Researchers tested 22 bands: 15 contained more than 1% total fluorine, and PFHxA measurements ranged from below the detection limit to 16,662 nanograms per gram (ng/g). The result is a reason to check a band’s material and consider a non-fluoroelastomer replacement—not proof that every Apple, Google, Samsung or Fitbit band is dangerous, or that wearing one causes illness.
What the study actually found
The study, “Presence of Perfluorohexanoic Acid in Fluoroelastomer Watch Bands,” was published online on December 18, 2024, in Environmental Science & Technology Letters and in the January 14, 2025 issue. The researchers, associated with the University of Notre Dame, analyzed 22 bands bought in the United States or obtained by donation. The full paper is available from the American Chemical Society.
They first screened band surfaces for total fluorine using particle-induced gamma-ray emission spectroscopy. They then extracted chemicals with solvents and used liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry to look for 20 PFAS compounds. Fifteen of the 22 bands exceeded 1% total fluorine. PFHxA was the most frequently detected targeted PFAS, with results from below the detection limit to 16,662 ng/g. Six bands also underwent a test for PFAS precursors.
“High” in this context is a comparison with concentrations reported in other consumer products, not a legally defined safety limit for watch bands. The study’s authors and the ACS summary note that some samples exceeded 1,000 parts per billion, but the experiment did not establish a harmful dose for a person wearing a band.

Which brands and materials are implicated?
Contemporary reporting on the study identified tested bands associated with Apple, Apple/Nike, CASETiFY, Fitbit, Google, KingofKings, Modal, Samsung, Tighesen and Vanjua. That is a list of brands represented in a small sample, not a brand-wide contamination finding. The public paper does not provide a complete product-by-product result that would justify labeling every model from any company as contaminated.
Separately, product descriptions identify some models as fluoroelastomer or fluororubber. Examples discussed in coverage include the Apple Sport Band, Apple/Nike Sport Band, Samsung Galaxy Watch Rugged Sport Band, Samsung Galaxy Watch Sport T-Buckle Band and Google Pixel Watch Active Band. A material description can identify a band as belonging to the category studied; it is not itself a chemical test result.
Some Samsung products cited in coverage use HNBR (hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber), including Galaxy Watch Ultra Marine, Galaxy Watch Ultra Peakform and Galaxy Watch7 Sport bands. HNBR is not fluoroelastomer. That distinction does not establish that HNBR, silicone, nylon, leather or any other alternative is universally risk-free.

What “fluoroelastomer” means
Fluoroelastomers are synthetic rubbers engineered to resist skin oils, sweat, lotions, heat and chemicals. Those durability properties make them useful for sports and premium watch bands. Labels may also say fluororubber, FKM or Viton. “Rubber” or “sport” alone is not enough information, and color or appearance cannot identify the material.

What is PFHxA?
PFHxA is one specific perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS), a broad family often called “forever chemicals” because many members persist in the environment. PFHxA should not be treated as a synonym for all PFAS: compounds in the family differ in chemistry, persistence, toxicity evidence and regulatory treatment.
The study’s concern was that PFHxA was extractable from some band surfaces at comparatively high concentrations. It did not show that the compound migrates from a band into human tissue at a harmful dose.

Does wearing a band expose you?
A band sits against skin for long periods and may be worn during exercise, so exposure is biologically plausible. But the study measured only chemicals in the material and what could be extracted under laboratory conditions. It did not conduct a human wear trial, a direct sweat-transfer test or a skin-absorption measurement.
- Detected in the band: demonstrated for PFHxA in some samples.
- Extractable in laboratory testing: demonstrated by the study’s solvent method.
- Transferred to skin during ordinary wear: not measured.
- Absorbed into the body: not measured.
- Exposure high enough to cause harm: not established.
The authors explicitly called for more comprehensive exposure studies. The evidence therefore supports a potential-exposure concern, not a diagnosis or a proven health effect.

