The Sinn U15, U16 and U18 are three separate 1,000-piece automatic dive-watch editions whose cases contain steel recovered from the decommissioned German Navy Type 206 submarines sharing their names. The 41 mm U15 is the compact 500 m model, the 44 mm U16 reaches 1,000 m, and the U18 is the thickest and deepest-rated model in launch coverage at 2,000 m.
What makes the steel genuinely “submarine” steel?
Sinn’s catalogue describes these watches as “Made of steel from the like-named U 15, U 16 and U 18 type 206 submarines.” This is more specific than using a newly produced alloy designed to meet submarine specifications: the material is presented as steel that served for decades in the named vessels.
Sinn’s standard U-series submarine steel is a special grade developed by ThyssenKrupp for Type 206 and Type 212 outer hulls. For the U15, U16 and U18 anniversary editions, the official product material describes “high-strength, seawater-resistant German Submarine Steel from the decommissioned U 15 and U 16 submarines.” Each watch therefore has a direct material connection to its namesake boat, rather than only a naval-themed design.

Which model is smallest, deepest or easiest to wear?
U15: the compact choice
At 41 mm wide and 11.2 mm thick, the U15 is the least imposing of the three. Its 500 m rating is already far beyond ordinary recreational-diving requirements, making it the natural choice if case size and everyday wear matter more than maximum rating. It uses the Sellita SW300-1 and has the longest stated reserve among the two U15/U16 launch specifications at 56 hours.
U16: larger case, 1,000 m capability
The U16 expands to 44 mm and 14.7 mm thick, with a 1,000 m rating. Its Sellita SW200-1 is listed with a 38-hour reserve and 26 jewels. The additional diameter and depth rating make it the most overtly tool-watch-like option, but also the largest on the wrist.

U18: deepest rating and thickest profile
The U18 keeps the 41 mm diameter of the U15 but measures 15.5 mm thick. Launch coverage rates it to 2,000 m, the highest figure associated with this trio, and lists a Sellita SW200-1 with a 56-hour reserve and 25 jewels. Its compact diameter does not make it slim: the U18’s height is greater than either sibling’s, so wrist clearance and cuff fit deserve attention.
Shared diver design
All three watches use dark-blue bubble-pattern dials, luminous hands and markers, sapphire crystals with anti-reflective treatment, steel H-link bracelets and captive rotating dive bezels. They are automatic mechanical divers rather than quartz instruments. The common design language links the editions, while the dimensions, movement specification and depth rating create meaningful differences between them.

Prices, availability and what to verify
Launch coverage reported €2,990 for both the U15 and U16, and €3,230 for the U18. Later Japanese Sinn retailer pages listed the U16 at ¥814,000 and the U18 at ¥880,000. A separate regional search result showed the U15 as sold out.
Those figures are observations tied to particular markets and dates, not a universal current price or proof that any edition remains available. Are these interchangeable watches?
No. All three share the recovered Type 206 steel concept, 1,000-piece production run and blue-dial diver format, but they serve different priorities. Compare the actual case dimensions, stated depth rating, movement and reserve, wrist fit, price and the provenance appeal of owning steel associated with the corresponding submarine. The U15 is the most compact; the U16 is the broadest; and the U18 offers the greatest reported depth rating while being unusually thick for its diameter.
The Bottom Line
The U15, U16 and U18 are distinct limited-edition Sinn divers made with steel from their namesake Type 206 submarines. U15 prioritizes compact wear, U16 combines a 44 mm case with 1,000 m resistance, and U18 delivers the deepest reported rating at 2,000 m in the thickest case.
