Its stainless-steel case, circular AMOLED screen and click-by-click rotating bezel still make for a distinctive unboxing and hands-on tour; in 2026, though, app availability and phone compatibility deserve as much attention as the hardware. This guide covers the box, controls, setup and key features, then explains what to check before buying a used or old-stock unit.
What is the Galaxy Watch3?
Samsung launched the Galaxy Watch3 in August 2020 as a premium, traditional-style smartwatch alongside—not as a direct replacement for—the sport-focused Galaxy Watch Active2. It came in 41 mm and 45 mm sizes, with Bluetooth/Wi-Fi and LTE versions. The standard case is stainless steel; Samsung later offered a 45 mm titanium Bluetooth edition. At launch, the watch ran Tizen-based Wearable OS 5.5, rather than Wear OS. Samsung’s launch announcement listed U.S. Bluetooth starting prices of $399.99 for 41 mm and $429.99 for 45 mm; LTE models started at $449.99 and $479.99, respectively. Those are historical launch prices, not an indication of current stock or used-market value.
The defining hardware feature is the physical rotating bezel: turn it to move through menus and notifications without covering the screen. That tactile control, classic styling and compact 41 mm option remain the clearest reasons to seek one out.
What comes in the box?
A standard retail package is expected to include the watch with a strap, a wireless charging dock or puck, and quick-start, warranty and regulatory paperwork. Package details can differ by market, size and edition; a used or refurbished listing may instead include a replacement strap or third-party charger. Samsung’s package and charging documentation is a useful reference, but check the seller’s actual contents rather than assuming an opened box is complete.

Before buying, confirm that the charger is designed for the Galaxy Watch3. It uses WPC-based wireless charging; a generic Qi pad or phone-based reverse charging should not be assumed to work reliably. Samsung described charging with compatible wireless equipment and Wireless PowerShare on compatible Galaxy phones in its launch materials.
Hardware tour: display, bezel, buttons and sensors
Front and rotating bezel
The round, full-color AMOLED display measures approximately 1.2 inches on the 41 mm model and 1.4 inches on the 45 mm model. It supports an always-on display and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass DX. The ridged physical bezel encircles the screen and clicks as it turns, providing a precise way to scroll through notifications, settings and widgets while keeping fingers off the display.
Case sides and controls
On the right are two buttons: a Home/power button and a Back button. A microphone opening is also present. The opposite side has a speaker opening, depending on model and regional configuration. Button and speaker condition are worth checking on a used watch: press each control, test the bezel for smooth, even clicks, and inspect the case for dents or signs of repair.
Rear sensors and durability
The back houses optical heart-rate hardware and the sensor array used for features such as ECG where supported, along with motion and environmental sensors including an accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer and ambient-light sensor. Samsung listed 5ATM water resistance, IP68 protection and MIL-STD-810G durability testing for the Watch3. These ratings do not make it indestructible or suitable for every water activity: avoid diving, hot tubs and high-pressure water, and remember that impact, wear or repairs may compromise seals.

How to set up and pair the watch
- Charge and start it. Place the watch on a compatible charger, then press and hold the Home/power button to turn it on.
- Open Galaxy Wearable. On a compatible Android phone, install or launch Galaxy Wearable, then choose the Galaxy Watch3 when it appears.
- Confirm the pairing code. Check that the code on the phone matches the one shown on the watch, then confirm on both devices.
- Complete prompts and permissions. Follow the phone’s account and permission prompts. Install or update companion apps such as Samsung Health if needed.
- Choose what the watch can access. Configure notifications, health and location permissions, and backup preferences. Set a PIN if you plan to use security-sensitive functions or LTE features.
- Check for updates and personalize. Install any update offered, then choose a watch face and arrange notifications, tiles and shortcuts. Samsung documents its update path at Watch software updates.
Samsung’s general U.S. compatibility page lists Android 5.0 and at least 1.5 GB of RAM for Watch3 pairing, but that is not a promise that every feature works on every phone. Requirements can be stricter for health functions, and Samsung notes that some older watches are not compatible with Galaxy phones launched with Android 14, including the Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy A25 and Galaxy A15. Review the current Galaxy Watch phone-compatibility guidance for the specific phone and function.

