The Samsung Galaxy Watch FE is a capable, compact Wear OS watch built on hardware closely related to the 2021 Galaxy Watch 4. Its sapphire-crystal cover, Samsung Health features and newer software support make it more than a straight reissue, but the older processor and small battery show their age. In 2026, it makes sense mainly for Samsung Galaxy phone owners who find it well below launch price; if a Galaxy Watch 6 or Watch 7 costs about the same, choose the newer model.
What the Galaxy Watch FE is—and is not
Samsung introduced the Galaxy Watch FE in 2024 as a lower-cost entry to its smartwatch range. It is not a scaled-down version of the latest flagship: its Exynos W920 processor is the same generation used in the Galaxy Watch 4, and it has 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. It runs Wear OS powered by Samsung with the One UI Watch interface. The important differences from buying an original Watch 4 include sapphire-crystal glass, refreshed colors and bands, and a more recent support position. Tech Advisor’s review discusses the Watch 4-era hardware; Samsung’s launch specifications list the materials and core hardware.
That combination makes the FE functional rather than fast. Everyday taps and swipes are generally responsive, but booting and opening some apps can feel slow. The W920 is adequate for notifications, basic apps and fitness tracking; it leaves less headroom than newer watches and is a weak reason to buy the FE at a price close to a newer model.
Design and display: comfortable, but only one size
The FE has an aluminum circular case in a single 40mm size. Samsung’s launch colors were Black, Pink Gold and Silver. It weighs about 26g without the band, according to Samsung’s specifications, and uses a one-click band system. The compact case is easy to wear overnight and suits smaller wrists, but buyers who want a larger screen or a bigger battery have no larger FE option.
#1 Best Overall
- BioActive Sensor Technology: Advanced sensor measures heart rate, blood oxygen, and body composition for detailed wellness insights.
- Super AMOLED Display: 1.2-inch always-on display delivers sharp visuals and clear readability for notifications and fitness data.
- Wear OS Powered by Samsung: Access Google apps, Play Store, and seamless integration with compatible Android devices.
- Durable and Lightweight Design: Aluminum case with water and dust resistance designed for everyday use and active lifestyles.
- Comprehensive Fitness and Sleep Tracking: Tracks workouts, activity, sleep patterns, and provides insights to support daily wellness goals.
The 1.2-inch full-color Super AMOLED display has a 396 × 396 resolution and supports an always-on display. Contrast and color are good for a small round screen, but the viewing area is limited and the surrounding bezels are more obvious than on newer Galaxy Watch models. For comparison, the 40mm Galaxy Watch 6 has a 1.3-inch display and a larger battery, according to TechRadar’s comparison. The FE’s screen is usable; it is simply smaller than newer alternatives.
Sapphire Crystal is a worthwhile durability upgrade, not a guarantee against damage. Samsung lists 5ATM water resistance, IP68 protection and MIL-STD-810G durability claims. These ratings do not mean the watch is suitable for diving or every water activity. Check Samsung’s current usage guidance and local warranty terms before relying on it for swimming or water sports.
Software and updates: a meaningful advantage over an old Watch 4
The FE launched with One UI 5 Watch and Wear OS. Samsung’s model-specific update record for SM-R861 shows a One UI 8 Watch upgrade in build R861XXU1CYK6, released December 11, 2025, and a later build, R861XXS2CZE1, released June 22, 2026. Samsung lists Android Wear 6.0 and a May 5, 2026 security patch for that June release. See the Samsung update record for SM-R861.
That update history is a real advantage over buying an original Watch 4, but it does not establish an exact final update date or guarantee future feature parity with flagship watches. Firmware timing can vary by country, carrier and Bluetooth or LTE model. Tech Advisor reports three Wear OS updates and four years of security patches as the support position; treat that as the policy reported in its review, not a guaranteed end date for every unit. Health and fitness: broad features, with important conditions
Samsung lists a BioActive Sensor with optical heart-rate monitoring, electrical heart sensing and bioelectrical impedance analysis. The feature set includes sleep monitoring and coaching, high- and low-heart-rate alerts, Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification, ECG, body-composition measurements, more than 100 workout modes, advanced running analysis and personalized heart-rate zones. These are useful tools for tracking activity and trends, but they are not substitutes for clinical diagnosis or care.
Do not assume every health feature will work in every country or with every Android phone. ECG, irregular-rhythm notifications and related functions can depend on regional regulatory approval, the paired phone, software versions and Samsung account or app requirements. Samsung’s general launch compatibility statement covers Android 6.0 or later and phones with more than 1.5GB of memory; some functions require Android 10 or later, at least 2GB of RAM and Samsung Health 6.22 or later. Verify the requirements for the specific feature and region before buying. Samsung’s launch information.
For casual workouts and everyday health tracking, the FE has the breadth expected of a Samsung smartwatch. Its small screen can make workout metrics less comfortable to read while moving than those on a larger watch. The available review evidence does not establish clinical accuracy or quantified GPS accuracy, so treat readings as consumer tracking data rather than precise measurements.
