Kim Jong Un’s watch cannot tell us how long he will live. Photos can support a tentative identification of the watch and invite speculation about its fit, but they cannot diagnose him or predict his lifespan. Its stronger political significance is as a visible example of elite access to luxury goods in North Korea, where such goods have been reported as rewards for favored officials despite sanctions.
Which watch does Kim Jong Un appear to wear?
In photos released by the Kremlin during Kim’s Beijing trip, NK News reported on September 4, 2025, that he appeared to be wearing an IWC Schaffhausen Portofino Automatic. That is a visual identification, not confirmation of the watch’s authenticity, ownership history or route into North Korea. The Korea Times also summarized the identification and reported that Kim had been seen wearing the model in recent years, but that coverage is not an independent authentication.
NK News described the case material and price conditionally—“if original”—and reported a manufacturer retail price of $14,100 at the time of its 2025 article. That is a dated figure, not a current price or evidence of what Kim paid.
Does the watchband show that Kim lost weight?
No reliable health conclusion follows from a watchband looking tighter in a photograph. A photo does not establish the strap setting, wrist angle, camera perspective or whether the watch is sitting in the same position as in another image. Even a genuine change in how a watch fits would not, on its own, reveal its cause or amount.

The visual clue has fueled speculation before. In June 2021, Yonhap reported claims that Kim had lost significant weight based in part on his watch appearing more tightly fastened at a politburo session. A South Korean Unification Ministry official said the ministry had nothing to say about his health based on those reports. The episode illustrates the gap between noticing a change in an image and establishing a medical fact.
What do the latest reported health assessments say?
In a report dated September 30, 2026, KBS World relayed lawmakers’ account of a closed-door National Intelligence Service briefing. The NIS assessment, as reported, placed Kim in the 140-kilogram range and described him as at high risk of cardiovascular disease due to severe obesity. The same report said the agency saw no signs of poor health.

This is an intelligence assessment conveyed through lawmakers and a public broadcaster, not a disclosed clinical examination or medical record. The two reported findings should not be collapsed into either “Kim is healthy” or “Kim is about to die”: a risk factor is not an individual prognosis. None of the cited reports provides an estimate of his lifespan.
How strong is each kind of evidence?
| Evidence type | What it can support | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Watch photographs and apparent band fit | A tentative visual identification or an observation that the watch appears to fit differently. | A diagnosis, the cause or scale of weight change, or a lifespan estimate. |
| Intelligence reporting relayed by lawmakers and news outlets | Indirect reporting of an agency’s assessment, such as the 2026 account of weight range and cardiovascular risk. | A public clinical record or a precise individual prognosis. |
| Public medical records | Clinical information, if available and authentic. | They are not present in the cited reporting used here. |
What does a luxury watch mean in North Korea’s political context?
The watch is more revealing as a symbol of elite consumption than as a health instrument. A 2023 South Korean ministry assessment, reported by Yonhap, said luxury goods continued to enter North Korea despite the 2006 UN Security Council ban on luxury-goods exports. The assessment drew on South Korean intelligence and defector sources; the ministry also noted that precise figures were difficult to obtain. It described luxury items—including cars and Swiss watches—as gifts used by the ruling family to reward favored officials.

That account gives the watch a plausible place in a broader story about status and patronage, as well as the contrast between North Korea’s anti-capitalist messaging and the ruling family’s access to prestigious foreign goods. It does not establish how this particular watch reached Kim, who supplied it, or that this specific item proves a sanctions violation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does concern about Kim’s health make succession imminent?
Health reporting matters to regional politics because questions about leadership continuity can affect how governments assess North Korea. But succession coverage does not turn a watch photo into evidence of an imminent transition.

In July 2024, Yonhap reported lawmakers’ account of an NIS assessment that Kim’s daughter Ju-ae was being groomed as a successor and was a strong candidate, while the selection was not final and another choice remained possible. The Associated Press had reported in January 2024 that South Korea viewed her as a likely heir but that the NIS still considered other possibilities. AP also noted that North Korea had not publicly confirmed a succession plan and that the NIS had a spotty record in confirming developments inside the country. These are dated intelligence assessments reported indirectly, not a confirmed North Korean decision.
AP quoted analyst Cheong Seong-Chang describing Ju-ae’s appearances with her father as a way she could be “learning kingship and building a human network.” That was the analyst’s interpretation of her public role, not proof that succession had been decided.
