Short answer: Snap’s 2024 fifth-generation Spectacles are still primarily developer hardware, not a normal retail product. Snap has now announced a separate consumer-oriented device, SPECS, but as of August 18, 2026 it was available only for preorder, with a $2,195 announced price, a refundable $200 deposit and expected fall 2026 shipping to the United States, United Kingdom and France. GPS, guided navigation and the AR Keyboard are platform capabilities; their presence in developer documentation does not mean every consumer feature is already shipping on SPECS.
Three different Spectacles eras
Snap’s earlier Spectacles were camera glasses built around recording and sharing Snapchat video. The fifth-generation Spectacles released in 2024 were a different product: see-through, standalone augmented-reality glasses distributed through Snap’s developer program. Snap described that hardware as preparation for a broader public product rather than as ordinary consumer retail eyewear (Snap’s 2025 transition announcement).
That public product is SPECS, announced June 16, 2026. SPECS and the 2024 Spectacles are related generations, but they are not interchangeable names for the same device. The older model remains tied to developer access, while SPECS is being positioned as a consumer-facing standalone AR computer.
| Generation | Role | Availability status |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier Spectacles | Camera-focused Snapchat glasses | Prior consumer product family |
| Fifth-generation Spectacles (2024) | See-through AR platform for developers, creators and selected partners | Program-based access; not normal retail purchasing |
| SPECS (2026) | Standalone consumer-oriented AR glasses | Preorder announced; expected to ship in fall 2026 |
What GPS does on Spectacles
Snap’s location API gives a Lens access to precise GPS information after the wearer grants permission. It is intended to let developers attach digital content to places, not to turn the glasses automatically into a universal replacement for a phone navigation app (Snap location API documentation).

Examples of location-aware experiences
- AR tours of landmarks, museums and event spaces
- Content that appears when a wearer reaches a particular place
- Navigation-style arrows or prompts built into a Lens
- Location-specific information and interactive overlays
Snap’s Guided Navigation tools are for developers building those tours and routes (Snap’s SPECS announcement). GPS coordinates alone do not guarantee turn-by-turn road routing, accurate indoor positioning, continuous connectivity, map-database access or reliable performance between tall buildings. A Lens may also need a network connection, backend services or another positioning method to deliver a useful experience.
Permission is part of the experience
Location is a sensitive capability. Snap’s permission documentation says a Lens can request GPS access and the wearer controls whether it is granted (permissions overview; transparent permission behavior). Denying access can limit or disable a location-based Lens.
What the AR Keyboard actually provides
The AR Keyboard is an input tool that a developer enables inside a Lens session. Snap documents alphanumeric and special-character entry, URL input, numeric-pad layouts and phone-number layouts. Developers can choose the keyboard type and turn the feature on or off (AR Keyboard documentation).

- Clear lenses: Clear reading lenses for close-up tasks such as books recipes and labels. Selected strength: +1.75 diopter reading power.
- Keep your glasses close: The integrated flexible rubberized band lets the glasses hang around your neck between uses so they remain within reach when you need them.
- Adjust the fit: Sliding metal temples let you fine-tune the length. The rectangular full-rim frame is designed for adult men and women and everyday reading routines.
- Your selected pair: Matte Black frame with +1.75 diopter reading power. Frame width 130 mm; lens width 52 mm; lens height 32 mm; bridge width 21 mm. One pair included. Compare the measurements with your preferred fit.
Developer requirements
- Lens Studio 5.7.0 or later
- Spectacles OS 5.060 or later
- A Lens designed to invoke the keyboard
For longer messages, the Spectacles mobile app can provide a phone keyboard instead. That fallback may be more practical than selecting virtual keys in mid-air. The documented versions apply to the developer platform; they should not be assumed to describe the final SPECS consumer software until Snap publishes and ships it.

What SPECS promises beyond the developer kit
Snap says SPECS are standalone glasses with see-through displays, voice and gesture interaction, AI assistance, directions, spatial measurements, contextual information, work tools, entertainment and shared immersive experiences. Developers are expected to continue creating Lenses for the platform.
| Specification or capability | Snap’s announced detail | Qualification |

