The Seiko SilverWave J12082 is best described as an early Seiko dive-intended watch, not Seiko’s officially recognized first Japanese diver’s watch. A specialist review dates it to 1961–1964 and reports a 50 m rating with a crown-operated internal rotating bezel. Seiko’s official history and Seiko Museum Ginza identify a different watch—the 150 m model introduced in 1965—as Japan’s first diver’s watch.

What does “Seiko’s first diver” mean?

The phrase depends on what counts as a diver’s watch. In a 2019 specialist review, the J12082 is presented as Seiko’s first attempt at a dive watch and as an early dive-intended model with a rotating bezel. That makes it a meaningful predecessor, but not the model Seiko officially identifies as Japan’s first diver’s watch.

Seiko Museum Ginza labels its 1965 exhibit “First Japanese Diver’s watch.” The museum describes that watch as Japan’s first domestically made diver’s watch, waterproof to 150 meters, fitted with a double-packing winding crown, and designated for use by the 8th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition. Seiko’s corporate timeline also places its first Japanese 150 m diver in 1965.

What is the SilverWave J12082?

The J12082 is a vintage automatic model whose distinctive feature is an internal dive bezel turned through the crown rather than an external bezel. The specifications below are those reported in Michael Stockton’s 2019 Fratello Watches review, not a current Seiko service specification.

  • Case: stainless steel, 37 mm diameter and approximately 44 mm long; 18 mm lug width.
  • Crystal: acrylic.
  • Case back: two-piece screw-down design.
  • Movement: Seiko Cal. 603 automatic, 20 jewels, beating at 18,000 beats per hour.
  • Water resistance: 50 m as reported for the model.
  • Bezel: bidirectional internal dive bezel operated by the crown.
  • Original bracelet: the review says the watch originally came on a stainless-steel bracelet.

The review describes a large ridged crown, applied silver markers with lume on their inner edges, and triangular hands. The dial combines different scripts and blue water-resistance text. On the case back, a tsunami motif appears—an early use of a symbol later associated with Seiko divers, according to the reviewer. The motif can be delicate, so the condition of the case back matters when assessing an example.

How did the J12082 change during production?

The specialist review dates the production run to 1961–1964 and reports several dial variants: black, white or silver, and a starburst version referred to as “Mark 1.” It also notes changes to dial fonts and internal-bezel colors. The reviewer says other external features and the movement stayed consistent through the four-year run; these variant details come from that specialist account rather than an official Seiko catalog record.

What should a buyer check on a surviving example?

A historical 50 m rating does not establish the water resistance of a particular watch today. The reviewer notes age-related deterioration of crown seals, possible dial staining, scarce original crystals, and the risk of damage to an internal bezel that no longer rotates. Some examples may not run; the review describes the movement as serviceable, but that does not establish the condition of any individual watch.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Operation: Have a watchmaker assess timekeeping, winding, and the movement’s service history.
  • Water resistance: Ask for the seals and crown to be evaluated and for any pressure test to be performed by a qualified watchmaker. Do not swim with the watch based only on its original rating.
  • Internal bezel: Confirm that it turns correctly through the crown and that the mechanism is not damaged or sticking.
  • Dial, hands, and crystal: Check for moisture evidence, staining, damage, and signs of replacement. The reviewer says original crystals are rarely available.
  • Case and case back: Inspect the screw-down back and the condition of the tsunami motif, which the reviewer describes as delicate.
  • Originality and documentation: Ask what parts have been replaced and request service records where available.

For a watch confirmed to have the reported 18 mm lug width, an 18 mm strap may be a replacement option; measure the individual watch rather than assuming every example or configuration is identical.

What is a J12082 worth?

Fratello Watches gave a price estimate of “$500 – 1000” in its article published on 26 April 2019. That is a dated estimate, not a current valuation. Current asking prices and completed-sale data are not established here, and condition, originality, and documented service can make a substantial difference between individual vintage watches.

What is established—and what is not

The J12082’s significance is its early place in Seiko’s dive-watch story: the specialist review places it before the 1965 milestone and describes a practical, crown-operated internal bezel. The sources cited here do not establish a production total, survival rate, or current market dataset for the model. The official “first Japanese diver’s watch” designation belongs to the 1965 150 m watch.
