The Seiko Prospex SLA017 is a 2017 limited-edition re-creation of Seiko’s 1965 first diver, now commonly known as the 62MAS. It retains the original’s design cues but enlarges the case and updates key specifications, including a 200 m diver’s rating and box-shaped sapphire crystal. Seiko’s published specifications establish what the watch is; they do not establish how it wears or performs in practice, so this guide sticks to documented facts rather than claiming personal hands-on impressions.
What is the Seiko SLA017?
Seiko introduced the SLA017 as its “First Diver’s Re-creation Limited Edition.” The company says the case is virtually identical to the 1965 original, with its diameter increased by 1.9 mm, and that designer Nobuhiro Kosugi oversaw the redesign. The original watch is widely called the 62MAS; Seiko used that name for a later re-creation in 2023.
Seiko says its first diver’s watch was made in 1965. It also says the model was used by the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition from 1966 to 1969. Seiko specified 150 m water resistance for the original. Seiko’s March 23, 2017 announcement is the source for the SLA017’s identity and the historical details above.

SLA017 vs. the original 62MAS
The SLA017 is a re-creation rather than a dimension-for-dimension replica. Seiko describes its case as virtually identical in design while specifying a 1.9 mm increase in diameter. The original was rated to 150 m; the re-creation is rated to 200 m diver’s. The SLA017 also uses box-shaped sapphire, whereas the 2017 release identifies sapphire as a feature of the re-creation rather than establishing the original’s crystal specification.
The historical model is commonly identified with the 6217-8000/1 reference family. Seiko’s 2017 announcement is the source for the original’s 150 m rating and the SLA017’s 1.9 mm increase, along with the expedition history.

How the SLA017 compares with the 2023 SJE093
The SJE093 is another 62MAS re-creation, not a stated successor or replacement for the SLA017. Seiko’s 2023 announcement says its design and dimensions are virtually identical to the original. The published specifications show a smaller, thinner case and a different movement:
| Specification | SLA017 (2017) | SJE093 (2023) |
|---|---|---|
| Case dimensions | 39.9 × 14.1 mm | 38.0 × 12.5 mm |

| Power reserve | 50 hours | 45 hours |
| Edition size | 2,000 pieces | 1,965 pieces |
| Crystal | Box-shaped sapphire with anti-reflective coating (Seiko, 2017) | Not stated in the cited Seiko 2023 announcement |
| Water-resistance rating | 200 m diver’s (Seiko, 2017) | Not stated in the cited Seiko 2023 announcement |
| Included strap or bracelet | Silicone strap; steel bracelet included (Seiko, 2017) | Not stated in the cited Seiko 2023 announcement |
For the SJE093’s dimensions, movement, reserve, edition size, and relationship to the original, see Seiko’s 2023 announcement. The comparison is limited to the specifications stated in the cited announcements; it does not imply that the models are interchangeable or that one is a direct update of the other.

What the published facts do—and do not—tell you
The specifications establish the SLA017’s dimensions, movement, materials and construction details, water-resistance rating, supplied strap and bracelet, and limited production. They cannot by themselves establish wrist fit, perceived thickness, finishing impressions, timekeeping accuracy in use, or the condition and authenticity of any particular watch offered for sale. Those questions require direct assessment of the individual watch and its documentation.
Because Seiko announced a 2,000-piece edition in 2017, the SLA017 should be treated as a past limited release, not as a model known to remain in production. The launch price is not evidence of today’s asking price, transaction value, or condition-adjusted market worth.
