Citymapper on Apple Watch: What It Does and How to Use It

Citymapper’s Apple Watch app is best for quick checks during a journey, while route planning and major changes remain easier on the iPhone.

Yes—Citymapper has an Apple Watch app and supports watch-face complications. It works best as a glanceable companion for an active urban journey: plan and choose a route on your iPhone, then use the Watch to check the next useful trip detail. It is not a dependable substitute for the iPhone when you need to compare routes, inspect a map, or replan after a disruption.

What Citymapper does on Apple Watch

Citymapper describes its Watch app as a way to surface journey information when it is useful—such as the next departure, the next stop, or when to get off—rather than duplicating the full phone interface. Its Watch announcement also confirms support for complications, the small information areas or launch points available on compatible watch faces.

That makes the Watch most useful for brief checks while walking to a platform, boarding, or approaching a stop. Citymapper’s general iPhone listing advertises live departures, vehicle tracking, alerts, and step-by-step “GO” guidance, but it does not establish that every one of those features appears identically on the Watch. What you see can depend on the route, city, transport mode, connection, and app version.

Citymapper’s Apple Watch announcement explains the companion approach; its U.S. App Store listing describes the broader app.

Compatibility and cost

As listed in the U.S. App Store on August 16, 2026, Citymapper requires iOS 17 or later on iPhone and watchOS 10 or later on Apple Watch. It is free to download, with optional in-app purchases. The same U.S. listing displayed Citymapper CLUB entries at $1.49 and $9.99 and a CLUB+ entry at $99.99; it does not establish the billing interval for those amounts. Prices, plans, and availability may differ by storefront, so check the in-app purchase screen for the current local price and renewal terms.

Before installing, verify that your city and the transit agency you use are covered. Citymapper’s listing directs users to its coverage information; support in a city does not guarantee complete data for every route, station, ferry, or temporary replacement service.

How to install Citymapper on Apple Watch

Install from the iPhone Watch app

  1. Install or update Citymapper on your iPhone.
  2. Open the Watch app on the iPhone.
  3. Scroll to the available apps section and find Citymapper.
  4. Tap Install if the app is not already on the Watch, then wait for installation to finish.

Install directly on the Watch

  1. Open the App Store on the Apple Watch.

  3. Download it and authenticate if prompted.

Apple also documents direct downloads through the Watch App Store in its guide to getting apps on Apple Watch. Screen labels can vary by watchOS release.

Use Citymapper for an active journey

  1. Open Citymapper on the iPhone and enter your destination.
  2. Compare the available routes, then select the one you want.
  3. Start the journey with Citymapper’s GO or active-trip control, when offered.
  4. Use the Watch to glance at the next relevant instruction or trip detail as you travel.
  5. Return to the iPhone for a full map, route comparison, or substantial itinerary change.

Citymapper’s iPhone app promotes multimodal planning and GO-style guidance, but the Watch is best treated as the at-a-glance execution layer. Exact Watch prompts may vary, and a missed connection or service change may require checking the phone or the transit agency’s own service information.

Add a Citymapper complication

A complication is a watch-face feature that can show limited app information or provide a quick route into an app. Citymapper confirms complication support, but the available formats and how much context they show depend on the watch face, the space available, and Citymapper’s current implementation. Do not assume that every complication continuously shows live departures or a complete itinerary.

  1. Touch and hold the current watch face.
  2. Tap Edit or Customize, then swipe to the complication settings.
  3. Tap the position you want to change.
  4. Scroll through the available apps and choose Citymapper.
  5. Press the Digital Crown or tap the face to save.

A small slot may primarily serve as a launch point; a larger slot may have room for more contextual information. The active-trip view is the more relevant place to check journey details once you have started travelling. The editing steps and labels can differ by face and watchOS version.

Does Citymapper work without the iPhone?

Citymapper’s published Watch material presents the app as a companion, not as a guaranteed standalone transit planner. The practical approach is to plan and select the route on the iPhone before setting off. A disconnected Watch may not receive fresh live data or itinerary changes, and the available documentation does not establish that every trip can be planned or recalculated from the Watch alone.

Live departures and location-aware guidance also depend on working connectivity, location services, supported local data, and the current app build. Offline map claims for the broader app should not be read as a promise of live Watch navigation offline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connectivity, location, and battery limits

Live transit data depends on the feeds Citymapper receives, while location accuracy depends on the device’s location signals. Underground sections, weak cellular coverage, station Wi-Fi transitions, and dense buildings can delay updates. Citymapper itself notes that live times may take longer to load on the Watch when connectivity is difficult.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The App Store listing warns that background location use may reduce battery life. If you plan to follow a long journey, start with a reasonably charged Watch and keep in mind that active navigation, weak connectivity, or a low-power state can make the experience less useful. Check Citymapper’s location permissions on both devices and enable only the access needed for your intended use; the appropriate setting depends on how you use the app.

