What is different between the Explorer 36 and Explorer 40?
The clearest difference is case diameter: 36 mm for reference 124270 and 40 mm for reference 224270. The larger case gives the Explorer 40 a more prominent look; the Explorer 36 keeps the design more compact. Rolex’s specifications do not establish that either size will fit a particular wrist better, so treat those descriptions as visual guidance, not a fit guarantee.

Which size should you choose?
Choose the Explorer 36 for compact proportions
The 36 mm reference is the natural starting point if you want an Explorer that feels visually restrained and close to the original model’s proportions. It is not a “small wrist only” option: the available evidence does not support a universal wrist-circumference cutoff for choosing it.

Choose the Explorer 40 for a larger dial
The 40 mm reference is the straightforward choice if you prefer a broader dial and more visible presence on the wrist. That does not make it inherently more comfortable or better fitting; comfort depends on the individual wearer and should be judged in person.
Try both rather than guessing from diameter
Case diameter alone cannot settle how a watch will look or feel on you. Compare both on your wrist, with the bracelet adjusted, and decide whether you prefer the more compact presentation or the larger one. The cited specifications are not a comparative wearing test.

What do the two Explorers have in common?
Both current steel references use Rolex caliber 3230 and are rated for approximately 70 hours of power reserve and 100 m / 330 ft water resistance. Each has an Oystersteel case, black time-only dial, and Oyster bracelet. In practical terms, you are choosing the scale and look of the same core Explorer formula rather than paying for a different complication or movement.
Why does the 36 mm size matter in Explorer history?
Rolex says the Explorer launched in 1953 at 36 mm. The case increased to 39 mm in 2010, and the 36 mm size returned in 2021. The Explorer 36 therefore echoes the original diameter, while the current Explorer 40 offers a larger contemporary option. See Rolex’s Explorer model history.

Rolex states that only official Rolex retailers are allowed to sell and maintain its watches. An official retailer is the appropriate place to confirm current regional pricing and availability, get bracelet-fit advice, and try both sizes.
