The main reason for the app was Fossil’s transition to Wear OS 3 and its plan to manage hybrid and touchscreen watches through one manufacturer-specific companion experience. A Gen 7 was compatible with that strategy, not announced by it.
The short version
- Fossil Smartwatches became Fossil’s unified phone app for supported hybrid and touchscreen watches.
- Wear OS 3 changed how Fossil watches were paired and managed, moving supported models away from the older Google Wear OS companion-app arrangement.
- The app’s forward-looking design did not establish a Gen 7 name, launch date, specifications, chipset or retail release.
The app is free on Google Play and the Apple App Store. Store metadata can vary by country and change over time.
What the Fossil Smartwatches app actually does
Fossil describes the app as a single hub for hybrid watches and touchscreen watches powered by Wear OS. Its functions include:
- Pairing or activating supported watches.
- Watch-face, complication, shortcut and tile customization.
- Notification controls.
- Activity, sleep and other wellness information.
- Management of multiple Fossil watches.
- Support and troubleshooting tools.
- Last-known-location features and connections to voice-assistant services where supported.
Fossil’s overview is available on its official app page. It also warns that supported features vary by phone platform and country.

Why Wear OS 3 changed Fossil’s pairing model
Older Fossil Wear OS watches generally used Google’s Wear OS by Google phone app for initial pairing and routine management. Wear OS 3 introduced a different manufacturer-integration model. Contemporary reporting and comments from Fossil’s product team indicated that Fossil needed its own companion experience for setup, watch controls, wellness functions, customization and support.
That did not remove Google from the watch. Google accounts, Google Play, watch-side services and third-party Wear OS applications remained important. Fossil’s app replaced or supplemented the phone-side companion role for supported Wear OS 3 watches; it did not replace the wider Google ecosystem. See the contemporary explanations from Droid Life and Fossil’s product-team discussion on Reddit.
Did the app prove Fossil Gen 7 was coming?
No. The app showed that Fossil was preparing software for Wear OS 3 and for a broader connected-watch portfolio. It made a future Fossil Wear OS watch technically plausible, but it was not a hardware announcement.
| Evidence | What it supports | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| New Fossil Smartwatches app | Wear OS 3 transition and unified product integration | A Gen 7 launch |
| Fossil discussion of future generations | Forward-looking software architecture | A product name, date or specifications |
| Gen 6 Wellness Edition with Wear OS 3 | Fossil had a Wear OS 3 watch | That the watch was Gen 7 |
| Current store support for Gen 6 Wear OS and hybrid watches | The app’s continuing identity for those devices | That a Gen 7 exists or is supported |
Contemporary coverage often connected the app with expectations for a Gen 7, but Android Authority and 9to5Google illustrate the distinction between preparation and confirmation. The available evidence does not verify a released Fossil Gen 7 or an official Gen 7 announcement. “Unconfirmed” is more accurate than “cancelled.”

Which Fossil watches were involved?
Fossil Gen 6
Gen 6 was the main existing touchscreen platform associated with Fossil’s Wear OS 3 upgrade. Fossil’s team described the update as applying to Gen 6 watches using Qualcomm’s Wear 4100 or 4100+ platform. The rollout was historical and varied by model, region and software build.
Gen 6 Wellness Edition
The Gen 6 Wellness Edition was introduced as a Fossil-branded Wear OS 3 watch. It retained the Gen 6 identity; it was not a Gen 7. Contemporary coverage from Frandroid made that distinction explicit.
Hybrid watches
Fossil’s hybrid watches use a different operating and pairing model from full touchscreen Wear OS watches, but Fossil designed the new app to manage both categories. Hybrid support therefore explains part of the app’s all-in-one positioning; it is not evidence of a new Wear OS generation.
What Wear OS 3 changed on Fossil watches
Wear OS 3 provided a newer software base, Fossil’s refreshed wellness experience, updated watch faces and controls, and newer or refreshed third-party applications through Google Play. Google Assistant arrived later for Fossil Wear OS 3 watches rather than necessarily being available at the initial rollout. Engadget reported the later Assistant availability and its phone-platform requirements.

