Buy AirPods Pro 3 if you are buying new at roughly the same price, need stronger noise cancellation, longer single-charge battery life, a different fit, higher water and dust resistance, or workout heart-rate tracking. Keep AirPods Pro 2 if they still fit well, last long enough, and cancel noise effectively. Pro 3 is a meaningful hardware refinement, not a wholesale platform change: both generations use Apple’s H2 chip, and many headline software features now work on Pro 2 as well.
As of August 18, 2026, Apple lists AirPods Pro 3 at $249 in the United States. Pro 2 is mainly a third-party and remaining-inventory purchase, so the real decision depends on the current price gap, your existing earbuds, and which problem you are trying to solve.

What Pro 3 actually improves
Noise cancellation is the largest audible upgrade
Apple says Pro 3 delivers “up to 1.5× more Active Noise Cancellation than the previous generation.” That is a maximum comparative claim under Apple’s test method, not a promise that every sound will be reduced by 50 percent. Independent comparisons have found Pro 3 particularly stronger against low-frequency sounds such as aircraft rumble, while the overall difference varies with ear anatomy, tip choice, firmware and the test environment. #1 Best Overall
- WORLD’S BEST IN-EAR ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Removes up to 2x more unwanted noise than AirPods Pro 2* so you can stay fully immersed in the moment.*
- BREAKTHROUGH AUDIO PERFORMANCE — Experience breathtaking, three-dimensional audio with AirPods Pro 3. A new acoustic architecture delivers transformed bass, detailed clarity so you can hear every instrument, and stunningly vivid vocals.
- HEART RATE SENSING — Built-in heart rate sensing lets you track your heart rate and calories burned for up to 50 different workout types.* With iPhone, you will have access to the Move ring, step count, and the new Workout Buddy,* powered by Apple Intelligence.*
- LIVE TRANSLATION — Communicate across language barriers using Live Translation,* enabled by Apple Intelligence.*
- EXTENDED BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 8 hours of listening time with Active Noise Cancellation on a single charge. Or up to 10 hours in Transparency using the Hearing Aid feature.*
Frequent flyers, commuters and people working beside machinery are most likely to notice the change. If your Pro 2 already makes planes, trains and offices quiet enough, the improvement may not justify replacement.
The redesigned fit can matter more than the electronics
Pro 3 changes the earbud body, acoustic venting and case design, and adds an XXS tip for a five-size range. A smaller tip can reduce pressure for users who found Pro 2 tips too large; a different seal can also alter bass, clarity, Transparency mode and ANC performance. That does not make Pro 3 universally more comfortable. Some ears may prefer the Pro 2 shape.
- Run Apple’s Ear Tip Fit Test.
- Wear both earbuds while walking, talking and chewing.
- Try Transparency mode as well as ANC.
- Exercise long enough to see whether either earbud loosens.
- Clean and maintain the earbuds according to Apple’s cleaning guidance.
Do not judge the seal solely by whether the housing sits flush. A visible edge does not automatically mean poor isolation.
Battery life improves between charges, but not in total case endurance
Apple rates Pro 3 for up to eight hours with ANC, versus up to six hours for Pro 2. With workout heart-rate sensing enabled, Pro 3 is rated for up to 6.5 hours. Five minutes of charging provides about an hour of Pro 3 listening under Apple’s stated conditions.

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
The case reverses the headline: Pro 3 is rated for up to 24 hours of ANC listening with the case, while Pro 2 is rated for up to 30 hours. In other words, Pro 3 is better for a long uninterrupted session; Pro 2 can provide more total listening before the case itself needs charging. Volume, calls, Spatial Audio, temperature, software and battery health change real-world results.
IP57 makes Pro 3 more practical outdoors
Pro 3’s earbuds and case carry an IP57 dust, sweat and water-resistance rating. The USB-C Pro 2 version is IP54. Resistance can decline with wear, and neither rating permits swimming or deliberate submersion. Never charge wet earbuds or a wet case. This upgrade is most useful to runners, travelers and people who regularly work outdoors.
Heart-rate sensing is genuinely new hardware
Pro 3 includes a workout heart-rate sensor. With an iPhone running iOS 26 or later, Apple’s Fitness app and compatible third-party apps can use it for heart rate, calories, steps, distance and supported workout types. Apple rates battery life at up to 6.5 hours when this sensing is active.
This is valuable if you exercise with an iPhone and do not wear an Apple Watch. It is less compelling if your Watch already supplies dependable workout tracking, and it is irrelevant if you do not use fitness apps. It is not a medical device or a replacement for clinical monitoring.

