The Breguet Type XX 3800ST is a 1995-era revival, not one of the French military Type 20 watches from the 1950s. Its automatic winding, flyback chronograph, approximately 40-hour power reserve and conditional 10-bar water-resistance rating are documented in Breguet’s instructions for the reference. Those are reference-level specifications; the condition of any surviving example has to be assessed on its own.
Where the 3800ST fits in Type XX history
Breguet’s archival terminology distinguishes military Type 20 watches from civilian Type XX watches. In the early 1950s, the company designed a military chronograph to French Ministry of Defense requirements. Breguet says the model was approved in 1954 and that a French Air Ministry order for 1,100 military Type 20 watches was delivered from 1955 through 1959. The brand also recounts deliveries to the Flight Test Center and Naval Air Force. The figure of 1,100 is the size of that order, not total production of Type XX watches. Breguet’s account of Type XX production explains that these military watches remained French state property and were issued to pilots as equipment.
The civilian 3800 belongs to a later chapter. Swatch Group’s 2023 corporate archive dates the third-generation return to 1995, when Breguet introduced the reference 3800 Aéronavale without a date. The date-equipped 3820 Transatlantique followed. This generation retained the black dial, rotating bezel and flyback function of the aviation chronograph line while adopting automatic winding. Swatch Group’s Type XX history places the 3800 in that revival, rather than among the original military-issued watches.
The lineage is real, but the 3800 should not be assigned the earlier watches’ movement specifications. Breguet’s history of the first generation describes Valjoux 22-based calibres 222 and 225, with an approximately 35-hour reserve, and notes a move to modernized Valjoux calibres in 1963. Those details belong to earlier Type XX movements, not the 3800. Breguet’s first-generation history provides that separate account.

What the 3800’s flyback does
The flyback function lets the wearer time consecutive intervals without stopping, resetting and then restarting the chronograph in separate operations. Breguet describes it this way: “The flyback function allows for the chronograph function to be reset to zero by simply pressing the lower pushbutton, simplifying the pilot or team members’ operations and offering the possibility of recording several consecutive times.” The explanation appears in Breguet’s Type XX history.
On the 3800, the lower pusher resets the chronograph and counters. In flyback use, releasing that pusher immediately starts timing again from zero. The function is rooted in the practical timing needs of aviation, but the key point for an owner is straightforward: it is a restart-from-zero operation, not merely a conventional stop-and-reset sequence.

Documented 3800 specifications and operation
Breguet’s official 3800 instruction manual identifies the watch as an automatic Type XX Aéronavale flyback chronograph. It says the movement can also be wound manually at the crown and gives an approximate 40-hour reserve when the watch is unworn.

The 39 mm case figure comes from secondary reporting, not the official manual: Professional Watches’ history and review describes that case size and reports that calibre 582 is based on Lemania calibre 1350 with a flyback module. Treat those construction details as the publication’s reporting; they are not confirmed by the manual.

3800 Aéronavale or 3820 Transatlantique?
The clearest documented distinction between these third-generation references is the date display: the 3800 Aéronavale was introduced without a date, while the 3820 Transatlantique followed with one. The archive establishes that distinction at the reference level; it does not establish that every example has identical details or that parts and configurations are interchangeable.

What a buyer should verify on a pre-owned 3800ST
A manual’s water-resistance rating describes the reference under its stated condition, not the present condition of an older individual watch. Since Breguet’s 10-bar figure requires the crown to be screwed down, ask for a recent water-resistance test if the rating matters to your intended use. Do not assume an untested watch remains water-resistant because its original specification says so.
