The Seiko Prospex SRPC44 is the “Golden Turtle”: a gold-tone take on Seiko’s recognizable Turtle diver, with an automatic 4R36 movement, dark sunburst dial, rubber strap and a 200-meter water-resistance rating reported by hands-on reviewers. Its appeal is the same thing that limits it: it is a conspicuous, substantial watch rather than a discreet everyday diver. Fit, the condition of a used example and the unconfirmed details of its gold finish deserve as much attention as its headline specs.
What is the Seiko Prospex SRPC44?
The SRPC44 is a gold-tone version of Seiko’s Prospex Turtle diver, commonly nicknamed the Golden Turtle. Hodinkee and Worn & Wound describe a stainless-steel case with gold-tone treatment, a dark grey or anthracite sunburst dial, gold-edged markers and a dark rubber strap. The result is deliberately more eye-catching than a conventional steel dive watch. These details come from hands-on reviews; an exact official Seiko SRPC44 specification page was not located.
Hodinkee called the look brash and fun, while also noting that the Turtle’s broad, squared-off footprint can wear more compactly than its width suggests. That is a useful distinction: the watch can feel visually bold without necessarily spanning the wrist like a straight-sided case of the same diameter.
How big does the Golden Turtle wear?
The reviewer measurements agree on a 44.3 mm case width but differ on other dimensions and conventions. Hodinkee reported a 13.3 mm thickness and 47.25 mm lug-to-lug; Worn & Wound listed 44.3 x 48 mm and 14 mm thick. Both accounts describe a substantial case, but the curvature and shape affect how it sits, so diameter alone does not settle fit.

| Measurement or feature | Hodinkee (2018) | Worn & Wound (2018) |
|---|---|---|
| Case width | 44.3 mm | 44.3 mm |
| Other case dimensions | 13.3 mm thick; 47.25 mm lug-to-lug | 48 mm dimension; 14 mm thick |
| Lug width | Not stated by Hodinkee | 22 mm |
| Water resistance | 200 m | 200 m |
When judging fit, consider lug-to-lug length, thickness, the rubber strap’s comfort and how much visual presence you want—not only your wrist circumference or the 44.3 mm width. The cited reviews suggest that the case shape wears more compactly than its width might imply, but that is a wearer-dependent impression, not a universal fit guarantee.
What movement is in the SRPC44?
The hands-on reviews identify Seiko’s automatic 4R36 movement. Hodinkee reports day and date displays, hacking (the seconds hand stops when setting the time) and hand-winding. Worn & Wound also identifies the 4R36. Seiko publishes operating instructions for the 4R35/4R36 movement family; consult those for winding, setting and care rather than assuming that a movement name tells you how a particular used watch has been maintained.

Is the Seiko SRPC44 good for diving?
Hodinkee and Worn & Wound both report a 200-meter water-resistance rating. Seiko’s official guidance lists a 200 m diver’s watch as suitable for scuba diving, but not saturation diving. The rating describes the watch when its seals and construction are in suitable condition; it does not certify the current water resistance of an older or pre-owned example.

Seiko warns that “A watch’s water resistance is not permanently guaranteed.” Aging gaskets or deformation after an impact can reduce resistance. Before taking a used SRPC44 into water, ask for evidence of a recent water-resistance test and have its condition assessed by a qualified watch professional if that history is unknown. Seiko’s water-resistance guidance explains its ratings and limitations.
Is the SRPC44 gold plated?
The cited reviews describe the case as gold-tone over steel, but the exact surface treatment is not confirmed. Hodinkee reports that Seiko could not identify the precise treatment; its suggestion that the finish might be PVD is not confirmation. It is therefore more accurate to call the SRPC44 gold-tone than to state that it is PVD-coated or gold-plated.

For a pre-owned watch, inspect the case and buckle closely for wear, scratches or uneven color. The finish’s exact composition and the condition of an individual example are separate questions; the model description alone cannot answer either one fully.

The SRPC44 is most compelling if you want a recognizable diver with a bold gold-tone look. If you prefer a quiet, versatile watch, that same finish and the large case may be drawbacks. Since current listings and the condition of any specific example can change, assess the watch and seller rather than relying on an old review price.

- Verify the exact model. Compare the reference and details in the listing with reliable photographs and documentation; do not treat a similar-looking Turtle as proof that it is an SRPC44.
- Assess condition. Request clear photographs of the case, bezel, crystal, strap, buckle and case back. Look for finish wear, damage and signs of rough handling.
- Ask about water-resistance testing and service. A 200 m rating on paper does not establish that a particular older watch remains water resistant.
- Check what is included. Confirm the strap, box, papers and accessories actually offered, and whether the seller’s description matches the photographs.
- Evaluate the seller and price. Review seller reputation, return terms and authenticity information, and compare current listings of similar condition rather than assuming a published estimate is a guaranteed resale value.
Published price references are snapshots, not live offers. WatchCharts listed a secondary-market estimate of $470 dated September 23, 2026, and a historical authorized-dealer retail price of $525 as of July 2021. Worn & Wound’s 2018 review displayed $394. These figures refer to different dates and kinds of prices, so they are not directly interchangeable or a promise of what a buyer will pay today.
Can you change the strap?
Worn & Wound reports a 22 mm lug width, making alternate straps a plausible option. Nominal width alone does not establish that a particular strap will fit: check the attachment geometry and buckle compatibility before purchasing one. The cited reporting does not verify any specific aftermarket strap or its current availability.
Who should consider the Golden Turtle?
Consider the SRPC44 if you like the Turtle’s substantial shape, want the day/date and hand-winding functions reported for the 4R36, and enjoy a bright gold-tone design. Look elsewhere if you need a discreet diver, are uncomfortable with a large case, or want a finish treatment that can be stated with certainty from the available model-specific reporting. For any used example intended for swimming or diving, its actual tested condition matters more than its original rating.
