Seiko lists both watches with a titanium case and bezel with super-hard coating. Their shared dimensions mean the SPB191J1 is not a smaller-case version of the SPB189J1; the difference lies chiefly in what comes fitted to the watch and the resulting listed weight. Which Shogun should you choose?
Choose the SPB189J1 if you want the titanium bracelet
The SPB189J1 is the straightforward choice if you prefer a bracelet from the outset. Its three-fold clasp has a secure lock, push-button release and extender, as listed by Seiko. The UK page price captured on October 4, 2026 was £1,410. That is a regional listed price, not a guarantee of today’s stock or transaction price.
Choose the SPB191J1 if you prefer silicone
The SPB191J1 is supplied with a silicone band and a three-fold clasp with secure lock. Seiko lists it at 99.0 g, compared with 121.0 g for the bracelet-equipped SPB189J1. The UK page price captured on October 4, 2026 was £1,150. Prices, availability and promotions vary by territory and date, so check local current listings.

The price difference in those UK page listings was £260. It does not establish the cost of buying one watch and changing its band, since no specific aftermarket bracelet or strap compatibility or price has been verified.
Shared movement, dimensions and diver specifications
Movement and power reserve
Both references use Seiko’s calibre 6R35, an automatic movement that can also be wound by hand. Seiko specifies approximately 70 hours of power reserve, 24 jewels and a stated precision range of +25 to −15 seconds per day. These are published specifications, not a timing result for any individual watch.

Case, crystal and controls
Each is listed at 43.5 mm in diameter, 51.0 mm lug-to-lug and 13.3 mm thick. Both have a sapphire crystal with a magnifier and anti-reflective coating on the inner surface, a unidirectional rotating bezel, a screw-down crown and a screw case back. Seiko also lists LumiBrite on the hands, indexes and bezel.
Water-resistance rating
Seiko rates both models at 200 m / 660 ft diver’s. This is the published rating; it does not establish the current water resistance of a used or unserviced watch. Condition and maintenance matter when assessing a particular example.

Band sizing and changing straps
Seiko lists a 22 mm lug distance for both models, which is a useful starting point when looking for another band. Nominal width alone does not confirm that a particular strap will fit well or that its hardware will work with the watch.
- Check the strap’s lug-end shape and thickness against the case clearance.
- Confirm spring-bar fit and the dimensions of any clasp or other hardware.
- Treat a 22 mm aftermarket option as unverified unless its maker confirms compatibility with the exact reference.
Seiko’s listed specifications identify the supplied bracelet for SPB189J1 and silicone band for SPB191J1; they do not establish an official Seiko aftermarket bracelet or third-party strap fitment.

What published reviews say about the Shogun
Yeoman’s Watch Review’s hands-on article, published December 17, 2020, describes the SPB189J1 and SPB191J1 as updates related to the earlier SBDC029, with changes to the dial, hands and bezel. Its author calls the magnifier “Unnecessary” and comments on the titanium weight; those are that reviewer’s impressions, not a universal assessment or an independent finding here.
