Oura CEO Tom Hale’s skepticism is a strategic opinion, not evidence that Apple has ruled out a smart ring. Apple has not publicly announced an Apple Ring; the idea remains a rumor. The business case is genuinely awkward: a ring could add comfortable overnight health tracking, but it would overlap with Apple Watch while offering far less screen-based interaction. That tension helps explain why Oura can compete today—and why Apple’s eventual entry would still matter.
What did Tom Hale say about an Apple Ring?
TechRadar reported that Hale did not expect Apple to compete with Oura “anytime soon.” That is the clearest published characterization of his position in the available coverage, rather than proof of a specific Apple decision. TechRadar’s coverage of Apple Ring rumors treats the product as unconfirmed.

Hale has discussed Oura alongside larger technology companies, including Apple and Google, in interviews. That context makes his view relevant as an industry executive’s assessment, but there is no basis to treat him as speaking from inside Apple’s product planning. His comments can reflect strategic judgment as well as the normal competitive interest of an Oura CEO in reassuring customers and partners that Oura has room to grow. Yahoo Finance’s interview with Hale frames the competition; it does not establish Apple’s roadmap.
Has Apple announced a smart ring?
No. Apple has not publicly announced a ring, release date, price, official product name, or specifications. Recurring rumors are not confirmation, and Hale’s skepticism is not confirmation in the opposite direction. The sound conclusion is narrower: an Apple Ring is possible, but unannounced.

That distinction matters because patents, analyst predictions, supply-chain reports, and a company announcement carry different evidentiary weight. The cited coverage discusses a possible Apple Ring as a rumor, not a product Apple has committed to shipping. See the current rumor framing from TechRadar.
Why might a ring be an awkward product for Apple?
Apple Watch already does much of the health-tracking job
Apple Watch collects health and activity data, connects to Apple Health, supports workouts, and serves as an iPhone companion. A ring could add discreet, comfortable passive tracking—especially overnight—but much of its health proposition would overlap with a device Apple already sells. Apple would need a clear answer to a commercial question: would the ring bring new customers into its ecosystem, increase Watch sales, or create enough additional health value to justify another product line?
If a ring displaced Watch upgrades or persuaded people that they no longer needed a Watch, it could cannibalize an established category. If it were sold as a Watch companion, Apple might sell both to some people, but the ring would be a narrower accessory rather than a self-sufficient wearable.

A ring is good at sensing and poor at interaction
A ring’s small form constrains battery capacity, sensors, radios, charging hardware, and thermal management. It has no display, and its controls and haptics are limited compared with a watch. That makes it well suited to passive measurements and less suited to notifications, app use, workout control, navigation, or emergency communication.

Apple would also have practical product decisions to solve: sizing and fit can complicate online sales and returns; a tiny battery has to balance comfort and frequent charging; and health features create expectations that data will be reliable and explained responsibly. Medical or diagnostic claims can bring regulatory obligations. None of these makes a ring impossible to build, but together they demand a focused use case that is easy for ordinary buyers to understand.
Why could Apple still make one?
The strongest case is not a miniature Apple Watch. It is a screenless sensor that gathers data when a user removes a Watch, particularly during sleep. Apple could target people who dislike wearing a watch overnight, or people who do not want a screen on their wrist at all. The ring might complement a Watch worn during the day, while providing more continuous passive health inputs to Apple Health.

A discreet fashion accessory, new health-data source, or eventually a platform for gesture or authentication features could also be attractive. Apple has the engineering and distribution capacity to enter the category; the unresolved issue is whether the product would add enough value to its ecosystem to justify the complexity. The existence of smart-ring rivals—and the category’s reported growth—may make the opportunity more interesting, but does not make a launch inevitable. Fortune reported Hale’s claim that ring wearables had grown by more than 100%; that figure is his company/category claim, not an independently established market-wide statistic. Fortune’s September 2025 interview coverage attributes the growth comment to Hale.
Why Oura believes it can compete
Oura’s argument is specialization. Its ring and app are built around sleep, recovery, readiness, temperature trends, stress, and long-term behavioral interpretation. The product is screenless by design, not a smaller general-purpose computer. That focus can make Oura useful alongside an Apple Watch rather than as a direct replacement: one device handles interaction and workouts, while the other prioritizes unobtrusive tracking.
Hale has presented Oura as a health-focused company rather than simply a consumer-electronics maker. Interviews have discussed its longer-term direction, including health insights, AI, partnerships, and international growth. That positioning and Oura’s accumulated experience interpreting ring-generated data are real advantages, though they do not mean Apple could not reproduce competing features. Oura is not insulated from a large technology company. Apple could bring a huge installed base, Apple Health integration, retail reach, marketing scale, and tightly integrated hardware and software. Oura’s brand recognition, specialist app, partnerships, and user trust create a head start, not a permanent moat. Hale has been Oura’s CEO since 2022, according to coverage of his tenure, but his experience does not establish privileged knowledge of Apple’s plans. Masters of Scale’s interview with Hale.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Oura’s membership is part of the competitive question
Oura’s ongoing membership is a central difference to weigh, not a small footnote. Coverage describes the membership at about $6 per month or $70 per year, alongside hardware whose price varies by model and finish. Fortune cited the Oura Ring 4 at $349 in September 2025; Android Central reported a hardware range of roughly $349–$499. These are reported figures, not guaranteed current prices: check the seller for the configuration and market you would buy. A future Apple product might include core features in Apple Health, or Apple might charge for premium insights; neither approach is established. Likewise, a subscription-free alternative is not automatically cheaper over its useful life or equivalent in app quality and interpretation. Compare total cost, which features remain available without payment, and the experience you actually value.

What should wearable buyers do now?
- Choose a ring for sleep and recovery: Oura is a fit for people who want a mature, screenless experience and value its interpretation enough to accept the hardware and membership costs. Check current compatibility, sizing, return terms, warranty, and battery expectations before buying.
- Choose Apple Watch for interaction: It is the more natural option if notifications, apps, workouts, emergency capabilities, and real-time controls matter more than a screenless overnight device. If you already own one, try its existing sleep features and Apple Health before adding another wearable.
- Consider a ring and watch together: This can make sense if you prefer a ring overnight and a watch for daytime interaction, rather than expecting either one to replace the other.
- Compare alternatives by ecosystem and cost: Samsung Galaxy Ring is most relevant to Galaxy users; check current phone compatibility and features at Samsung’s Galaxy Ring page. RingConn and Ultrahuman are options for buyers investigating alternatives to Oura’s membership, but compare app features, sizing, returns, warranty, battery claims, and phone support rather than assuming equal performance. See RingConn and Ultrahuman Ring.
Consumer rings report estimates and interpretations of signals such as temperature, sleep, heart rate, and readiness; they are not diagnoses. Do not use a wearable score as a substitute for medical advice, particularly for fertility or other health decisions with clinical consequences.
Why Hale’s skepticism is plausible—but not decisive
Apple could make a smart ring, but it would need to distinguish the device from Apple Watch, decide whether it is a companion or a competing wearable, and give buyers a compelling reason to adopt a product with fewer interaction options. Oura has a specialist position and a head start in ring-focused software; Apple would bring formidable ecosystem and distribution advantages if it entered. Hale’s view is therefore a plausible read of Apple’s incentives, not a forecast readers should treat as fact.
