressure, food intake, and blood glucose |
| Best suited to | Products whose features depend on specific Galaxy Watch signals | Dashboards, coaching, or longitudinal services that need Samsung Health’s combined history |
| Key trade-off | Device, firmware, region, permission, and SDK exposure can constrain what is available | Less control over raw measurements, sampling, provenance, and Samsung’s processing |
Sensor SDK: watch-specific capabilities
Samsung says the Sensor SDK exposes information associated with the BioActive Sensor, including heart-rate, skin-temperature, ECG-related, BIA, and PPG-related capabilities. The announcement also describes expanded BIA measurements, including “magnitude” and “degree,” alongside existing body-composition indicators. These are stated capabilities, not a promise that each Galaxy Watch model exposes every metric to every third-party app.
A reading or feature available in Samsung Health does not automatically mean an app can obtain the same signal. Confirm model, firmware, regional availability, permissions, and current SDK support in Samsung’s documentation before designing around a metric.
Data SDK: Samsung Health’s integrated records
The Data SDK is aimed at developers who need information already integrated into Samsung Health rather than a pipeline for every individual device. Samsung says the data may come from Galaxy Watches, Galaxy Rings, smartphones, and third-party devices, and lists sleep, exercise, blood pressure, food intake, and blood glucose as examples.

This higher-level route can reduce device-specific ingestion and normalization work. The trade-off is that an app may have less control over raw measurements, algorithmic transformations, sampling frequency, and conflicts among sources. If a product depends on reproducing a calculation or interpreting a sensor signal, verify that the required detail is actually exposed.

Accessory SDK: compatible external devices
The Accessory SDK is intended to bring compatible external health and fitness devices into Samsung Health. Samsung’s examples include blood-pressure monitors, bike sensors, heart-rate monitors, and glucose monitors. That can give a service a more unified set of inputs, but “compatible” matters: the announcement does not promise support for every accessory or model. Check Samsung’s current compatibility list and integration requirements before making a device a product dependency.
Research Stack: study operations, not just sensor access
Samsung describes Research Stack as an open-source research environment with mobile and wearable app SDKs, backend services, a web portal, recruitment workflows, surveys, progress tracking, and results monitoring. Those pieces may suit remote monitoring, sleep or activity studies, longitudinal wellness research, and patient-reported outcomes where participation and adherence matter alongside data collection.

Open source does not mean turnkey hosted service or maintenance-free deployment. Research teams still need to plan for hosting, security, consent, data governance, study protocols, and institutional review. Samsung’s 2024 announcement said a Research Stack 2.0 integrating the Sensor SDK and Data SDK was forthcoming; the announcement alone does not establish that this integration is now available. Check the live portal for current release documentation.
Samsung’s tools versus Android’s broader health routes
Samsung’s SDKs are relevant when an app needs Samsung-specific capabilities or Samsung Health’s data. For interoperability across participating Android health apps and devices, Google’s Health Connect is often the more appropriate starting point. Health Connect provides permission-controlled sharing for supported records and supports Android SDK 28 and higher. Its documented categories include heart rate, steps, sleep sessions, skin temperature, exercise routes, mindfulness, and basic medical records in FHIR format. Those medical records do not turn it into a complete electronic-health-record system or authorize a medical device. Google’s documentation lists Jetpack Library 1.1.0 as stable and was last updated February 3, 2026. See Health Connect documentation.
For apps running on Wear OS that need watch-native workout or sensor experiences, Google recommends Wear OS Health Services, designed for power-efficient access. Samsung-specific sensor access and broad Android data exchange solve different problems; an app may need one route or a combination. Android’s Health & Fitness Developer Center outlines these platform options.

Do not start a new integration with Android’s older Health Platform API V1: Google marks it deprecated and says it has been replaced by Health Connect. Older tutorials may still appear in search results. The legacy documentation’s HealthDataClient example and device limitations describe that deprecated route, not current Samsung SDK guidance. See Google’s Health Platform API documentation.

Eligibility, compatibility, and permissions
Samsung’s announcement says the suite was made accessible to an expanded range of developers, partners, and researchers; it does not prove that every component is unrestricted or self-service. Before committing to an architecture, establish whether registration or Samsung approval is required, which devices and operating systems are supported, and whether the intended commercial, research, or clinical use is permitted. Request only the data permissions the feature needs, and design for users who deny access or revoke it later.
Missing, stale, or conflicting records
An absent record is not a zero and not evidence of a normal result. It may reflect a watch not being worn, poor sensor contact, a measurement that was never started, a sync delay, denied permission, or a metric unavailable on that device or in that region. Apps should handle empty and partial histories without silently inventing values.

When records arrive from several devices, readings may disagree. Define how the app handles source identity, timestamp, measurement method, data quality, manual entries, and user-selected device priorities. Preserve provenance and relevant timestamps so users and clinicians can tell where a value came from.
Battery, privacy, validation, and medical claims
Continuous sensing and background synchronization can use battery and may be constrained by the watch or phone operating system. Request only the sampling frequency and background behavior the feature actually needs. Protect health data with appropriate security and retention controls, and account for applicable privacy, consent, and app-distribution requirements.
An SDK does not itself validate a measurement for diagnosis or authorize a clinical service. A product used for clinical decision support, treatment, or patient care may trigger separate regulatory, privacy, cybersecurity, clinical-validation, and professional-liability obligations, which vary by jurisdiction and intended use. Treat wellness features and regulated medical products as different product categories. Regional clearance and availability can also affect ECG, blood pressure, blood oxygen, body-composition, and other health features.
Finally, Samsung-derived metrics can change with firmware, Samsung Health algorithms, or SDK versions. For longitudinal services, retain enough device, app, and SDK version information to interpret historical data; do not assume an algorithm’s output remains identical over time.
Quick Recap
A practical decision path for a new app
- Define the data need. Decide whether the feature needs a Samsung-specific watch signal, Samsung Health’s integrated history, a compatible external accessory, a study workflow, or cross-app Android records.
- Check access and coverage. Use the Samsung Health developer portal to verify eligibility, SDK release status, supported devices, and required permissions. Do not assume an announcement-era feature is currently open to every developer.
- Choose the platform route. Evaluate Health Connect for cross-app Android sharing and Wear OS Health Services for watch-native workout or sensor functionality; use Samsung tools where their Samsung-specific coverage is necessary.
- Design for incomplete data. Handle denied or revoked permission, unsupported metrics, delayed synchronization, missing records, duplicate entries, and conflicting sources.
- Preserve provenance and validate outputs. Label source and time assumptions, test the service independently for its intended use, and complete relevant privacy, security, regulatory, and clinical reviews before making health claims.