Fossil acknowledged that the rollout initially had missing features and bugs under active work. Wear OS 3 therefore should not be read as a guarantee that every feature appeared immediately or identically on every Gen 6 model.
Which app should you use?
| Watch situation | Likely phone app | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Supported Fossil Gen 6 running Wear OS 3 | Fossil Smartwatches | Use the watch’s setup screen and current store listing to confirm support. |
| Supported Fossil hybrid watch | Fossil Smartwatches | Features differ from touchscreen Wear OS models. |
| Fossil Gen 6 still running Wear OS 2 | Google Wear OS app for the existing pairing state | An eventual upgrade may require a reset and fresh pairing through Fossil’s app; model and rollout behavior varied. |
| Legacy Fossil Wear OS watch | Usually the older Google Wear OS flow | Do not assume the current Fossil app supports every legacy model. |
Fossil’s current Google Play listing specifically identifies Gen 6 Wear OS and hybrid smartwatches. Its general Wear OS setup page still documents an older Google-app flow, so the watch’s software version and on-screen instructions matter more than the generation label alone.
Setup for a Fossil watch already using Wear OS 3
- Charge and power on the watch.
- Install Fossil Smartwatches from Google Play or the Apple App Store.
- Enable Bluetooth and open the Fossil app.
- Follow its pairing flow and sign in or create the requested account.
- Allow the notification, location, health-data and background permissions required by the features you want.
- Connect the watch to Wi-Fi and let synchronization finish.
- Open Google Play on the watch and install pending watch and application updates.
Android generally offers the broadest Wear OS functionality. iPhone compatibility and individual features can be narrower, and Fossil states that availability varies by platform and country.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Updating a Gen 6 that still uses Wear OS 2
- Pair the watch through Google’s Wear OS app if that is the flow currently shown on the watch.
- Install available phone, watch and Google Play updates.
- Keep the watch charged and connected while an offered Wear OS 3 update installs.
- After the upgrade, follow the watch’s instructions to install Fossil Smartwatches.
- If the major upgrade requires it, factory-reset and re-pair the watch. A reset can erase local watch data and settings, so back up or synchronize what you can first.
Update offers depended on model, region, rollout stage and software build; the reset step was not universal for every Fossil configuration.

Pairing problems and practical fixes
The phone cannot find the watch
- Confirm the watch has power and is close to the phone.
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on.
- Restart both devices.
- Remove stale Bluetooth or Wear OS pairings.
- Open the companion app that matches the watch’s current operating-system state.
- Only then consider a factory reset, after accounting for possible data loss.
- Start pairing inside the companion app rather than from the phone’s Bluetooth settings alone.
Fossil’s setup guidance also recommends checking Bluetooth, restarting devices and unpairing when pairing codes do not match.
The app installs but features are missing
- The watch may still be on Wear OS 2.
- The phone operating system may be unsupported.
- Location, notification, health or Bluetooth permissions may be blocked.
- Battery-optimization settings may stop background synchronization.
- Google Play services or watch-side apps may be outdated.
- The device may be a hybrid model with a different feature set.
- A regional restriction may apply.
Google Assistant is absent
Assistant availability arrived later on Fossil Wear OS 3 watches and depended on Android, Google-app and service requirements. Its absence does not by itself mean that Fossil Smartwatches is malfunctioning.
What the app did not fix
A better companion app solved a pairing and integration problem; it did not guarantee long-term operating-system or security updates. Wear OS 3 also did not make Gen 6 hardware equivalent to newer watches: battery condition, GPS use, health sensors and chipset age remain separate considerations. Phone platform, country and Google-service availability can affect features, and the slow historical rollout is a reason to treat future-update assumptions cautiously. Later reporting from 9to5Google provides additional context on Fossil’s Wear OS direction.
Should you keep or buy a Fossil Gen 6?
Make the decision from the exact watch and software state, not from the app’s existence.
- Keep it if you value Fossil’s design, already own a healthy Gen 6 and are satisfied with its current Wear OS 3 functionality.
- Be cautious if you need dependable long-term updates, a fresh battery, the newest health features or a clearly supported current platform.
- Check before buying that the seller states the model, operating-system state, battery condition, warranty and return terms.
- Do not buy on a Gen 7 promise. The companion app does not establish that such a watch launched or remains on sale.
Readers prioritizing first-party Google software may prefer Pixel Watch; Samsung offers a deeply integrated Android Wear OS ecosystem; Garmin is stronger for battery life and fitness depth; Apple Watch is the relevant alternative for iPhone users. Current model names, prices and availability require separate, up-to-date checks.
The Bottom Line
The Fossil Smartwatches app was primarily the software companion to Fossil’s Wear OS 3 transition. It unified supported Gen 6 and hybrid watches and made a future Fossil Wear OS product easier to imagine, but it never independently confirmed a Fossil Gen 7.
