Samsung did unveil the Galaxy Ring in July 2024, but its first-generation ring did not launch with the NFC payments or ECG described in a February report. The timing was right; those two features were not confirmed for the ring. Samsung’s final specifications list Bluetooth Low Energy, an accelerometer, PPG and skin-temperature sensing. NFC and ECG-related features appeared in the specifications for Samsung’s Galaxy Watch models instead.
What the February 2024 report claimed
A February 21, 2024 report said Samsung might unveil the Galaxy Ring in the second half of July. It attributed the forecast and feature details to a South Korean report, not to an official Samsung announcement. The expected features included ECG, wireless payments, sleep and fitness tracking, blood-flow measurement, possible remote-control functions and eight size options. What “coming in July” meant
Samsung officially announced the Galaxy Ring at Galaxy Unpacked in Paris on July 10, 2024. U.S. preorders began that day, and general availability in the U.S. followed on July 24. Did the Galaxy Ring launch with NFC payments?
No. Samsung’s published Galaxy Ring specification lists Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) 5.4, not NFC. Samsung also stated in a response on its product page that the ring does not include NFC payment capabilities. The distinction matters in the launch announcement, which covers the ring alongside watches: NFC appears in the Galaxy Watch specifications, not the ring’s listed connectivity. Did the Galaxy Ring include ECG?
The final Galaxy Ring specifications do not list ECG or an electrical heart-signal sensor. The ring’s listed sensors are an accelerometer, PPG and a skin-temperature sensor. PPG-based heart-rate monitoring is not an electrocardiogram.
Samsung’s launch materials discuss ECG and related cardiac features for the Galaxy Watch7, alongside the ring’s separate sensor list. The February report’s ECG claim therefore was not confirmed for the shipping ring; this does not establish that Samsung promised the feature and later removed it. What the Galaxy Ring actually tracks
Samsung positioned the ring as a wellness wearable connected to Samsung Health. Its launch features included sleep tracking and analysis, heart-rate monitoring and alerts, activity and workout tracking, skin-temperature-based cycle tracking in supported markets, Energy Score and Wellness Tips. Samsung also described added ecosystem benefits when the ring is worn with a compatible Galaxy Watch.

Samsung’s final U.S. size range was 5 through 13—nine options, rather than the eight described in the pre-launch report. Because fit affects comfort and sensor contact, Samsung recommended using its sizing kit and wearing a sample ring for at least 24 hours before choosing. The Galaxy Ring is most relevant to someone already using compatible Galaxy devices who wants discreet sleep and wellness tracking without wearing a watch. The ring depends on a compatible Android phone and Samsung’s apps and account, so it is not an iPhone option or a standalone tracker.

If ECG or contactless payments are essential, look at the Galaxy Watch7 or Galaxy Watch Ultra rather than buying the ring on the strength of the February headline. Samsung’s launch specifications assign NFC and ECG-related capabilities to those watches. A watch brings a different form factor, however, and may be less appealing to someone who wants an unobtrusive device for overnight wear.
Verdict on the original headline
The July prediction was accurate: Samsung announced the Galaxy Ring on July 10, 2024, and U.S. sales began July 24. But the first-generation ring’s official specifications did not include NFC or ECG. Those claims belonged to the pre-launch report, while Samsung’s launch materials associated NFC and ECG-related functions with its watches.
