Its 42.6 mm case is substantial, but the review author found its proportions wearable rather than chunky. Those are the main reasons this premium reinterpretation stands out; whether it is worth its price depends on your market, fit and preference for this particular design.
What the Seiko Prospex SLA073 is
Seiko presents the SLA073 as a modern reinterpretation of its 1968 diver. That historical reference is distinct from Seiko’s first Japanese diver’s watch, introduced in 1965. The brand’s official account says the 1968 watch was a high-beat diver rated to 300 m, but that figure belongs to the historic model—not the SLA073. Seiko’s page discussing that heritage covers later SLA077 and SLA079 models, so it should not be read as the SLA073’s specification sheet. Seiko Boutique’s EU listing for the SLA073J1 gives a 13.05 mm thickness, while Fratello’s July 2023 hands-on review rounds it to 13.1 mm. The table uses the rounded figure. The boutique page displayed a €3,000 price and online availability when accessed in 2026; that is one regional listing, not a global price or a guarantee of current stock. Dial design and legibility
The dial is the SLA073’s most distinctive visual feature. Fratello describes a light-blue gradient and stamped texture intended to evoke a diver’s light illuminating an underwater cave. The inspiration is a design concept; it does not mean the watch was tested or certified specifically for cave diving.

Lume uses two colors: blue on most hour markers and on the hour and seconds hands, and green on the minute hand and bezel’s lume pip. That separation gives the minute hand and pip a different visual cue from the rest of the display. The bezel insert is steel with a hard coating, according to the review.
Movement and practical dive-watch details
The automatic 8L35 runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, has 26 jewels and is specified with a 50-hour power reserve. Fratello reports Seiko’s stated accuracy range as -10/+15 seconds per day. This is a manufacturer-stated range relayed by the reviewer, not an accuracy measurement from an independent test of the SLA073.

The watch is rated to 200 m water resistance and has a bracelet with a diver’s extension. Those are useful elements of its dive-watch configuration, but the cited review does not establish a particular dive test or certify suitability for a specialized activity beyond the stated water-resistance classification.
Case size, wrist fit and wearing impression
At 42.6 mm across, 49.6 mm lug-to-lug and about 13.1 mm thick, the SLA073 is not a small watch. Fratello’s Jorg Weppelink says it suited his 18.5 cm wrist and felt substantial without being chunky. That is one reviewer’s fit impression, not a sizing guarantee: wrist shape, bracelet fit and personal preference all affect how those dimensions wear.

Price and how to assess its value
Fratello gave the SLA073 a launch price of €3,000 in its July 2023 review, and Seiko Boutique EU’s listing displayed €3,000 when accessed in 2026. Prices and availability can differ across regions and change over time. The review compared it at the time with the €4,600 SLA055/SLA057 and the €1,300 SPB187; those are historical euro prices, not current quotations.
Weppelink attributed part of the price gap with the SLA055/SLA057 to their use of Ever-Brilliant Steel, while the SLA073 uses regular stainless steel. His favorable assessment of the SLA073’s movement and finishing—and his value judgment—are opinions from that review, not results of a controlled comparison.

- Local price and availability for the exact reference.
- Case diameter, thickness and lug-to-lug length against your wrist and fit preferences.
- Movement specifications and whether the stated accuracy range suits your expectations.
- Steel type and case finishing, where those distinctions matter to you.
- Dial color, lume layout and legibility in the conditions where you expect to wear it.
- Bracelet versus strap preference, including the clasp’s adjustment options.
- Water-resistance rating and whether it matches your intended use.
- How much you value the 1968-inspired styling compared with a smaller or less expensive alternative.
Who the SLA073 is for
The SLA073 makes the most sense for someone seeking a premium mechanical Seiko diver with a textured, gradient-blue dial, heritage styling and a steel bracelet. Its dimensions and price make fit and budget personal decision points, rather than universal strengths or weaknesses. The cited comparison with other Seiko models is limited and does not establish how it performs against watches from other brands.
