The Seiko 8M35 Yacht Timer carried forward the idea of timing a sailing start, but made the regatta countdown the watch’s main event. Its predecessor, the 7A28-7090, paired a conventional chronograph with a regatta-marked scale; the 8M35 added dedicated countdown modes and counterclockwise-running hands. Calling it a replacement is useful shorthand for that functional succession—not a documented formal announcement by Seiko.
How the 8M35 followed the 7A28-7090
Seiko’s earlier Yacht Timer was the 7A28-7090, part of the 7A28 chronograph family. A specialist Seiko timeline records the reference in catalogs from 1983 and says it disappeared after 1985. The 7A28-7090 used a familiar chronograph layout, including a 30-minute counter, with a regatta countdown scale incorporated into the dial. The later 8M35 shifted the emphasis: instead of treating the countdown as a scale alongside chronograph timing, it provided dedicated timer modes. Fratello describes the 8M35 as the earlier watch’s successor, but the sources do not establish that Seiko formally announced it as a direct replacement. Fratello’s 8M35 review
What the 8M35 countdown does
Regatta watches help a sailor track the interval before a race begins. The 8M35 offers preset countdowns of 5, 10, and 15 minutes, as well as a user-set timer adjustable in one-minute increments up to 30 minutes. In timer mode, its hands run counterclockwise as the countdown progresses. These operating details are reported by both Fratello’s review and the specialist Seiko timeline.

The crown selects the operating mode, while separate controls handle the timer operation, including starting, stopping, and resetting it. That gives the 8M35 a different interaction from the 7A28-7090’s more conventional chronograph controls: the countdown is selected and operated as a dedicated function rather than read primarily from a marked dial scale.
8M35 references and design variations
The 8M35 Yacht Timer family includes references 8M35-6000, 8M35-6010, 8M35-8000/8009, and 8M35-800A. The specialist history describes differences among models in cases, dials, and bezels, including steel and two-tone cases and plastic rotating bezels on some versions. Check the reference on the specific watch rather than assuming that every 8M35 shares the same finish or details.

The related 8M37 is another Yacht Timer-series movement, not simply another reference of the 8M35. The specialist history notes a different movement orientation, with the crown and pushers on the opposite side. It describes 8M35 and 8M37 models appearing from 1990 to 1993, but does not establish exact production dates for every reference or a precise end date for all 8M35 models.

A vintage watch’s original water-resistance rating is not evidence that it remains water-resistant today. Seals age, and condition varies by individual example; have a watch inspected and pressure-tested before exposing it to water.

What to check when buying or maintaining one
- Confirm the exact reference. Distinguish an 8M35-800A from an 8000/8009 or another family member, since case and bezel details vary.
- Test the functions. Ask the seller to demonstrate mode selection, the preset countdowns, the adjustable timer, and the start, stop, and reset controls.
- Assess condition and originality. Inspect the case, dial, bezel, hands, and controls, and ask what service work has been done.
- Request service and pressure-test records. Do not infer current water resistance from the rating printed or specified when the watch was new.
- Verify battery information before replacement. A specialist-hosted 8M35A technical guide lists an SR920W battery, but that detail is not cross-checked here against a Seiko 8M35 manual. Confirm the correct cell for the specific movement with a qualified watchmaker or reliable technical documentation before fitting one. 8M35A technical guide
- Check the seller’s terms. For a vintage watch, clarify return conditions and whether the stated functions have been tested on the actual watch being sold.
