Samsung Galaxy Watch7 review: A worthwhile, incremental upgrade

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes—Samsung Galaxy Watch7 is worth buying, but it is not a dramatic redesign. The familiar case hides Samsung’s newer 3nm Exynos W1000 processor, upgraded health sensors, dual-band GPS and brighter sapphire displays. New smartwatch buyers and owners of Galaxy Watch4 or Watch5 gain the most. Galaxy Watch6 owners should upgrade mainly for the sensor and GPS improvements, because battery life and the overall design remain familiar.

What is the Galaxy Watch7?

Samsung launched Galaxy Watch7 on July 10, 2024, in 40mm and 44mm cases, with Bluetooth and LTE versions. U.S. retail availability followed on July 24, 2024, according to Android Central. The watch uses Wear OS with Samsung’s health and phone ecosystem, and its case remains visually close to Galaxy Watch6.

The meaningful update is inside: a 3nm Exynos W1000 platform, a newer sensor array and dual-band GPS. Those changes improve responsiveness, health tracking and outdoor positioning without changing the basic watch experience.

Galaxy Watch7 specifications and prices

Version Display Battery Weight Samsung MSRP at launch
40mm Bluetooth 1.3-inch, 432 × 432 Super AMOLED 300mAh 28.8g $299.99
44mm Bluetooth 1.5-inch, 480 × 480 Super AMOLED 425mAh 33.8g $329.99
40mm LTE 1.3-inch, 432 × 432 Super AMOLED 300mAh 28.8g $349.99
44mm LTE 1.5-inch, 480 × 480 Super AMOLED 425mAh 33.8g $379.99

Both sizes have 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, the Exynos W1000 processor, a 5ATM water-resistance rating and a 9.7mm case thickness. The 40mm case measures 40.4 × 40.4mm; the 44mm case measures 44.4 × 44.4mm.

What changed from Galaxy Watch6?

Exynos W1000 performance

The 3nm Exynos W1000 is the largest platform change. Apps and menus feel more current, while the newer manufacturing process is intended to improve efficiency. The watch still behaves like an evolution of Watch6 rather than a new category of device.

New health sensors

Samsung revised the heart-rate sensor and expanded the sensing package. It includes optical and electrical heart sensors, bioelectrical impedance, an infrared temperature sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer, geomagnetic sensor and ambient-light sensor. Heart-rate results are broadly competitive, although no wrist sensor is perfect.

Samsung promotes personalized workouts, sleep and wellness insights, preventative health monitoring, fall detection, SOS calling and Galaxy AI integrations. These features provide wellness information, not a medical diagnosis; symptoms and medical decisions should be handled by a qualified professional.

Dual-band GPS

Dual-band GPS is the most practical upgrade for runners and hikers. It can maintain a more reliable position among buildings, trees and other obstructions than the single-band approach used by many older watches. Casual walkers may notice little difference, but people who record outdoor routes have a clear reason to prefer Watch7.

Brighter sapphire displays and gestures

The Super AMOLED screens are brighter and protected by sapphire crystal. Watch7 also supports gesture controls, including double-pinch actions, although those controls require a compatible Galaxy smartphone and current software.

How long does Galaxy Watch7 battery last?

Samsung rates the 40mm model for up to 40 hours with always-on display (AOD) off and up to 30 hours with AOD on. Those are best-case official figures, not a guaranteed schedule.

In independent use, the watch lasted about 30–50 hours depending on features, usage and conditions. With AOD off, continuous heart-rate tracking, overnight sleep tracking and light workouts, it managed roughly two days. Outdoor-heavy use reduced runtime to about 33–36 hours. GPS workouts, music streaming and hotword detection can make daily charging necessary.

Charging and the lost PowerShare feature

The watch charges at 10W and took about 90–100 minutes to reach full charge from empty in independent testing. Wireless PowerShare from older Galaxy Watches no longer works: the redesigned sensor area changed the charging-coil arrangement. Plan to use the supplied charging puck or a compatible replacement rather than a Galaxy phone’s back panel.

40mm or 44mm: which size should you choose?

Choose Best for Trade-off
40mm Smaller wrists, lighter feel and lower entry price 300mAh battery and smaller display
44mm Longer endurance, larger text and easier workout viewing Heavier, larger case and higher price

The 44mm model’s 425mAh battery gives it more capacity, but actual endurance still depends on AOD, GPS, sensors and connectivity. Measure your wrist and prioritize comfort: a watch worn continuously for sleep tracking should not feel cumbersome.

Bluetooth or LTE?

Bluetooth

Bluetooth models are the better value when your phone is usually nearby. Calls, messages, streaming and many data functions depend on the phone or Wi-Fi.

LTE

LTE lets the watch use cellular service away from the phone for supported calls, messages and data. It costs more up front and requires a compatible carrier plan, so the convenience is worthwhile mainly for runners, commuters and people who regularly leave their phone behind.

Does Galaxy Watch7 work with your Android phone?

Samsung lists Android 11 or newer as the minimum compatibility requirement. Some functions differ or are unavailable on non-Samsung phones, and double-pinch controls require a compatible Galaxy smartphone with current software. If you use a Samsung phone, setup and health features are generally the most complete; owners of other Android phones should check which Samsung Health and calling features their model supports before buying.

Should Galaxy Watch6 owners upgrade?

Your current watch Upgrade case
Galaxy Watch4 or Watch5 Strong. You gain the newer processor, sensor generation, dual-band GPS, brighter sapphire display and gesture controls.
Galaxy Watch6 Selective. Upgrade for improved GPS and sensing, especially for outdoor training or health tracking. The familiar case and similar battery behavior make it a poor value if Watch6 already meets your needs.
No smartwatch Strong. Watch7 is a current Samsung option with two sizes, LTE availability and a broad health feature set.

Galaxy Watch7 versus Pixel Watch 3 and OnePlus Watch 3

Watch7 is the natural choice when Samsung phone integration, Samsung Health and Galaxy-specific features matter most. Its dual-band GPS and sapphire display also suit outdoor exercise and everyday durability.

Pixel Watch 3 is more compelling for users invested in Google’s Pixel software and Fitbit ecosystem. OnePlus Watch 3 is an alternative for Android users who place battery endurance ahead of Samsung-specific integration. The best choice depends less on headline specifications than on your phone, health platform and tolerance for charging every day or two.

Who should buy Galaxy Watch7?

  • New smartwatch buyers who use an Android 11-or-newer phone.
  • Galaxy Watch4 or Watch5 owners wanting better sensors, GPS and performance.
  • Runners and hikers who benefit from dual-band positioning.
  • Samsung-phone owners who want Galaxy Health, gesture and AI integrations.

Who should skip it?

  • Galaxy Watch6 owners satisfied with current GPS and health tracking.
  • Anyone seeking multi-day battery life without regular charging.
  • iPhone users; Samsung specifies Android compatibility, not iOS support.
  • Buyers who rely on Wireless PowerShare from a Galaxy phone.

Verdict

Galaxy Watch7 is a worthwhile incremental upgrade. The Exynos W1000, revised health sensors, dual-band GPS, brighter sapphire displays and gestures address real weaknesses, even though the exterior looks almost unchanged. Buy the 44mm version for its larger screen and greater battery capacity, choose 40mm for comfort and price, and choose LTE only if phone-free connectivity justifies the carrier cost. Its main limitation remains endurance: expect roughly 30–50 hours in real use and around 90–100 minutes for a full charge.
