Yes—the Seiko Prospex SRP77x remains a credible automatic dive watch if you want real 200-meter dive construction, day/date practicality and the Turtle’s distinctive cushion case. The trade-offs are equally clear: the SRP777 is large at 45.0 mm, uses a Hardlex crystal rather than sapphire, and its exact fit and finishing depend on the reference you choose.
What the SRP77x is
The SRP77x is Seiko’s Prospex Turtle family of automatic divers. The current SRP777 specification lists a stainless-steel case, Seiko 4R36 automatic movement with manual winding, day/date display, approximately 41 hours of power reserve, 24 jewels, Hardlex crystal, LumiBrite hands and indexes, a unidirectional rotating bezel, screw-down crown, screw case back and 200 m / 660 ft diver’s water resistance (Seiko Watch Corporation, current product page accessed 2026).
That combination makes it a genuine recreational dive watch, not merely a dive-styled sports watch. The rating and construction are published specifications; they are not a substitute for checking a particular watch’s condition, seals or service history before actual diving.

How large does the Turtle wear?
On paper, 45.0 mm is a substantial watch, and 13.4 mm of thickness will be noticeable under a cuff. The Turtle’s cushion-shaped case changes the impression compared with a conventional round 45 mm case: its broad shoulders and curved profile distribute visual mass differently, while the 22 mm lug distance keeps strap proportions conventional for a large diver.

That is a case-shape and lug-span consideration, not a universal comfort guarantee. Wrist circumference, wrist shape, strap stiffness and tolerance for thickness will determine whether it feels balanced. Try the exact reference on your wrist whenever possible. A historical SRP775 review reports approximately 44.3 mm diameter, 14 mm thickness and 22 mm lugs, so those figures should not be substituted for the current SRP777 measurements.
Is the SRP777 a real dive watch?
Yes. Seiko specifies 200 m / 660 ft diver’s water resistance, a screw-down crown and case back, and a unidirectional bezel. The one-way bezel is designed so accidental movement can only reduce the indicated remaining time, an essential dive-watch safety principle. LumiBrite hands and indexes provide the intended low-light legibility feature.

- 4R36 CALIBER: equipped with the reliable 4R36 caliber, these precise men’s wrist watches ensure the most accurate timekeeping
These specifications establish the watch’s design and rating. They do not document a controlled depth test, bezel-action test or lume-duration measurement for this review. Before diving, have water resistance checked at appropriate service intervals and inspect the crown, crystal, bezel and seals.
What movement is inside the Seiko Turtle?
The SRP777 uses Seiko’s 4R36 automatic movement. It winds from wrist motion and also supports manual winding, with a day/date display and approximately 41 hours of power reserve. The movement’s practical advantage is flexibility: you can restart a stopped watch by hand instead of shaking it, and the day/date complication is useful for daily wear.

The published specification does not establish a particular accuracy result for an individual watch. Regulation, magnetism, position and service condition can all affect timing, so do not treat the power-reserve figure as an accuracy promise.
Hardlex versus sapphire
Hardlex is the specified crystal on the SRP777. It is not sapphire. Hardlex keeps the watch aligned with the standard Turtle specification, but sapphire is generally more scratch-resistant in everyday use. That general material distinction is not a laboratory durability result for this model.

Some King Turtle and special-edition references use different crystals or other upgraded details. Confirm the exact suffix and specification sheet before assuming a Turtle has sapphire.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which Seiko Turtle should you get?
Choose the standard SRP777 when
- You want the classic Turtle case with the documented 4R36 movement, day/date display and 200 m diver’s rating.
- You accept Hardlex and prefer the standard configuration rather than paying for an upgraded variant.
- You need a broad choice of 22 mm straps or bracelets.
Consider another SRP77x reference when
- You prefer a different dial, bezel, bracelet or strap design.
- You need to verify a particular crystal material or case dimension.
- You are comparing a historical reference such as SRP775, whose published dimensions differ from SRP777.
Family branding is not enough to identify equipment. Check the complete reference number, because dial, bezel, bracelet or strap, crystal and dimensions can vary.

Strengths and limitations
What it does well on paper
- Purpose-built 200 m diver’s construction with a screw-down crown, screw back and unidirectional bezel.
- Automatic 4R36 movement with manual winding and a useful day/date display.
- LumiBrite hands and indexes for the expected low-light legibility.
- Distinctive cushion-case design rather than another generic round diver.
What to think about before buying
- 45.0 mm diameter can be intimidating, and fit depends heavily on wrist shape and the cushion geometry.
- Hardlex is more vulnerable to scratches than sapphire in general use.
- Bracelet, strap quality, bezel feel and real-world comfort require inspection of the exact watch; no hands-on test establishes those traits here.
- Retail pricing, availability and listings change, so verify the seller, reference, warranty and current price at purchase.
Bottom line: is the Seiko Turtle still worth buying?
The SRP77x is still worth buying for readers who specifically want the Turtle’s shape and a straightforward automatic diver with real 200 m specifications. Its strongest case is functional: 4R36 manual-winding convenience, day/date usability, strong lume provision and proven dive-watch architecture. Skip it or try it on first if 45 mm is outside your comfort zone, if scratch resistance is a priority, or if you expect premium bezel and bracelet refinement without checking the individual reference.
An independent 2026 review by Lug & Leather states: “We do not own this watch and we did not test it.” The assessment here likewise rests on Seiko’s published specifications and clearly identified reference differences, not on a controlled accuracy, depth, lume or long-term durability test.