Are Apple, Google, Samsung or Fitbit bands “toxic”?
Some bands from brands named in the sample were associated with fluoroelastomer materials, and PFHxA was found in tested fluoroelastomer bands. That does not mean every band made by those companies contains PFHxA or is unsafe. Models, generations, sizes and materials can differ, and third-party listings may copy or misuse manufacturer terminology.

Claims that these bands cause cancer, infertility, immune disease or other illnesses go beyond this study. The study also did not show that sweating forces PFHxA through pores, nor that a rash proves PFAS exposure.
Should you throw away your watch?
No immediate disposal recommendation follows from the evidence. If you prefer a precautionary approach, replacing a fluoroelastomer band is reasonable—particularly if you wear it day and night, exercise heavily in it, apply lotion or sunscreen underneath, or have recurring irritation. The ACS summary records the researchers’ advice to avoid bands listed as fluoroelastomer; that is precautionary guidance, not a medical necessity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check your current band
- Find the exact model name, generation and part number.
- Read the manufacturer’s product page, packaging or technical specification.
- Search for “fluoroelastomer,” “fluororubber,” “FKM” or “Viton.”
- If the material is not disclosed, do not assume the band is PFAS-free.
- If minimizing potential exposure is your priority, select a band explicitly described as a different material and verify device and size compatibility.
“Silicone” and “fluoroelastomer” are not interchangeable terms. Ordinary silicone is a different material category and is the type of alternative suggested by the researchers’ advice, but silicone labeling alone is not a universal safety certification.

Choosing an alternative band
| Material | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Fluoroelastomer / FKM | Resists sweat, oils, chemicals and wear | Material category implicated in the PFHxA study; may be listed under several names |
| Silicone | Soft, inexpensive and easy to clean | Can trap sweat or attract dust; quality and labeling vary |
| Nylon or woven fabric | Lightweight and breathable | Absorbs sweat and odors and dries slowly; generally unsuitable for swimming |
| Leather | Comfortable and formal-looking | Poor choice for swimming or intense workouts; finishes, dyes and adhesives vary |
| HNBR or another non-fluoro rubber | Can offer durability and water resistance | The study did not comprehensively establish the safety of all alternative rubbers |
| Metal | Durable and easy to wipe clean | Heavier; nickel or plating sensitivity is possible |
Official bands from Apple, Google, Samsung and Fitbit offer the clearest fit and compatibility information. Third-party vendors such as Nomad, Spigen and CASETiFY require individual material checks. Prices vary by model, size, material, region and promotion and were not independently verified here.
What if your band causes a rash?
Rashes can result from friction, trapped sweat, soaps, adhesives, allergies or irritation; this study was not a dermatology investigation. Remove the watch, wash and dry the skin and band, and loosen the fit. Seek medical advice for persistent, severe or spreading symptoms. A rash neither proves nor disproves PFAS exposure.
Important limitations
- Only 22 bands were tested, so the sample cannot represent every brand or model.
- The public reporting does not provide a complete model-by-model contamination table.
- The work measured extractable chemicals, not transfer during normal wear or human absorption.
- No illness, unsafe dose or causal relationship with a disease was demonstrated.
- A “PFAS-free” marketing claim may cover only intentionally added PFAS or a limited test panel.
What to do today
Check the exact material of your band. If it says fluoroelastomer, fluororubber, FKM or Viton and you want to minimize potential PFAS exposure, switch to a clearly labeled silicone, nylon, fabric, leather or other non-fluoroelastomer option that suits your activities. Keep the band and skin clean and dry. There is no evidence in this study that requires panic or immediate disposal of the watch itself.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does PFHxA mean the same thing as PFAS?
No. PFHxA is one specific compound within the much broader PFAS family, whose members can differ in persistence, toxicity evidence and regulation.

Check the band’s own water-resistance and care instructions. Nylon and leather often retain water or degrade, while suitability varies among silicone and other materials.