Battery life: plan on frequent charging
The battery is 247mAh, and charging uses WPC-based wireless charging. Samsung and TechRadar publish an “up to 40 hours” figure, which is a maximum rather than a typical expectation. In Tech Advisor’s mixed-use testing—with sleep, heart-rate and step tracking and calls—the watch lasted about 1.5 to 2 days. The same review found that charging from empty to full with the included 5W cable took just under two hours. TechRadar’s battery specification; Tech Advisor’s test conditions and result.

- Track your fitness progress with precise health metrics using the built-in BIA sensor and customized heart rate zones for tailored workout insights.
Heavy exercise, GPS use, LTE, frequent heart-rate measurement and always-on display settings can shorten that span. Expect nightly or near-nightly charging if you track sleep. That is manageable for a smartwatch, but a poor fit for buyers who want several days of endurance or a week-long fitness tracker.
Compatibility and connectivity: Android support is not feature parity
The FE is an Android watch, not an iPhone option established by the cited Samsung specifications. It is most seamless with a Samsung Galaxy phone, where setup and Samsung Health integration are strongest. Non-Samsung Android phones can be compatible, but setup may be less convenient and some Samsung-specific features—including certain health functions and camera control—may be restricted. Tech Advisor specifically found setup with a non-Samsung Android phone frustrating. Tech Advisor’s review.
Samsung’s U.S. announcement lists Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi on 2.4GHz and 5GHz, NFC, GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou and Galileo. LTE is available only on certain models and in certain markets. The Bluetooth-version listings are inconsistent across cited sources, so check the exact regional model rather than using that number to choose a watch. LTE also requires carrier support and usually a compatible smartwatch line or number-sharing plan; account for that recurring cost, not just the watch’s purchase price. The FE’s U.S. launch prices were $199 for Bluetooth and $249 for LTE; these are historical reference prices, not current retail quotes. Samsung’s June 2026 U.S. MSRP sheet omits the FE, which indicates it is not listed there as a current MSRP product but does not prove it has been discontinued everywhere. The same sheet lists the 40mm Bluetooth Galaxy Watch 7 at $249.99 and the 40mm Bluetooth Galaxy Watch 8 at $349.99 before discounts. | Option | Why it may suit you better | Trade-off or price context |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch 6 | Newer hardware, larger display and battery while retaining Samsung’s ecosystem. | New stock may be limited in 2026; refurbished units need careful checks of seller, warranty and battery condition. |
| Galaxy Watch 7 | A newer Samsung watch and the closest upgrade if its street price is near the FE. | Samsung’s June 2026 U.S. MSRP sheet lists the 40mm Bluetooth version at $249.99 before discounts. |
| Galaxy Watch 8 | Current-generation hardware for buyers prioritizing longer forward-looking relevance. | The 40mm Bluetooth model was listed at $349.99 in Samsung’s June 2026 U.S. MSRP sheet, a substantial premium before promotions. |
| Galaxy Fit 3 | Better suited to basic activity and notification tracking when battery life matters more than apps. | It is a fitness tracker, not a full Wear OS smartwatch; Android Central described nearly two weeks of battery life and around $60, but that retail price is time-sensitive. Android Central’s buying guide. |
| Amazfit Active 2 | Worth considering when price and battery life matter more than Samsung-specific integration. | Current price and local availability are not established here; TechRadar identifies it as a stronger low-price proposition when the FE is heavily discounted. TechRadar’s review. |
As a practical price rule, the FE is usually poor value near $200, can be reasonable around $150 for a Samsung-phone owner, and becomes a stronger budget proposition around $100. These are buying thresholds, not quoted current market prices. If a Watch 6 or Watch 7 is within roughly $25–$50, favor the newer watch, provided its condition and warranty are sound.
What to check before buying older stock
Since the FE launched in 2024, a unit sold in 2026 may have spent time in storage. For used or refurbished alternatives, battery condition matters too. Before paying, verify the exact Bluetooth or LTE model, seller reputation, return window, warranty status and—where available—manufacture or activation date. Confirm LTE carrier compatibility separately; a low upfront price does not include a cellular plan.
Who should buy the Galaxy Watch FE?
Buy it if you have a Samsung Galaxy phone, want Samsung Health and Wear OS apps in a compact watch, value sapphire glass, and find a new or reputable refurbished unit at a substantial discount. It is a sensible basic smartwatch when its price reflects its older internals and you are comfortable charging frequently.
Who should skip it?
Skip it if long battery life, a large display, fast app loading, long GPS sessions or serious training analytics are priorities. It is also a weak choice for a non-Samsung Android owner who does not need Samsung-specific functions, or anyone paying close to the price of a Watch 6 or Watch 7. Buyers seeking only steps, sleep and notifications may be better served by a fitness tracker.