- REBUILT FOR COMFORT — AirPods 4 have been redesigned for exceptional all-day comfort and greater stability. With a refined contour, shorter stem, and quick-press controls for music or calls.
- ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation help reduce outside noise before it reaches your ears, so you can immerse yourself in what you’re listening to.*
- HEAR THE WORLD AROUND YOU — The powerful H2 chip comes to AirPods 4. Adaptive Audio seamlessly blends ANC and Transparency mode — which lets you comfortably hear and interact with the world around you exactly as it sounds — to provide the best listening experience in any environment.* And when you’re speaking with someone nearby, Conversation Awareness automatically lowers the volume of what’s playing.*
- IMPROVED SOUND AND CALL QUALITY — Voice Isolation improves the quality of calls in loud conditions. Using advanced computational audio, it reduces background noise while isolating and clarifying the sound of your voice for whomever you’re speaking to.*
- MAGICAL EXPERIENCE — Just say “Siri” or “Hey Siri” to play a song, make a call, or check your schedule.* And with Siri Interactions, now you can respond to Siri by simply nodding your head yes or shaking your head no.* Pair AirPods 4 by simply placing them near your device and tapping Connect on your screen.* Easily share a song or show between two sets of AirPods.* An optical in-ear sensor knows to play audio only when you’re wearing AirPods and pauses when you take them off. And you can track down your AirPods and Charging Case with the Find My app.*
What did not change as much as expected?
The H2 foundation remains
Both generations use Apple’s H2 headphone chip and Bluetooth 5.3. Core Apple integration, Spatial Audio, Adaptive EQ and the general control experience are therefore evolutionary rather than a complete platform reset. Pro 3’s sound may differ because of its driver, amplifier, venting and fit, but a dramatically better soundstage is not a safe assumption. Seal, tip size, source, EQ and personal preference dominate comparisons.
Charging is mostly the same
Both generations support USB-C, MagSafe, Apple Watch and Qi charging when paired with the relevant case. Pro 3’s USB-C cable is sold separately, so include that cost if you do not already own one. Its case adds second-generation Ultra Wideband hardware for improved Precision Finding, although compatible iPhone and regional requirements still apply.
Features Pro 2 owners also receive
Do not buy Pro 3 solely for software features that Apple supports on Pro 2 with current firmware and compatible devices. Depending on model, software, region, age and language, Pro 2 also supports:
- Hearing Test
- Hearing Aid
- Hearing Protection
- Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness
- Voice Isolation
- Live Translation
- Camera-remote controls on compatible devices
Apple documents the hearing functions at this support page and broader compatibility at its AirPods requirements page. Hearing Aid is intended for adults with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss and has FDA authorization for its intended use, but availability varies by country and it does not replace an audiologist or other professional care.

Live Translation is not a Pro 3 exclusive
Live Translation requires AirPods Pro 2 or later, current firmware, an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone, iOS 26 or later, and supported languages and regions. Apple’s user guide specifies an iPhone 15 Pro or later for the relevant workflow. Apple currently labels the capability beta. Requirements and availability are listed in Apple’s support documentation, the AirPods User Guide and the Pro 3 specifications.
Compatibility and model details
Both generations can work as Bluetooth headphones with Android and other non-Apple devices, but Apple-specific controls and services are limited. Full functionality depends on iPhone model, iOS version, AirPods firmware, Apple Intelligence support, app compatibility, language and region. Pro 3 heart-rate tracking requires iOS 26 or later.
“AirPods Pro 2” is not one identical product. The original Lightning-case model differs from the later USB-C case, including charging and some dust-resistance and Vision Pro-related capabilities. Confirm which version you are buying before comparing specifications at Apple’s Pro 2 page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should buy, upgrade or keep each model?
Buy Pro 3
- You are buying new and the price gap is small.
- You fly or commute frequently and want the strongest available Apple in-ear ANC.
- You need longer uninterrupted listening.
- Pro 2 tips never fitted comfortably and the XXS option may help.
- You exercise with an iPhone and want earbud-based heart-rate tracking.
- You need the higher IP57 protection.
- Your existing Pro 2 batteries or case are failing.
Buy discounted Pro 2
- The USB-C model is substantially cheaper.
- You want strong ANC and the H2 platform without new hardware features.
- You do not need heart-rate sensing, IP57 protection or the extra tip size.
- You are comfortable accepting older inventory and potentially more battery wear.
Keep Pro 2
- The fit is stable and comfortable.
- ANC already meets your needs.
- You own an Apple Watch for workouts.
- You want Live Translation or hearing features that your current hardware and software already support.
- You value the Pro 2 case’s higher rated total ANC battery figure.
Use the real price gap, not the list price
Apple’s $249 U.S. price makes Pro 3 the default new purchase, but Pro 2 discounts change the calculation. These are practical decision rules, not manufacturer claims:

| Price difference | Practical decision |
|---|---|
| Under about $30 | Choose Pro 3. |
| About $50–$80 | Choose Pro 3 if ANC, fit, battery, durability or workout tracking matters; choose Pro 2 for ordinary listening. |
| More than that | Discounted Pro 2 is the value choice unless you specifically need Pro 3 hardware. |
Existing owners should subtract realistic resale or trade-in value from the upgrade cost. A healthy Pro 2 with excellent fit can be a better financial decision than replacing it at full price.
Alternatives within Apple’s range
AirPods 4 with ANC
Apple lists AirPods 4 with ANC at $179 on its comparison page. Their open-style fit avoids silicone tips and costs less, but they provide less sealed isolation and do not offer Pro 3’s heart-rate sensor or Pro-level fit and hearing feature package. See Apple’s AirPods 4 page.
AirPods Max 2
Apple lists AirPods Max 2 at $549. The over-ear design can suit home, office and travel listening, but its size, heat, price and poor exercise portability make it a different category. Details are at Apple’s AirPods Max page.
Android-first buyers should also compare platform-neutral earbuds before choosing either AirPods model; both work over Bluetooth, but much of Apple’s advantage depends on Apple hardware and software.
Verdict
Buy AirPods Pro 3 when purchasing new at a similar price, or when you specifically need stronger ANC, a potentially better fit, longer single-charge life, IP57 protection or workout heart-rate sensing. Buy discounted AirPods Pro 2 when the discount is meaningful and those hardware changes do not solve a problem you have. Keep your Pro 2 when fit, ANC, battery and durability are already good; Live Translation and hearing features alone are not sufficient reasons to upgrade.
