The prediction was a contemporary rumor, not a confirmed launch plan. Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S25 series instead, while its January news about the wearable concerned new sizes and updates for the original Galaxy Ring.
Why a January 2025 launch seemed plausible
Samsung had introduced its first Galaxy Ring in 2024, adding a new kind of wearable to an ecosystem built around Galaxy phones, Galaxy Watch and Samsung Health. Its next major Unpacked event was scheduled for January 22, 2025, making the occasion a reasonable setting for speculation about a follow-up.
Some contemporary coverage, including Tech Advisor’s Galaxy Ring 2 roundup and TechRadar’s rumor coverage, discussed the possibility. But the distinction matters: the event date was confirmed; a Ring 2 appearance was not. Samsung had not confirmed a successor’s name, specifications, price, release date or launch plan.
Samsung’s event invitation established the January 22 date. It did not establish that a ring would be part of the announcements.

What happened at Galaxy Unpacked on January 22
Samsung held the event in San Jose and announced the Galaxy S25, S25+ and S25 Ultra, with Galaxy AI as a central theme. Neither the S25 launch announcement nor Samsung’s official event highlights announced a Galaxy Ring 2. The expected successor announcement or teaser did not materialize in Samsung’s public event coverage.
The Galaxy Ring news Samsung actually announced
In January 2025, Samsung expanded the original Galaxy Ring rather than launching a second generation. It added sizes 14 and 15, taking the range to sizes 5 through 15. The larger sizes began rolling out from January 22, with timing varying by country; Samsung also planned additional regional availability from February.

Samsung’s announcement also covered expanded Samsung Health sleep-related features, including a sleep-environment report using compatible SmartThings data. The company’s US announcement and global announcement describe these changes. They apply to the original Galaxy Ring: adding sizes and software features did not make it a Ring 2.
What was known about Galaxy Ring 2 specifications?
At the time of the January 2025 rumor, Samsung had not verified any successor specifications. The following were unconfirmed:

Coverage could speculate about improvements, but proposed features were expectations rather than verified product details. An announcement date, even if one had been rumored, would not by itself establish when a product would go on sale.

Samsung launched the original Galaxy Ring globally in July 2024 and positioned it around health and sleep tracking through Samsung Health. The Samsung US product page says it requires a compatible Samsung phone, the Samsung Health app and a Samsung account. Compatibility and feature support can depend on the device and region, so it is a poor fit for iPhone owners and may be limiting for people outside Samsung’s phone ecosystem.

Samsung’s first-quarter 2025 business report lists the original Ring at approximately 7.0 mm wide and 2.6 mm deep, with a weight of about 2.3–3.3 grams depending on size. Those are first-generation specifications, not evidence about a successor.
Should you buy the original Galaxy Ring or wait?
Buy the current Ring if
- You own a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone and want Samsung Health integration now.
- Sleep and passive health tracking are more important to you than advanced workout tracking.
- You would rather use an available product than wait for a successor with no confirmed timetable.
- You can use Samsung’s sizing process to find a suitable fit.
Consider waiting if
- You specifically want improved sensors, longer battery life or broader compatibility that the current product does not provide.
- You prefer not to buy first-generation hardware or are holding out for a substantial design or feature change.
- You are willing to wait without a confirmed successor date.
Do not pay a premium on the assumption that Galaxy Ring 2 is imminent. The January size expansion was an update to the existing product, not evidence that a new generation was about to launch.