When a displayed time looks stale, treat it as unconfirmed rather than proof that a vehicle is arriving. Check the transit agency’s service alerts or live information when the timing matters.

Troubleshoot common Apple Watch problems

Citymapper does not appear on the Watch

  • Check that the iPhone meets the iOS 17 requirement and the Watch meets the watchOS 10 requirement shown in the U.S. App Store listing.
  • Open the iPhone’s Watch app and check whether Citymapper is installed; alternatively, search for it in the Watch App Store.
  • Update Citymapper and both operating systems, then restart the iPhone and Watch.
  • If installation remains stuck, remove and reinstall the Watch app.

The Watch is not syncing with the iPhone

  • Keep the devices near each other and make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled.
  • Open Citymapper on both devices and check that the Watch app is installed alongside the iPhone app.
  • Restart both devices. If syncing still fails, Citymapper recommends uninstalling and reinstalling the Watch app.
  • Before reinstalling, make sure any account details or saved information you rely on are synchronized.

These steps align with Citymapper’s connection troubleshooting guidance.

Live times are missing or slow

  • Check the network connection and, if possible, move to an area with better reception.
  • Reopen Citymapper and confirm that the city and agency are supported.
  • Compare the information with the transit agency’s service alerts, particularly during a disruption.

Your location is wrong

  • Check that location services are enabled and that Wi-Fi is on; Citymapper says Wi-Fi can help some devices improve location accuracy.
  • Move outdoors or somewhere with a clearer signal, then reopen the app.
  • Compare the Watch’s position with the iPhone’s. Avoid relying on a weak location fix deep inside a station.

The route is wrong or incomplete

  • Recalculate on the iPhone and confirm the direction, destination, and station entrance.
  • Check planned closures and live service alerts, and compare with the agency’s app or website.
  • Report persistent app issues through Citymapper Support.

Citymapper compared with Apple Maps, Google Maps, and Transit

The best option depends on local coverage and what you want to do from your wrist. These apps are not interchangeable in every city, and a feature advertised for an iPhone app does not automatically imply the same Watch experience.

App Watch use and strengths Trade-offs
Citymapper Transit-focused companion for glanceable journey details and complications; the iPhone app supports multimodal planning in covered cities. Coverage varies by city and agency. The Watch should not be treated as a full replacement for iPhone planning or official ticketing.
Apple Maps Native Apple Watch directions for driving, walking, cycling, and transit where available; useful for Apple ecosystem continuity and general navigation. Transit feature availability is regional, and transit depth may differ from Citymapper’s in a particular city. See Apple’s Watch Maps directions guide and watchOS feature availability.
Google Maps Broad general-purpose mapping and place information. Google says Watch step-by-step directions are available when navigation is started on the phone. The Watch workflow depends on the phone-led start described by Google; do not assume transit-specific Watch features match Citymapper’s. See Google’s Apple Watch help page.
Transit Transit’s support page describes nearby routes, next departures, directions to a stop, pinned lines, and a complication. Coverage and pricing depend on location and plan; verify local agency support and current requirements. Transit’s cited support page states a minimum of watchOS 8, but that requirement may change. See Transit’s Apple Watch guide.

Citymapper is a strong candidate if you make transit-heavy trips in a well-supported city and want more than a route list—for example, a multimodal plan paired with quick journey checks on the Watch. Apple Maps suits users who prioritize native integration and general directions; Google Maps is convenient if its maps and places are already part of their routine; Transit is worth comparing when nearby departures and pinned lines matter most.

For tickets, stored-value cards, account-based fares, or official disruption notices, check the relevant local transit agency. Routing support in Citymapper does not establish that it sells tickets or replaces a transit card or payment setup.

When Citymapper on Apple Watch is worth using

  • Consider it if Citymapper covers your regular routes and you want to check journey progress without repeatedly taking out your phone.
  • Keep another option available if your trips depend on unreliable signals, incomplete agency data, or frequent service changes.
  • Choose a different primary tool if you mainly drive, need a fully offline standalone navigator, or want the Watch to handle complex route planning by itself.
  • Pair it with an agency app when you need local ticketing or authoritative service notices.
