Can you buy smart earrings yet? Not the University of Washington’s Thermal Earring. As of August 18, 2026, smart earrings remain an active research direction rather than an established consumer category. The prototype continuously measures earlobe skin temperature, but the university has announced no price, retail partner, launch date or regulatory clearance. Its results are interesting enough to suggest a new sensor location—not a replacement for your smartwatch or smart ring.
What a smart earring actually is
A smart earring is jewelry-shaped hardware containing sensors, wireless communication and a power source. It is different from wireless earbuds, illuminated fashion jewelry, Bluetooth earrings used only for audio, ordinary jewelry linked to an app, and hearing or assistive devices.
The University of Washington’s Thermal Earring places one temperature sensor against the earlobe and a second sensor below the ear to estimate ambient temperature. A Bluetooth chip, antenna, battery and supporting electronics fit into the prototype. Resin decoration or a gemstone can disguise the circuit board.
The device measures earlobe skin temperature, not core body temperature. That distinction matters: a skin-temperature trend is not interchangeable with a clinical thermometer reading.

What the Thermal Earring demonstrated
The university described the prototype in its February 7, 2024 announcement, while the underlying paper was reported as published January 12, 2024. In a small resting test, six users wore the earring while it was compared with a smartwatch.
| Measure | Reported result | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature variation | 0.58°F (0.32°C) for the earring | Average variation in the six-user resting test |
| Smartwatch variation | 0.72°C | Comparison from the same university announcement |
| Prototype battery | 28 days | Reported prototype figure, not a consumer-product guarantee |
| Size and weight | About a small paperclip | Prototype description |
| Wireless method | Bluetooth advertising mode | Used with deep sleep to reduce energy use |
The university also explored temperature signals associated with eating, exercise, stress and fever. In a preliminary comparison, five people with fever had average earlobe temperatures 10.62°F (5.92°C) higher than those of 20 healthy people. That sample is too small to establish diagnostic accuracy or make the earring a substitute for a thermometer.
The university says the observed temperature variation fell within a range considered useful for ovulation and period-tracking applications. This does not mean the prototype reliably predicts ovulation, diagnoses a condition or has medical-device clearance. The evidence is limited to a small research study under specified conditions.

Why measure at the ear?
The earlobe is an accessible, relatively stable place to attach a lightweight sensor. The second, dangling sensor is important because it samples the surrounding air; software can use that information to distinguish changes in skin temperature from changes in room conditions.
That arrangement may reduce some noise compared with a single wrist sensor, but the study does not show that every ear-based device will outperform every smartwatch. Movement, contact pressure, earlobe thickness, hair and rapidly changing outdoor temperatures can all affect readings.

Earrings also leave the wrist free for a traditional watch and may appeal to people who dislike visibly technical devices. The research team has described a broader jewelry system in which earrings monitor temperature and heart rate while a necklace collects electrocardiogram data. That is a future design direction, not a product specification.
What smart earrings might eventually track
Temperature and wellness trends
Long-term personal temperature baselines could contribute to wellness monitoring when combined with other signals. The useful output would likely be a trend or change from baseline, not a single definitive number.
Menstrual-cycle and ovulation support
Temperature patterns may contribute to cycle-tracking algorithms, but dependable fertility features require validated models, consistent wear and clear limits. Temperature alone cannot confirm ovulation for every user.

Fever-related alerts
The small fever comparison is a reason for further study, not evidence that a smart earring can diagnose fever. A medical claim would require larger, diverse validation against accepted clinical measurements.
Stress, eating and exercise
Proof-of-concept observations are not the same as reliable classification. A consumer algorithm would need substantially more data across ages, skin tones, climates, activities and health conditions before it could label these events with confidence.

Why a research prototype is not ready for stores
Battery and charging
The reported 28-day life is notable, but commercial endurance would depend on sampling rate, Bluetooth behavior, battery capacity, sensor count, temperature and software processing. Displays, lights or haptics would consume more power. A buyer would also need a practical charging method and protection against losing a tiny accessory.
Comfort and mechanical reliability
Continuous monitoring raises basic questions: can people sleep in the earring, shower or exercise with it, and wear it without pulling on the lobe? A dangling sensor could catch on hair or clothing, swing during movement or touch the wrong surface. Removing it for several hours creates missing data.
Materials and fit
A retail design would need to address nickel sensitivity, sweat, moisture, piercings, different earlobe shapes and prolonged skin contact. Decorative covers must not change thermal behavior or sensor placement. Water resistance cannot be inferred from ordinary jewelry construction.
Validation, privacy and support
The six-person resting study cannot establish performance for broad populations or active daily life. Future buyers should ask how accuracy was tested, whether one earring or two are required, what data leaves the device over Bluetooth, where it is stored, how deletion works, whether iPhone and Android are supported, and what happens if the app or cloud service ends.

| Device | Strengths | Limitations | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smartwatch | Mature category; screen, notifications, GPS, emergency tools, fitness and phone integration | Wrist temperature can be noisy; some users find watches bulky; charging is more frequent than the prototype claim | Broad health, fitness and phone features |
| Smart ring | Discreet, screen-free and generally suited to overnight passive tracking | Fit and sizing are critical; may be removed for lifting, manual work or swelling; limited physical space | Sleep, recovery and wellness trends |
| Smart earring | Direct earlobe access, jewelry-like appearance and a possible complementary sensor location | No established market; unresolved sleep comfort, durability, water resistance, fit, privacy and validation | Potentially temperature-focused monitoring alongside another wearable |
The strongest case for an earring is complementarity. It could measure something useful at the ear while a watch handles notifications and exercise or a ring handles overnight tracking. There is no evidence that it is better than smart rings generally.

Can you buy a smart earring now?
No verified commercial Thermal Earring product was identified in the available sources. The University of Washington described it as a prototype that was not commercially available. The university announcement contains no retail channel, price, launch date or regulatory clearance. The “on the way” wording in early coverage is therefore forward-looking, not a confirmed 2026 release.
If you want a wearable today, choose according to the job rather than the novelty:
- For discreet passive sleep and wellness tracking: consider an established smart ring such as Oura Ring, checking current compatibility, return terms and any subscription requirements.
- For broad health, fitness, notifications and emergency features: consider Apple Watch if you use a compatible iPhone.
- For mainstream fitness and wellness tracking: review current Fitbit trackers and watches.
None of these alternatives is an earlobe sensor, and none should be presented as the Thermal Earring. Prices, plans and feature availability change, so verify them with the manufacturer before buying.
Verdict
Smart earrings are a credible research concept built around a potentially useful sensing location. The Thermal Earring showed lower temperature variation than a smartwatch in a six-person resting test and reported a 28-day prototype battery, but it remains small-scale research. For now, treat smart earrings as a possible addition to watches and rings—not a product you can reliably purchase or a medical device you can use for diagnosis.
