The Seiko Prospex SPB313J1, SPB315J1 and SPB317J1 are three heritage-inspired 200 m automatic divers built around the same 41 mm cushion-shaped case and 6R35 movement. Your practical choice is mainly about dial treatment and whether you want a steel bracelet or the supplied silicone strap: SPB313J1 is white on steel, SPB315J1 is dark with gilt-coloured details on steel, and SPB317J1 is matte black with silver-coloured details on silicone.
What the three watches have in common
All three references use Seiko’s automatic 6R35 calibre with manual winding, 24 jewels, a date display, stop-seconds (hacking) and an approximately 70-hour power reserve. Seiko states precision of +25/-15 seconds per day for the calibre on its SPB317J1 specification page; that is a movement specification, not a guarantee of any individual watch’s daily result.
The stainless-steel case measures 41.0 mm across. Seiko lists 12.3 mm thickness and 46.9 mm lug-to-lug for SPB317J1; the official 2022 Prospex brochure gives the same 41.0 mm diameter for all three. Monochrome reports the shared dimensions as 41 x 12.3 mm and approximately 47 mm lug-to-lug.

How the designs differ on the wrist
SPB313J1: highest contrast
The white dial gives SPB313J1 the clearest visual contrast in the group, while the black bezel insert and dark hands keep it legible rather than dressy. The steel bracelet makes it the most immediately conventional everyday configuration of the three.

SPB315J1: warm, vintage-leaning details
SPB315J1 uses a dark dial but adds gilt-coloured hands, markers and bezel scale. Those warm accents make it the most deliberately retro-looking option without changing the underlying case, movement or water-resistance specification.
SPB317J1: the tool-watch configuration
SPB317J1 pairs a grained matte-black dial and silver-coloured details with a black silicone strap. It is the only reference supplied without the steel bracelet, and its 20 mm lug spacing gives owners a clearly defined starting point for replacement straps. Confirm end-link, spring-bar and case-clearance compatibility before assuming a bracelet or strap will fit.
Case shape, proportions and comfort
The cushion/C-shaped case is compact relative to Seiko’s larger Prospex divers. A Fratello reviewer wearing a 17 cm wrist reported that the approximately 47 mm lug-to-lug and reduced 12.3 mm thickness wore comfortably, and preferred the SPB317J1’s fit to the SPB143 and SPB151. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a universal wrist-fit result: wrist shape, strap tension and tolerance for thickness all matter.

Monochrome describes the steel-bracelet versions as using a five-link bracelet with a folding clasp, push-buttons and a diving extension. It also reports a 120-click bezel with an aluminium insert, a date positioned at 4:30 and luminous treatment across the dial markers. Those are editorial observations rather than a substitute for Seiko’s formal specification sheet.

Monochrome and Fratello identify Seiko’s 1968 6105-8000 as a design influence. Seiko’s UK boutique describes SPB317J1 as a modern interpretation of the original 1968 Turtle. The safer reading for the whole trio is “heritage-inspired”: the cushion case and visual language reference that era, while the dimensions, sapphire crystal and modern 6R35 platform make these contemporary Prospex watches rather than exact reproductions.
Which one should you choose?
Choose SPB313J1 if contrast is your priority
Its white dial is the standout choice when you want the most visible departure from the usual black diver while retaining a steel-bracelet setup.

Choose SPB315J1 for the most vintage-styled palette
The gilt-coloured details provide the strongest period-inspired character among the three, with the convenience of the shared steel bracelet.
Choose SPB317J1 for the darkest, most tool-oriented look
Its matte-black dial, silver accents and silicone strap form the most utilitarian package. It is also the reference for which Seiko publishes the fullest current dimensional and movement specification on the model page.

When checked, Seiko’s UK boutique displayed SPB317J1 at £860 and marked it out of stock. That is a UK retail snapshot, not a worldwide price or a promise of present inventory. Check the Seiko site and authorised retailers in your market for current price, stock and warranty terms before buying.
What is documented—and what is not
- The shared movement, case diameter, 200 m rating, sapphire crystal, inner anti-reflective coating, screw-down crown, screw case back and unidirectional bezel are documented by Seiko.
- Exact wrist comfort is personal; the 17 cm fit report is a single reviewer’s account.
- Bracelet construction, 120-click action, aluminium insert, 4:30 date placement and luminous-marker coverage come from Monochrome’s editorial observations.
- No reliable published market-share or ownership statistic establishes how popular one reference is relative to the others.
Verdict
These are mechanically and dimensionally close siblings, so there is no specification-based winner. SPB313J1, SPB315J1 and SPB317J1 all deliver the same 6R35 platform, approximately 70-hour reserve and 200 m diver construction. Select the dial-and-bezel treatment that suits your wardrobe, then decide whether the supplied steel bracelet or silicone strap better matches how you will wear the watch.