If pairing fails
- Make sure Bluetooth is enabled, keep the watch close to the phone, and restart both devices.
- Update Galaxy Wearable, remove a stuck Watch3 entry from the phone’s Bluetooth settings, then retry discovery from Galaxy Wearable.
- If the watch belonged to someone else, factory-reset it before pairing. First confirm that important health data has synchronized; a reset can erase data stored on the watch.
- If setup still fails, check Samsung’s phone compatibility notes and whether Galaxy Wearable can access the required companion services in your region.
Using the interface: faces, tiles and apps
The home screen is the selected watch face. From there, the bezel and touch gestures move through notifications, quick settings, widgets or tiles, and the app launcher. During a tour, try the bezel for scrolling through a notification or moving between tiles: it is the Watch3’s most distinctive control and lets you navigate without obscuring text with a finger.
Watch faces and tiles can be customized, and the watch can show phone notifications, control music, handle calls, track workouts and provide quick access to Samsung Health. The watch also includes settings for display, sound, vibration and gestures. The Galaxy Store remains part of Samsung’s documented legacy app-management path for Watch3; see the company’s companion-app information and app-management steps. But documentation for an older feature is not a guarantee that a particular app or face can still be downloaded in 2026.

Health and fitness features—and their limits
The Watch3 offers heart-rate monitoring, sleep and workout tracking, blood-oxygen-related measurements, fall detection and VO₂ max-related fitness measurements, subject to software and feature availability. ECG is also available in supported markets and configurations. These are not universally available capabilities: requirements may depend on the country, watch model and software, phone model and Android version.
In the United States, Samsung says its Health Monitor ECG app supports Galaxy Watch3 models running Tizen 4.0.0.8 or later when paired with a Galaxy phone running Android 7 or later. That U.S.-specific condition does not establish availability elsewhere or on every Android phone; consult Samsung’s Health Monitor compatibility guidance. Health readings are for wellness or informational purposes and do not replace professional diagnosis or treatment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Battery life and charging
The 41 mm model has a 247 mAh battery and the 45 mm model a 340 mAh battery. Samsung described the Watch3 as lasting more than a day, but that launch-era claim is not a fixed endurance guarantee. Always-on display, LTE, GPS workouts, sleep tracking, frequent heart-rate measurements, music streaming and connectivity settings all affect runtime. The larger model has more battery capacity and is the more sensible pick if endurance matters most.
For a used unit, battery condition matters more than its original capacity. Ask how long it runs between charges and test that it charges consistently before relying on it for a full day or overnight tracking.

Bluetooth or LTE?
| Version | Practical fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth/Wi-Fi | Best if you usually carry your phone; many connected functions use the phone or a known Wi-Fi network. | Confirm phone compatibility and that the watch pairs successfully. |
| LTE | Can support calls, messages, notifications and some connected services when you leave your phone behind. | Requires an LTE Watch3, compatible carrier and active wearable plan with correct provisioning. |
A Bluetooth Watch3 cannot be converted to LTE with a software change. Even an LTE model needs compatible carrier activation, and some setup and features still depend on a phone.
Compatibility and Tizen services in 2026
A Samsung Galaxy phone is the safest choice for broadest compatibility. A compatible non-Samsung Android phone may handle basic pairing and notifications, but Samsung-specific features can be restricted. Do not assume full iPhone support: Samsung listed iPhone 5 and later running iOS 9 or later at launch, but iPhone functionality is not equivalent to the Android experience, and features such as ECG, Samsung Pay/Wallet and some health tools may be unavailable or limited.
The larger concern is the Watch3’s legacy Tizen platform. Samsung still documents Watch3 support and app-management steps, but the company has also published regional notices about ending Tizen watch-content services. The Spanish notice describes that service change for its region: Samsung’s Tizen service notice. Some legacy functions may continue to work, but app-store and content availability is no longer a safe assumption in 2026. The Watch3 does not use the current Google Play-based Wear OS ecosystem; Samsung identifies Watch4 and later as Wear OS models in its Tizen and Wear OS guide.
Should you buy a Galaxy Watch3 now?
It may suit you if…
- You specifically want a classic-looking watch with a physical rotating bezel.
- You find a working unit at a low price and can confirm it pairs with your phone.
- You mainly need basic notifications and fitness tracking, rather than a current app ecosystem.
Choose something newer if…
- You rely on installing new apps and watch faces or want a current Wear OS platform.
- You need confidence in ongoing software support and broad compatibility with recent phones.
- You depend on a particular health feature, cellular service or payment function and cannot verify it works on the exact model, phone and region.
For a used or refurbished watch, check the model number (common families include SM-R840, SM-R845, SM-R850 and SM-R855), size, Bluetooth or LTE capability, screen condition, bezel and button operation, battery behavior, charger and strap. Confirm that it can be factory-reset and paired, and use a seller with a return policy. A prior repair or case damage can also affect water resistance, so do not rely on a rating as proof that a second-hand unit remains sealed.
Samsung’s U.S. product page may still display historical or promotional pricing, but it is not proof of current inventory or a dependable 2026 street price. Treat any listing as a specific offer to verify, not as evidence that the Watch3 is broadly available new.