Can ordinary buyers get them now?
Not as a generally shipping retail product. As of August 18, 2026, SPECS preorders were open for $2,195 with a refundable $200 deposit, and Snap expected deliveries in fall 2026. The company had not yet completed its deeper public launch presentation, scheduled for September 16, 2026 at 4 p.m. PT (launch-event notice).
- 2024 Spectacles: access is structured around Snap’s developer program and supported countries, including the United States plus Austria, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain (country expansion announcement).
- SPECS: preorder access announced, with shipping planned rather than completed.
- Outside the initial markets: Snap has not announced equivalent launch access in the cited materials.
“Exclusive to developers” is therefore most accurate for the 2024 model when it means “not a normal consumer-retail product.” It should not be read as saying no non-engineer could ever participate; Snap’s program has included creators, partners and selected enthusiasts.
What developers should know
Developers can build with Lens Studio and use Snap’s Spectacles APIs for location, permissions, interaction, AI and spatial experiences. Snap’s official build site also promotes Commerce Kit and cloud-backed capabilities for commercial applications (Spectacles build resources).

Compatibility is an objective, not a guarantee
Snap says Lenses built for Spectacles are intended to transition to SPECS, and it has announced migration support. That does not guarantee identical behavior: an API may require modification, an older device may lack newer functionality, and some Snapchat APIs remain in the process of being ported and tested. Developers should check the live compatibility list before committing a production project.
- Verify the target Spectacles OS and Lens Studio versions.
- Test GPS permission denial, weak indoor reception and offline states.
- Confirm whether a Lens depends on cloud, AI or continuous internet services.
- Test keyboard layouts and phone-keyboard fallback rather than assuming universal text entry.
- Do not assume a developer-program membership automatically provides SPECS hardware.
Examples such as Super Travel, Drum Kit, Pool Assist, Cookmate and Wisp World illustrate what developers can create; they are Lenses or ecosystem experiences, not guaranteed built-in applications on every pair.

Battery, weight and typing
Four hours is Snap’s mixed-use estimate, not an all-day eyewear promise. At roughly 132–136 grams, SPECS are also much heavier than conventional glasses. The AR Keyboard is useful for short structured input, URLs or numbers, but a phone remains the likely choice for substantial typing.

- Secure front snap closure: The updated SP04 magnetic bridge includes small interlocking tabs and matching notches that help align the connection and resist twisting. Pull the frame apart at the center to open, then bring the two halves together to wear. This front-connecting design makes it convenient to put your readers on and take them off as you move between close-up tasks throughout the day.
- Everyday reading convenience: Clear lenses are suited to close-up activities such as reading books, checking menus, following recipes and reviewing paperwork. This selected pair has +2.50 diopters of reading power. Choose the lens strength that suits your reading needs. The front-opening SP04 frame makes it easy to switch between wearing your glasses and keeping them nearby as your daily tasks change.
- Keep your readers within reach: The continuous rear band allows the glasses to rest around your neck when you are not wearing them. Bring them back into position and reconnect the bridge when you need to read again. The integrated design keeps the frame and band together, so you can move between reading, desk work and household tasks without finding a separate place to set your glasses down.
- Adjustable fit and soft band: Sliding metal temples let you fine-tune the length, with an adjustable band range of 464-500 mm. The flexible rubberized band has a soft-touch feel and a foldable design for everyday handling. The oval plastic full-rim frame is designed for adult men and women. Compare the dimensions with your current readers to choose a fit that works for you.
- Your selected pair: Matte Black frame with +2.50 diopter reading power. Frame width 131 mm, lens width 50 mm, lens height 42 mm and bridge width 20 mm. Adjustable band length 464-500 mm. Item weight 1.28 ounces. Includes one pair of Calabria SP04 glasses. Check your color, lens version and strength before ordering.
Privacy and connectivity
Cameras, microphones, GPS and AI services create separate privacy questions. Permission prompts provide user control, but they do not establish that every AI operation is processed on-device. Location features can depend on network access, map data and developer servers. Review each Lens’s permissions and data practices rather than treating the glasses as a single privacy setting.
Third-party software dependence
The most compelling demonstrations depend on developer-made Lenses. Their availability, maintenance and compatibility may change, so an announced capability is not the same as a mature catalog of consumer applications.
Verdict: developer platform today, consumer transition underway
For consumers, the 2024 Spectacles are still a developer-oriented platform. SPECS changes the trajectory, but not the immediate buying reality: as of August 18, 2026 they were an expensive preorder with fall shipping planned, limited initial geography and several unanswered questions about final software and independent performance.
For developers, GPS, Guided Navigation and the AR Keyboard are real, documented building blocks. Snap’s move toward SPECS makes the platform more than an isolated developer experiment, yet API portability, cloud dependencies and long-term hardware support still require testing. Wait for shipped hardware and independent reviews unless you specifically want early access to high-cost see-through AR.
