The key to researching or buying one is its complete case reference: 7A38 models vary in case, dial, bracelet and parts, so a manual or component that suits one reference may not suit another.
Where the 7A38 fits in Seiko’s chronograph family
A specialist collector article describes the 7A38 as a day-and-date development of the 7A28 and places both in an early generation of analog quartz chronographs. That article reports the 7A28 appeared in 1983 and the 7A38 in 1984; those dates are secondary historical claims, not dates confirmed here against a Seiko archive. 7A38 vs. 7A28: the useful distinction
The clearest distinction established by the collector material is calendar display: it describes the 7A38 as the day-and-date counterpart to the 7A28. A 7A28 collector guide describes a multi-register chronograph with start, split and reset controls, and characterizes that movement as having 15 jewels and no plastic parts. Find the complete case reference before looking up a manual
Read the marking on the case back before searching for instructions, parts or a replacement crystal. Seiko’s guidance is to locate the caliber code on the case back and select the instructions for that caliber. The official instruction page also says Seiko began gradually discontinuing paper manuals in February 2024. A separately hosted 7A38 manual is listed by collector resources, but its text is not established here; use Seiko’s caliber lookup and confirm that the marking on your watch matches the instructions you choose. - Turn the watch over and locate the case-back marking.
- Record the full reference and caliber code rather than relying on “7A38” alone.
- Use Seiko’s instruction lookup for the caliber shown, then check that the document applies to your watch before operating the chronograph.
Parts compatibility: one documented crystal example
A collector specification for the 7A38-701B lists a crystal measuring 30 mm in diameter and 1.5 mm thick, and names Sternkreuz XMF300.860 as an aftermarket replacement option. This is a reference-specific example, not evidence that the crystal fits other 7A38 cases or remains available. The same 7A38-701B note says its original Z1118S bracelet can stretch. Treat that as a caution about the cited reference, not a claim about every 7A38 bracelet. Check whether the bracelet is original, whether it fits the case correctly and what condition it is in; a similar-looking bracelet may not establish originality or fit.

What to assess when comparing two 7A38 watches
- Reference: Compare the complete case references first; “7A38” alone does not identify the case or its compatible parts.
- Condition: Inspect the case and dial rather than assuming that watches sharing a caliber have the same design or condition.
- Bracelet or strap: Check originality, attachment and fit, and look for stretch or wear where relevant.
- Operation and service history: Ask whether the chronograph works and whether service history is documented. Follow the correct caliber instructions rather than inferring operating steps from a 7A28 guide.
- Parts prospects: Check for reference-compatible parts before purchase. Collector resources point to technical guides, a Seiko parts catalogue and case-parts lookup, but their mention does not establish that a part is currently available.
Current prices, repair costs, and general crystal or bracelet compatibility across other 7A38 references are not established by these sources. The collector history and parts information are secondary references; they should guide identification, not replace reference-specific verification.
